Louis Armstrong album
$11.55 Nashville session veteran Beegie Adair turns in a pleasant, tasteful set of jazz-trio arrangements of holiday standards here, accompanied by bassist Roger Spencer and drummer Chris Brown. The trio plays the melodies straight, then Adair takes off on appropriate variations. There's nothing earth-shaking here, but the playing is effective, and the result is a worthy addition to the Christmas music catalog. ~ William Ruhlmann
Recorded at Wildwood Recording, Brentwood, Tennessee.
Beegie Adair Trio: Beegie Adair (piano); Roger Spencer (bass); Chris Brown (drums).
| | Jan Garbarek Dresden: In Concert CDs (2009)
Louis Armstrong CD music
$23.29 It's hard to believe that after recording as a leader for 40 years, DRESDEN: IN CONCERT is Jan Garbarek's first-ever live album. For those who think that Garbarek abandoned jazz some time ago, this will be a shock. DRESDEN is an engaged, kinetic, double-disc, two-hour performance of his quartet playing in the modern jazz idiom and using all of its tenets--from complex harmonics and rhythmic invention to extended lyric improvisation--to create a tour de force that honors all the music he holds dear. Garbarek plays tenor, soprano, and selje flute here, and is accompanied by his regular group that includes drummer Manu Katche, pianist/keyboadist Rainer Brüninghaus, and electric bassist Yuri Daniel. There are 16 compositions that include tracks from previous albums -- some of them radically but exquisitely revamped for this quartet and performance. There are also tunes by his bandmates, and an extended, stellar reading of Milton Nascimento's gorgeous "Milagro Dos Piexes," that features some of the most inventive and dynamic dialogue between Garbarek and Brüninghaus on record.
Personnel: Jan Garbarek (soprano saxophone, tenor saxophone).
Audio Mixers: Jan Erik Kongshaug; Jan Garbarek; Manfred Eicher.

| | Diana Krall When I Look In Your Eyes (1998)
Louis Armstrong CD music
$14.75 WHEN I LOOK IN YOUR EYES won the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Performance and for Best Engineered Album, Non Classical. WHEN I LOOK IN YOUR EYES was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Album Of The Year.
This is a Super Audio CD playable only on Super Audio CD players.
WHEN I LOOK IN YOUR EYES, a 1999 Verve release, heralds the return of the cool and groovy Latin-tinged jazz of the '60s. Upon hearing the opening track, a bossa-nova-fied version of Irving Berlin's "Let's Face The Music And Dance," one might think he had accidentally put on a Getz/Gilberto record. In fact, it's hard to avoid comparing Krall's breathy alto to that of Astrud Gilberto-particularly on the more samba-flavored numbers.
But Krall ultimately resists comparisons. Her simultaneously textured and smooth tone, warm timbre, and conversational phrasing mark her as unique. The set of standards here, including "Let's Fall In Love," "I've Got You Under My Skin," and "Pick Yourself Up" among others, is enhanced by fine session musicians and Johnny Mandel's tasteful arrangements. While Krall is more than comfortable with a sly swing (Michael Franks' "Popsicle Toes"), it is the stirring ballads-like the title track-that show her skill to best advantage. Krall is a considerable talent, and the time-tested, well-loved sound that characterizes these tracks should ensure her success.
Recorded at Avatar Studios, New York, New York.

| | Allen Hermann Jazz Trombone CD (2004)
Louis Armstrong music CDs
$13.39 Trombonists Carl Fontana and Allen Hermann join forces for a brilliant two-horn session in 2001, which turned out to be one of Fontana's last dates prior to his death in 2003. Although they had played together on a number of occasions, this is evidently the first time both men appeared on the same release. Fontana was an established veteran of many decades, while Hermann had concentrated on his career as a physicist before picking up the pace a bit as a player in the years leading up to this recording. Accompanied by a rhythm section including pianist Stefan Karlsson (who has made many fine CDs as a leader himself), bassist Bob Badgely (who spent six years with singer Joe Williams and also served as the house bassist in the long running jazz radio series Four Queens Jazz Night from Las Vegas), guitarist Curt Warren, and drummer Santo Savino, Hermann and Fontana complement one another's playing throughout the CD, which focuses primarily on standards. The brisk bossa nova setting of "It Might as Well Be Spring" removes any trace of melancholy from the song. The two horns salute the trombone duo J.J. Johnson and Kai Winding with their interwoven loping finale to "I'm Old Fashioned." Karlsson especially shines in the toe-tapping "Limehouse Blues" (a favorite standard that isn't a blues at all). Unfortunately, Fontana's horn sounds rather muddy in "Emily" due to overmodulation, while Badgely's bass seems to be buzzing at times elsewhere on the CD. But the overall feeling of this meeting is one of pure delight, as the sun sets on the career of one gifted musician and belatedly rises on that of another. ~ Ken Dryden
Personnel: Allen Hermann (trombone); Curt Warren (guitar); Allen Hermann (trombone); Bob Badgley (double bass); Carl Fontana (trombone); Stefan Karlsson (piano); Santo Savino (drums).

| | Colin Hay Going Somewhere CD (2001)
Louis Armstrong songs
$12.19 Colin Hay was the singer and guitarist for 80's band Men At Work.
Going Somewhere is the sixth solo album from Men at Work's Colin Hay, but one of the few available in the US. First available on MP3.com, then sold through Hay's web site, Going Somewhere is currently distributed by MusicBlitz and is availble on the web. The acoustic album is filled with good songs, including two from previous Hay albums. "Looking for Jack" was the title track from Colin James Hay's debut solo album. "Wafaring Sons" was also a title track, in this case from his commercially unsuccessful 1990 album. The song "Waiting ror My Real Life to Begin" was used by the TV show Judging Amy in 2001. Going Somewhere is actually the followup to Hay's 1992 acoustic album Peaks and Valleys and is intended to sound like his live solo shows. ~ JT Griffith

| | Brion Gysin Live In London 1982 CD (2007) (Import)
Louis Armstrong CD music
$13.59 Live in London 1982 is the Beat Generation revamped. Recorded four years before the death of Beat legend Brion Gysin, this live set features the poet reciting poems from the late '50s and early '60s, accompanied by a makeshift no wave backing band consisting of Slits bassist Tessa Pollitt (also playing cello), Rip Rig & Panic (and later free improv) drummer Steve Noble, Penguin Cafe Orchestra percussionist Gile, and guitarist Ramuntcho Matta, also credited for writing the band's vamps and grooves. The music is resolutely avant rock: dissonant, provocative, and largely improvised. The musicians' interventions are tentative at first ("Minutes to Go, #1," "Cut-Ups (1959)"), then, following an extended unaccompanied recitation, the musical aspect of the show takes off. Paradoxically, that 25-minute solo spot for Gysin, entitled "Teaching," provides a highlight: the man clearly enjoys revisiting his old writings and, at age 66, definitely has the cultural authority of a teacher. The sound quality in the first two-thirds of the album is fine. However, things degenerate starting with "Ad Lib," which seems to be an audience recording from the back of the venue. The sound quality improves for "Impro: 1," but the tapes are badly warped, which makes the track very annoying. The last two tracks sound better and contain, in fact, the best material on the album: the band gels better and Gysin paces his recitation to the groove. Live in London 1982 is an interesting document, but it will appeal only to fans of spoken word or connoisseurs of William S. Burroughs and Brion Gysin's legacy. ~ François Couture
In Autumn 1982, in Brixton, London, Brion Gysin, the eternal accomplice of William Burroughs, renewed the methods of performance by reciting texts, hastily brought together with this performance, accompanied by Slits-member, Tessa, Steve of Rip, Rig and Panic, Gile of Penguin Café Orchestra, and Ramuntcho Matta on guitar. Ramuntcho, in the style of Brion, called this session "White Funk." Most of the texts were written upon meeting Burroughs, at the time of the invention of the cut-up. The influence that Brion Gysin has had on contemporary music may never be taken fully into account, particularly when he introduced Brian Jones of The Rolling Stones to the shepherd's music of Joujouka. Those times were still audacious: the music was created during the sound-checks! Musically, the choice of traditional instruments expresses the desire to be free of machines (because, as Burroughs says, "We ourselves are machines."). This recording is evidence of the extraordinary creativity and spontaneity of the musical and artistic scene at that time, and it refuses to age a bit. Beyond the nostalgia inspired by the invocation of that bygone cultural scene, this is a renewed wake-up call for a kind of creativity that is terribly difficult to find today.
Composer: Ramuntcho Matta.
Lyricist: Brion Gysin.
Personnel: Brion Gysin (vocals); Brion Gysin; Tessa (bass guitar); Jail (percussion); Ramuntcho Matta (guitar, electronics); Steve Noble (drums).

| | L G 'S Want Too Much CD (2009)
Louis Armstrong music CDs
$12.15 Spawned out of excess songwriting talent that flourishes outside of Nashville's music industry, two fiercely independent hombres joined forces to create the definitive postmodern American music group: The LG's. "how did that happen, how did we come together?" -Al "It was in the swamps man, the gutter!" -Sid East Nashville was where the deal went down. Frustrated with working for "the man" (who wouldn't even let some people wash their hands after a long hard day of slaving in toxic chemicals), LG's front men Al and Sid took comfort in guitars and beer to sooth their tortured souls. Their earliest collaborations included "Corner Bar," "You Want Too Much" and "Time." These legendary tunes were recorded in Sid's swinging bachelor pad and private recording studio known as Dog Hell. The extreme positive response that these classic songs generated encouraged the duo to officially drink more beer and record a hit album. The band name originated one night after a few too many and a screening of Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2 ("lookie, made you a fry house!"). The LG's are well seasoned musical geniuses. (Don't believe it? Buy the album!) They each have history steeped in musical phenomena. Let's get down in the bio's. Lord Lord...
