Although many music fans were convinced that Def Leppard would become hard rock's next big band, few could have predicted the massive across-the-boards success that its third record, 1983's PYROMANIA, achieved. Many wondered why it was taking the group so long to release a follow-up to 1981's HIGH 'N' DRY, but the finished product was well worth the wait. Not only did it become one of the year's best-selling albums and made the band instant U.S. arena headliners, but it has remained a consistent seller ever since (by 1994, it had reached nine million units in the U.S. alone).
The songwriting and overall sound was more streamlined and succinct this time around--while there are guitar riffs galore, the songs have more of a pop feel. Founding guitarist Pete Willis left during the recording, replaced by Phil Collen, who fit in perfectly with the band. The album features such mega-hits as "Photograph," "Rock of Ages," and "Foolin'," as well as a couple of other tracks that could have easily been singles as well, "Rock Rock (Till You Drop)" and "Too Late for Love." PYROMANIA remains one of the best and most popular hard-rock recordings of the '80s.

Oh, good: a stage name that refers specifically to Nazi weaponry, a picture of a dead woman with blood leaking out of her mouth and nose, a photo of the bare-chested singer sporting black latex gloves and standing behind the word "filth," pictures of tanks and U boats -- and on the back, a note from singer Andy LaPlegua that says "Don't be blind; this is NOT a pro-faschist [sic] project." (It's kind of a strange note, since you'd have to be blind to miss what most reasonable observers will interpret as an awful lot of pro-fascist imagery.) So LaPlegua's message is pretty clear: The trappings and symbolism of fascism are fun and exciting, but not to be taken seriously. Not necessarily the lesson one would have taken from the events of the 20th century, but hey, this is only rock & roll, right? The music itself is skillful but not especially noteworthy; LaPlegua has earned his chops the honest way as a member of the popular EBM band Icon of Coil, and there's no questioning his skill as a programmer and arranger. "When Death Embrace [sic] Me" (his skill as an English speaker is a bit more questionable) is an interesting six-eight composition, and on "Pure Tension" ...

Born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Shane Ryan-Roberts began writing songs at age fifteen, inspired by The Beatles, The Doors, and The Rolling Stones. In his twenties, Shane studied 20th Century composition with JOHN CELONA and RUDOLF KOMOROUS, writing several works for chamber orchestra. In 1993, Shane joined the Canadian Forces and became an air navigator on the CC-130 Hercules transport aircraft, serving in the Arctic, Africa, and Europe. In the summer of 1997, while on leave, he returned to writing and recording original music. During a ground tour in 2001-2003, Shane looked to the Mississippi for fresh ideas, studying the works of blues artists such as Son House, Robert Johnson and John Lee Hooker.
