Mahogany Rush was to Jimi Hendrix what jazz saxophonists Sonny Stitt and Ernie Henry were to Charlie Parker -- loving disciples, but not outright clones. Without question, Hendrix was a major influence on the hard rock power trio; you could hear it in leader Frank Marino's singing as well as his electric guitar playing. But ultimately, Mahogany Rush sounded like itself. One of the best studio albums that Mahogany recorded in the 1970s was Strange Universe, a hard rock/heavy metal classic that is as melodic as it is forceful. As aggressively as Mahogany rocks on gems like "Tryin' Anyway," "Dancing Anyway," and "Dear Music," this 1975 LP never fails to be musical. One hears overtones of progressive rock, psychedelic rock, and jazz-rock fusion on much of the material, and Mahogany's lyrics aren't the typical boy-meets-girl fare; in fact, the threesome explores gothic fantasy themes on "Land of 1000 Nights," "Tales of the Spanish Warrior," and other cuts. There are no dull moments on Strange Universe, which points to the fact that Mahogany Rush was among the finest hard rock/metal bands of the '70s. ~ Alex Henderson
Available for the first time ever in single high quality CD format and carefully re-mastered by the artist himself, Just a Minute is proud to present classic reissues of the first three releases by Mahogany Rush. This album is possibly Marino's greatest effort. Though Marino was still only 19 when this was released, Strange Universe brings together everything that was great about the first two releases and takes it a step further. Every cut on this superbly produced album stands out as a greatly crafted piece of work. Mahogany Rush Strange Universe Songs | 1. | Tales of the Spinning Universe |

| Strange Universe Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) First Great Mahogany Rush Album I've been spellbound most of my life after I heard my first Mahogany Rush album. Jimi Hendrix has nothing on Frank Marino. Jimi might have created the sound, but Frank polished it. "Land of 1000 nights" is a perfect example of what I'm talking about.
It will rip out your soul and make you wonder what it is you are hearing, experiencing, as you find yourself enjoying this masterpiece. This is truly one of the "Greatest" albums ever made. Submitted by boswelp (Austin, Tx, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

My all time favorite album I heard this album for the first time at a friends house down the street about about 20 or so yrs. ago. This album just blew me away, and when my friend moved unexpectedly, I've been looking for this album and/or CD ever since and couldn't find it anywhere. I finally did find the CD about 6 yrs. ago, brand new, at a used record shop in my home town. I think it came from Europe I do believe. Like the other post, "Land of 1000 knights, is still my fav., although the whole album is truly a masterpiece. I'm a musician myself, drummer/multi-instrumentalist, and I play this CD all the time still, on my tri-amp, 3000 watt PA system in my home studio. Frank........you are da man! Headphone Heaven A friend was playing this in his "custom" Van the first time I heard it back in like 1975.I was truely slammed up side the head by this.Frank's playing was hard to fathom back them...still is! Land Of 1000 Nights is an all time favorite. The production on this really shines with some decent Headphones on! Submitted by Miles (Maine) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Strange Universe album
$11.89 For prog rock's detractors, Yes's TALES FROM TOPOGRAPHIC OCEANS is the genre's nadir. For admirers it is an artistic pinnacle. Whichever camp you're in, it is hard to deny the sheer chutzpah necessary to undertake this sprawling epic. Though broken up into four sections, TALES greeted 1973 listeners as a single composition spread across four sides of a double album. This was unprecedented in the world of mainstream rock. For the band, it was the closest they would ever ...
| | Harold Mabern Few Miles From Memphis CD (1968)
Strange Universe CD music
$14.15 On A Few Miles from Memphis, recorded by pianist Harold Mabern in 1968, he's joined by tenors George Coleman and Buddy Terry, bassist Bill Lee, and drummer Walter Perkins for a bluesy, rhythm-filled set featuring familiar fare like "A Treat for Bea" and fun originals like "Walkin' Back." There's also the odd inclusion of "There's a Kind of Hush," a pop song that comes out sounding like an old standard here. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford Jr.
When record labels like Prestige release two albums on one CD, it's a great bargain for music fans. A Few Miles from Memphis combines the album of the same name and Rakin' and Scrapin', both recorded by pianist Harold Mabern in 1968. On the first set he's joined by tenors George Coleman and Buddy Terry, bassist Bill Lee, and drummer Walter Perkins for a bluesy, ...
| | Ike & Tina Turner Nutbush City Limits/Feel Good CD (2006) Bonus Tracks
Strange Universe music CDs
$18.09 Raven's 2006 two-fer Nutbush City Limits/Feel Good combines two of Ike & Tina Turner's last albums together and adds five bonus tracks, three of which were taken from other Ike & Tina albums from the early '70s, one taken from a Tina solo record, and one disco mix of "Nutbush City Limits." The album that arrives first on this two-fer was actually the last of these two to be released: Nutbush City Limits appeared in 1973, a year after Feel Good, but its title track is one of Ike & Tina's best-known songs so it's an appropriate choice to kick off this disc. Besides, the two records are so similar in tone and approach, it'd be easy to assume that Feel Good arrived before Nutbush, but that isn't to say they're interchangeable. Both records are hard day-glo funk, overloaded with fuzz guitars, wah wahs, clavinets ...
