| | Buddy Jewell Times Like These CD Buddy Jewell Discography of CDs
When Buddy Jewell was catapulted to stardom by his 2003 win on the reality-TV show NASHVILLE STAR, it was a classic example of an overnight sensation who'd actually been on the cusp of success for decades. A longtime Nashville demo singer with thousands of sessions under his belt, Jewell was finally able to put his professionalism and smooth vocal chops to use in the big leagues.
TIMES LIKE THESE is his sophomore album and a markedly more relaxed-sounding affair than his debut, which was rushed out to capitalize on his television exposure. Jewell's molasses-like voice really caresses every note of the songs here, perfectly matching the easy-flowing ballad "If She Were Any Other Woman" in classic Don Williams style. "Back to You" steps up the energy a bit with careening fiddle and steel guitar, but the Arkansas native still maintains a detached cool. On the self-penned "Dyess, Arkansas," however, the singer really digs in, giving the loping, Merle Haggard-esque story-song a deep intensity. Keeping it stone-cold country, Jewell channels Waylon Jennings on the stomping, remembering-my-rowdy-days track "I'd Run." Far from just another reality-show cash-in, TIMES LIKE THESE is a solid album from a mature artist. Buddy Jewell Times Like These Songs Times Like These Review

Times Like These music CDs
$10.15 Though the front cover of country singer/songwriter Dierks Bentley's debut album finds him posing with a floppy-eared dog and looking like a prime-time TV star, he's considerably hipper than that image might suggest. For one thing, he doesn't employ the members of the Nashville studio mafia who seem to crop up on virtually every major-label country album. For another, he's no pre-fab artist; he co-wrote almost every song here, and for outside material he turned to estimable country mavericks Buddy & Julie Miller ("My Love Will Follow You"). The production is kept agreeably low-key, and there are no Journey-with-steel-guitar ...
| | Very Best Of John Michael Montgomery CD (2003)
Times Like These songs
$10.15 Recorded between 1992 & 2002. Includes liner notes by Robert K. Oermann.
Though he has always essentially been a new traditionalist country singer in the vein of Aaron Tippin and George Strait, John Michael Montgomery found his greatest success with smooth, romantic ballads that recall the work of Glenn Frey as much as that of Merle Haggard. THE VERY BEST OF JOHN MICHAEL MONTGOMERY lives up to its title by including most of the singer's finest and highest-charting singles in both styles, in the process collecting a body of work that virtually defines the "new country" phenomenon. Montgomery has the kind of soothing pipes and perfect phrasing that endear him even ...
| | Faith Hill Fireflies CD (2005)
Times Like These album
$15.65 Coming after the relative commercial disappointment of 2002's pop-oriented CRY--and, not at all coincidentally, Gretchen Wilson's rise as the new Everygirl of country--Faith Hill's FIREFLIES is a blatant attempt to ditch the singer's glamourpuss image and reassert her country roots, such things having become fashionable again. This isn't a problem, however: Shania Twain-like chart pop wasn't Hill's forte, and FIREFLIES brings her back where she belongs.
The first single, "Mississippi Girl," is Hill's best song in years. A Dixie Chicks-like piece of sweet country-pop with a few bluegrass trimmings, the tune was written by country hitmaker John Rich. Rich also penned some of the other standouts here, ...

| | Best Of The Long Ryders CD (2004) (Import) United Kingdom
Times Like These songs
$9.89 Country-rock act the Long Ryders are faithfully represented on this excellent anthology. The inclusion of singles, rare recordings, and out-of-print material makes BEST OF a great bet for fans of the band.
Solid is the word that springs to mind for this au courant collection from the Long Ryders' mid-'80s heyday. It's a loaded word, often used to camouflage reservations, but here it's a positive testament to consistent craftsmanship and professionalism, of substance over surface flash. Best Of shows how the Long Ryders roped together a diverse array of influences, varied songwriter combinations with distinct touches, and a rotating set of vocalists to keep their guitar-driven rock fresh and varied. The disc leads off with singles, a move that shows the group's songwriting craftsmanship throughout because nearly every song pulls you in with a musical or vocal hook. They may not all plant themselves in your brain as easily as the near AC/DC throb of "Looking for Lewis & Clark" or the power-driving "Gunslinger Man," with its nice harmony guitar lead. But they almost all register, so that every time the songs kick in, those chorus and melody hooks come rolling back within a few seconds. A deft pop touch comes to the fore on "I Want You Bad," and "Ivory Tower" gets haunting harmony treatment when the late Gene Clark blends his voice with Steve McCarthy's lead. The varied vocal harmonies are a strong point throughout, notably on the chorus to "Man of Misery" (which gets in its share of interlocked chiming guitar licks, too), while the lovely "If I Were a Bramble and You Were a Rose" veers acoustic and offers "The essence of living is helping what grows" ...
