Following an over five-year hiatus from their pop music careers, an eternity in today's mercurial music frenzy, All Saints members Shaznay Lewis, Melanie Blatt, Nicole Appleton, and Natalie Appleton needed to make a big splash on the scene in order to recapture the success they garnered from their 1997 self-titled sampling. However, the slow pop grooves that launched their careers in 1997 were not going to cut it some ten years later. Therefore, on Studio 1, the third album by the quartet, All Saints shifted away from the music style that nostalgically kept them as has-beens. On Studio 1, listeners hear a more spurred dance version of the Saints, who've shifted their music to R&B, yet overlay it in striking layers of electric pop. The results are strong; the galactic rhythm and blues is a lovely sound from the four girls, who, like Pop Rocks candy, jump and bounce with sweet beats that suit both radio and club dancefloors. Radio hits like "Rock Steady" and "Chick Fit" are solid dance hits, with enticing grooves and kicking tracks. The girls also slow it down impressively, with melodic slow-moving cuts like "Fundamental" and "One Me and U." Unfortunately, while all the music is appealing, it lacks personality and character. The tracks, all composed by Shaznay Lewis and Greg Kurstin, bear no emotional value, and the girls' voices are indistinguishable from one another and digitally enhanced to the point of obscurity. Like a giant corporate birthday gateau, the music is all frosting, no cake, and it borders on sickly. There is no sign of the All Saints from ten years ago, who used to be bona fide pop stars who could actually pen a tune and shed a tear. Ultimately, the music is punching but not powerful, and Shaznay, Nicole, Natalie, and Melanie have all sold out in hopes of restarting their pop careers as if from square one. Had Studio 1 been a debut album by a pop group in 2005 or 2006, it may have been one of the best pop albums in many years, given its infectious cursory beats. However, for the Saints it's a disappointment, because their musical career was always more fleshed-out. Studio 1 is a giant leap for the quartet, just in the wrong direction. ~ Matthew Chisling
After a break of 5 years the UK's coolest girl group, All Saints, are back and release a new single and album. The single, `Rock Steady', written by Shaznay Lewis and Greg Kurstin (Peaches, Back, Lily Allen) and produced by Greg Kurstin combines a vibrant, sassy tune with infectious harmonies and a flavour of reggae. All Saints' two critically lauded albums have sold more than 10 million albums across the globe since the release of their first single 'I Know Where It's At' in 1997. Not one of the quartet's eight singles charted outside the Top 10 - indeed five of them reached Number 1.Their last album, 'Saints and Sinners', was released in 2000 and featured the No.1 single 'Pure Shores'. Now, Melanie, Shaznay, Nicole and Natalie are back together and release the most eagerly awaited comeback album of the year. EMI. 2006.

Studio 1 album
$23.65 Swedish R&B songstress Robyn presents DON'T STOP THE MUSIC featuring 11 tracks including "Keep This Fire Burning" and "Still Your Girl."
After spreading her artistic wings with mixed success on 1999's My Truth, Robyn returns to more commercial fare on Don't Stop the Music. Once again she co-writes every song on the record, excluding a hidden rendition of Swedish standard "Regntunga Skyar," but the album is generally less introspective and more upbeat than her previous effort. Some fans may bemoan this as a backwards step, but truth be told Don't Stop the Music is a much stronger record for it. Robyn has a great ear for a pop hook, and this album is filled with them. In many ways it represents a culmination of the best elements of her first two albums, Robyn Is Here and My Truth. It has the strong melodies and instant pop appeal of the best songs on her debut, combined with the lyrical intelligence and consistency of her second full-length. There's a definite R&B flavor in places, ...

Studio 1 music CDs
$9.85 1991's POP LIFE, the only Bananarama album featuring Jacqui O'Sullivan (who replaced original member Siobhan Fahey when Fahey married Eurythmics' Dave Stewart and left to form the more experimental Shakespear's Sister), is an all-out dance record in the tradition of Soul II Soul and other then-fashionable UK dance outfits. POP LIFE downplays the disco-style Hi-NRG beats and somewhat ...
| | Bananarama Wow! CD (1987)
Studio 1 songs
$9.89 Bananarama followed up their hit-laden True Confessions, which spawned their international chart-topping version of "Venus," with 1987's Wow! True Confessions witnessed the emerging role of Stock, Aitken & Waterman as the trio's producers -- Wow! was wholly assembled by the hitmaking team, which was also responsible for hits by Rick Astley, Kylie Minogue, Dead or Alive, Donna Summer, and countless others. This album is, therefore, a straightforward 1980s dance set, with several songs that went on to become international hits. The only track from this set to make the U.S. Top Ten was "I ...
| | Bananarama Deep Sea Skiving CD (1983)
Studio 1 album
$9.85 Bananarama's first album is by far their best. Before they fell in with the lucrative but often boring Stock, Aitken & Waterman assembly line starting with 1986's True Confessions, Siobhan Fahey, Sarah Dallin, and Keren Woodward were unashamedly poppy, but they had enough artistic credibility to create a debut album that, barring a couple of small missteps, actually works as an album instead of a collection of singles with some filler. (They were even hip enough for their first single to be produced by ex-Sex Pistol Paul Cook.) Of course, the singles are terrific. There are four British chart hits in these 11 songs, and every one of them still sounds terrific, where later hits like "I Can't Help It" are terribly dated. The slinky "Shy Boy" and a rattling cover of the Marvelettes' "He Was Really Sayin' Somethin'" (co-starring the trio's early mentors Fun Boy Three) are classic girl group songs updated for the '80s, every bit ...

Studio 1 music CDs
$13.89 Matthew Dear's mix for the Fabric series is an intensely linear set of buoyant-yet-airtight beats and goofy-but-stern accents. Its full effect will be lost on a sound system or set of headphones that is less than state of the art. Dear clearly put a lot of time into making this, having melded elements from up to three separate tracks at a time to make new tracks (albeit in a less reconstructive manner than Richie Hawtin's DE9: Transitions), but the result ...
