Orange Range have made a name for themselves through their self-proclaimed eclecticism. Based in Okinawa, the band grew up with additional musical influences from the West thanks to the nearby U.S. military presence. Fusing multiple styles (primarily rap and rock), they formed a basic formulaic approach to music in the realm of a poor man's Linkin Park, and continued performing it to great success. The catch is that there are a number of other Japanese bands that have successfully fused hip-hop and rock in varying degrees (from the poppy Bennie K duo to the numerous boy bands and their explorations of genre). The few high spots here tend to be when the band is clearly breaking away from their stated interests. When the band takes on reggae in "Fire Bun," it gets interesting -- not necessarily at the level of other reggae outfits or J-reggae outfits, but interesting. Otherwise, though, Orange Range offers very little new in their self-titled album, only more of the same, and the songs tend to blur together, without true standouts. Each piece is a dense work filled with the basic sludgy guitar riffs and production after-effects that make up much of the sound. The vocals tend to get lost behind the instrumentation more often than not, and offer nothing striking when they do find their way to the front of the mix. Wait for a compilation and give this one a pass. ~ Adam Greenberg Orange Range Review

| | Clannad 2 CD (1974)
Orange Range album
$15.39 Although best known in the US for their later music, which combined Celtic roots with new age and pop influences, the Irish sibling group Clannad started as a traditional Irish folk group. Indeed, all but three tracks on the group's second album, from 1974, are in Gaelic. The acoustic instrumentation, heavy on the harp and pennywhistle, ...
| | Magical Gathering: A Clannad Anthology CDs (2002) Digipak
Orange Range CD music
$15.65 As a survey of the first quarter century or so of Clannad's recording career, this double-CD compilation is intelligently selected and annotated. It draws pretty evenly from the various phases of the group's lifespan, from their most traditional folk-based albums in 1973 and 1974 to the slicker rock, pop, and new age-influenced sounds that gave them some crossover pop success in Europe and America in the 1980s and 1990s. Their most well-known tracks, and cuts with celebrity cameos, are here: the big early-'80s British hit "Harry's Game," "In a Lifetime" (with Bono of U2), "Something to Believe In" (with Bruce Hornsby), "I Will Find You (Theme From 'The Last of the Mohicans')," and four early-'80s songs on which a young Enya (then known as Eithne Brennan) was a vocalist with the band. No criticism can be levied at the packaging, complete with a 44-page booklet of liner notes. What's more problematic is the variation in quality, as the band changes from an exciting group who merged traditional Irish folk with folk-rock and jazz to a less-exciting, still folk-based one to a more successful ...

| | New Musik From A To B (Straight Lines) CD (1980) Bonus Track; Japan
Orange Range album
$24.45 New Musik's FROM A TO B contains the songs "Straight Lines," "Science," and "Living By Numbers."
New Musik's debut album, From A to B, is one of the best -- and most influential -- electronic LPs of the '80s. Its keyboards may sound dated, but there's a freshness to these charming, unpretentious songs that hasn't been spoiled by technological advances in computerized instrumentation. Many new wave revivalists have attempted to capture the nerdy vocals and quirky synthesized bleeps of From A to B and failed. This record is a product of its time, recorded when keyboards were viewed as eventually replacing guitar and bass as rock & roll tools. While many synth pop groups became mired in existential woe to show that they had emotions underneath the layers of Casio hiccups, New Musik is having a blast on From A to B. "With robot precision/We're gonna be doin' just fine," sings Tony Mansfield (guitars, keyboards, vocals) with geek sincerity on the exhilarating "Straight Lines." Like Kraftwerk, New Musik uses keyboards to create moods and not just to make feet move. However, From A to B is more accessible than any Kraftwerk album. The tracks on the LP are structured like traditional pop songs with choruses catchy enough for the Beatles, a band whom New Musik would cover later on 1982's disappointing Warp. There are no love ditties, but tracks like the soaring "On Islands" generate warmth and the group often utilizes acoustic strumming to prevent everything from seeming too mechanical. "Science" is nerdy sci-fi dance music years before Thomas Dolby. The CD reissue adds three bonus tracks -- "Missing Persons," "She's a Magazine," and "Sad Films" -- that make the album even more appealing. Somehow, the archaic synthesizers aren't embarrassing; instead, the years have preserved their coolness. ~ Michael Sutton

| | Swampadelica S'AC Passe' CD (2008)
Orange Range album
$16.45 Entitled in Haitian Kreyol, “S'AC PASSÉ?” is a greeting meaning “What's going on?” to which the traditional response is “N'ap Boule!”, or, our fire is burning. As the title may suggest S'AC PASSÉ? finds the band blending lead vocalist's Nadïne LaFond's Haitian Kreyol with English and mixing instrumentation such as the American jazz & rock staples of Hammond B3 & electric guitar, with various world instruments. Guitarist/co-songwriter Brian Herkert notes “This album represents a sort of a musical reverse migration. It starts with the current sounds of rock and hip-hop, travels to the Gulf states with funk and early American blues, from there moves to the Caribbean with Haitian Kreyol and the rhythms of reggae and ska and finally ends up back in Africa via Nadine's African vocal styles and the use of instrumentation such as the hindehoo, udu and kalimba.” S'AC PASSÉ? is produced by Swampadelica and J. Kahrs and recorded at Trey Anastasio’s Vermont based studio, “The Barn” as well as the band members' home studios. Good things are happening all around for the band at the time of this release. Nadïne LaFond is currently singing in the studio with Phish bassist Mike Gordon. Nadïne sang on moe.’s new album, “Sticks & Stones”, and recently sang with the band on tour (including an appearance ...
