This is the Japanese import edition of Dannii Minogue's NEON NIGHTS featuring 16 tracks including two bonus recordings.
There's something about those Minogue sisters. No matter how many times they seem to be down for the count, a surprise comeback hit is always just around the corner. Dannii has never quite achieved the level of superstardom that sister Kylie has attained, but she has shown equal tenacity. Released in 1997, Girl may have been a commercial failure, but it succeeded in repositioning her as a sophisticated club artist rather than a B-list pop singer. That album caught on in the burgeoning trance scene of the mid-'90s, and Neon Nights partially follows that trend into the 2000s on tracks such as "Who Do You Love Now?," the out-of-nowhere comeback collaboration with Riva that gave Dannii the biggest hit of her career. Swedish R&B songstress Robyn presents DON'T STOP THE MUSIC featuring 11 tracks including "Keep This Fire Burning" and "Still Your Girl."
After spreading her artistic wings with mixed success on 1999's My Truth, Robyn returns to more commercial fare on Don't Stop the Music. Once again she co-writes every song on the record, excluding a hidden rendition of Swedish standard "Regntunga Skyar," but the album is generally less introspective and more upbeat than her previous effort. Some fans may bemoan this as a backwards step, but truth be told Don't Stop the Music is a much stronger record for it. Robyn has a great ear for a pop hook, and this album is filled with them. In many ways it represents a culmination of the best elements of her first two albums, Robyn Is Here and My Truth. It has the strong melodies and instant pop appeal of the best songs on her debut, combined with the lyrical intelligence and consistency of her second full-length. Bananarama's first album is by far their best. Before they fell in with the lucrative but often boring Stock, Aitken & Waterman assembly line starting with 1986's True Confessions, Siobhan Fahey, Sarah Dallin, and Keren Woodward were unashamedly poppy, but they had enough artistic credibility to create a debut album that, barring a couple of small missteps, actually works as an album instead of a collection of singles with some filler. (They were even hip enough for their first single to be produced by ex-Sex Pistol Paul Cook.) Of course, the singles are terrific. There are four British chart hits in these 11 songs, and every one of them still sounds terrific, where later hits like "I Can't Help It" are terribly dated. The slinky "Shy Boy" and a rattling cover of the Marvelettes' "He Was Really Sayin' Somethin'" (co-starring the trio's early mentors Fun Boy Three) are classic girl group songs updated for the '80s, every bit as credible as any mid-level Spector or Motown singles.
