| | We Are Family CD
Leave it to Time Life to assemble a compilation that represents a musical era beautifully. It's not that they don't leave things out -- they do -- it's more that as a company, they get the flavor of something and keep it; whether it's on a single disc of soul tunes like this one or a box set, they are consistently excellent. We Are Family is a collection of killer '70s soul. Don't look for rarities; don't look to the vaults. Instead, this set contains 18 burning tracks of uplifting soul, funk, and early disco. The vocals on each cut are magnificent, and some of the hits here include "O-o-h Child" by the Five Stairsteps, "Backfield in Motion" by Mel & Tim, "Shining Star" by Earth, Wind & Fire, "I'll Be Good to You" by the Brothers Johnson (Whatever happened to them? They were soul monsters!), and many others. This baby is solid from top to bottom, and the sound is tough to beat. ~ Thom Jurek

| | Maxwell Now CD (2001)
We Are Family album
$8.89 "Lifetime" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance.
Rebounding from the slight sophomore lag generated by 1998's EMBRYA, Maxwell's follow-up NOW abandons the neo-soul man's usual M.O. of using a conceptual arc of songs, and instead focuses on individual cuts. Romance remains the main ingredient found in this Brooklyn native's banquet of song, and although he stands firmly in the neo-soul camp of D'Angelo and Erykah, his use of various stylistic nuances once again stamps him as an original item. Twangy country-flavored licks and subtle DJ scratches pop up throughout the lament "Was My Girl," and scratchy ...
| | Best Of The Gap Band CD (1995)
We Are Family CD music
$11.99 A collection from the Mercury funk lineup that covers the hits from the first five Gap Band albums. Every major hit that they had is included here. What one might notice is that all of the major hits ("You Dropped a Bomb on Me," "Burn Rubber on Me," "Early in the Morning," and "I Don't Believe You Want to Get up and Dance") all sound surprisingly similar. This may or may not be a large surprise ...

| | Ray Luv Forever Hustlin' CD (1995)
We Are Family songs
$7.59 In the tradition of classic Bay Area rap, following the lineage of artists such as the Mack, Mac Dre and Mac Mall, Ray Luv delivers funked-out "tales of triple beams and ice cream." With a lyrical style similar to that of 2Pac (during the late '80s the two emcees were in a group together called Strictly Dope), Ray Luv chronicles his participation in the game with a flare that's much respected throughout Northern Cali and beyond. With Khayree, the genius behind Mac Mall's Illegal Business, providing his trademarked production and beat changes, Forever Hustlin' practically serves as a blueprint for Bay Area playa rap. In 1995 the album indeed battled with the Luniz' Operation Stackola for regional supremacy. Sporting heavy, heavy bass and Dr. Dre-influenced synths, ...
