For the second time in his career, Canadian country neo-traditionalist, or former neo-traditionalist Paul Brandt issues a Christmas recording. The reason for the comment "former" in front of neo-traditionalist is because here on A Gift, his opening read of "Let It Snow," would be more at home on a Louis Prima or Brian Setzer record with a huge horn section and a string orchestra to match. The tune swings in beat fashion with only an upright piano and a pedal steel to remind the listener that Brandt's supposed to be a country singer, though to be fair, his voice betrays this as well. The title cut brings us back to earth, however, and offers the listener renewed proof as to why Brandt is one of the best country singers in the business. He's up there with George Strait, Ronnie Dunn, and Randy Travis. In fact, the title track is so moving it's almost worth the purchase price by itself. Other tracks don't fare so well. "White Christmas" just doesn't cut it, and it's not his fault; there are so many fine readings of this it's tough to find one that makes it in the big leagues. The bluesy, funky reading of "Go Tell It on the Mountain" is original and fine, and the track "Christmas Convoy" should never have been thought of, let alone recorded. "Mary Did You Know," and "Hands" are gorgeous, though. So A Gift is a mixed bag, but there are certainly cuts here for anyone's Christmas compilation. ~ Thom Jurek Paul Brandt Gift Songs | 1. | Let It Snow |

Gift album
$11.69 The marketing department at Warner Brothers must have really wanted to get a jump on the holiday season when they released Faith Hill's 2008 Christmas album, JOY TO THE WORLD, in September. Hill's set of carols and traditional songs may not suit the late summer, but that doesn't make JOY TO THE WORLD any less of a treat. As albums like BREATHE and FIREFLIES proved, Hill has no problem crossing over to mainstream audiences, and this Christmas set (the singer's first) should strengthen that appeal. If the song selection itself isn't surprising--including the usual fare like "What Child is This," "O Come All Ye Faithful," and "Silent Night"--the arrangements are. A large orchestra, featuring brass, strings, reeds, percussion, and two different choirs, give these renditions ...

| | Christmas With The New Christy Minstrels: Complete! CD (2001)
Gift songs
$15.05 Christmas With the New Christy Minstrels: Complete! offers not one, but two albums by the group of the same name. Interestingly, because of a number of personnel changes, none of the members present for Merry Christmas! in 1963 remained with the group in 1966 when Christmas With the Christies was recorded. While the group has been eclipsed by Peter, Paul, and Mary over time, the New Christy Minstrels' star shone as bright as any folk group in the mid-'60s. The group carved out a unique choral sound, achieved with the help of nine members. When the Christies combined complex arrangements with several talented lead singers on songs like "Beautiful City" and "Tell It on the Mountain," they created a rich tapestry of sound. With nine singers, only the most ardent fans know that the group was the brainchild of Randy Sparks, or that Nick Woods and Art Podell handled the arrangements on the early albums. The bottom line to most fans was how good the group sounded on songs like "The Shepherd Boy" and "Parson Brown." In fact, quite a few people consider Merry Christmas! to be the group's best album and have ...
| | Burl Ives Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer CD (1995)
Gift album
$4.99 The Rankin/Bass animagic film Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer first appeared on December 6, 1964. Since then, it has become the longest-running of all holiday TV specials (with, we hope, no end in sight). It's fitting that the grandfather of all Christmas specials features Burl Ives, still remembered warmly by millions as the voice behind the film's narrator, Sam the Snowman. Although this soundtrack bears his name, Ives appears only on a handful of songs: "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer," "A Holly Jolly Christmas," and "Silver and Gold." The remaining vocals are handled by various cast members: "Jingle Jingle Jingle" features Stan Francis as Santa, "We're a Couple of Misfits" is sung by Billie Mae Richards (the voice of Rudolph) and Paul Soles (the voice of Hermie), "There's Always Tomorrow" is immortalized by Janet Orenstein (as Clarice), and a chorus shares "The Most Wonderful Day of the Year." The real musical genius behind the movie is Johnny Marks, a songwriter who had earlier written the song "Rudolph the Red-Nosed ...

| | Sergio Mendes Collectables Classics CDs (2006)
Gift CD music
$51.15 By and large, this Collectables Classics series, compiling a slew of albums on X amount of CDs and dropping them in a wooden box, is a problematic exercise and is of dubious worth. It leaves too much to chance. However, this collection of Sergio Mendes' early, pre-A&M and later, post-A&M material, doesn't fall into that category completely. This five-disc whopper contains no less than nine individual albums by the Brazilian bandleader, composer, pianist, and arranger who recorded before and after his million-selling albums for A&M with Atlantic. Musically, this material is mostly top-notch. It includes albums such as Mendes' American debut with his Brasil '65 group, In Person at El Matador, and his post-A&M 1968 instrumental classic Sergio Mendes' Favorite Things as well as the 1977 soundtrack for the film Pele. But those three LPs are on two CDs in the same jewel box! Elsewhere it's more orderly, such as on the disc than includes a pair of 1966 albums, The Great Arrival and Bully!, or the pairing of The Swinger from Rio (also from 1966; it featured a new reading of "Girl from Ipanema" with its composer, Antonio Carlos Jobim playing guitar) and The Beat of Brazil from 1967 (with arrangements by Jobim). The final disc in this set pairs two Elektra albums from ...
