That renaissance gal is at it again. As in THE BODYGUARD, Whitney Houston does double duty as star and soundtrack provider for THE PREACHER'S WIFE. Don't look for her to be sticking to the commercial pop-R&B sound that served her so well on her last soundtrack album, though. THE PREACHER'S WIFE finds Houston reaching back to her roots in gospel, and collaborating with some stellar gospel artists, including her mother, Cissy.
Several cuts here, including "Hold On, Help Is On The Way" and "I Go To The Rock," find the soulful Georgia Mass Choir supporting Houston in her return to the fold. On "He's All Over Me," Houston is joined by gospel great Shirley Caesar as well. On a more modern tip, Houston delivers "Somebody Bigger Than You And I," accompanied by a veritable who's-who of contemporary R&B, including her husband, Bobby Brown, and Brown's New Edition bandmates ...
| | Chris Brown Graffiti CDs (2009) Deluxe Edition
Another Early Evening album
$14.37 Most of Graffiti is a natural progression for Chris Brown. Like many young cred-seeking male singers who have just exited their teenage years, Brown emphasizes womanizing and hedonism and balances it out with a couple clean and empty ballads, as well as a couple relatively lighthearted Europop numbers. A handful of songs deal with his relationship with Rihanna, as well as the fallout from his assault of her. ~ Andy Kellman
Most of Graffiti -- that is, the songs that do not detail what ex-girlfriend Rihanna and the rest of the world have done to him -- is a natural progression for Chris Brown. Like many young cred-seeking male singers who have just exited their teenage years, Brown clumsily emphasizes womanizing and hedonism and balances it out with a couple clean and empty ballads. Out of this portion of the album, only a couple songs leave a lasting impression, and when they do, the silly things that come out of Brown's mouth tend to be the reason; take "As stingy as you are, I think you ready," part of "Take My Time"'s chorus and hopefully ...

| | Ben Pollack Vol 1 CDs (2000) Remastered
Another Early Evening music CDs
$16.49 Ben Pollack led one of the most potentially significant little big bands during the second half of the 1920s. However listening to his recordings can be a bit frustrating in a similar way as it is to listen to Jean Goldkette's band with Bix Beiderbecke. Pollack's music was compromised by the leader's desire to balance the jazz with commercially accessible music although he himself was a fine drummer. All of Pollack's early recordings as a bandleader are scheduled to be reissued in full (with all of the alternate takes) by the Canadian Jazz Oracle label. Volume 1 covers a nearly two-year period and is highlighted by "He's the Last Word," "Memphis Blues," "Buy Buy for Baby (Or Baby Will Bye Bye You)," and "The Whoopee Stomp" (one of three numbers released as by Jimmy McHugh's Bostonians). Benny Goodman and Glenn Miller are heard in their recording debuts and the other key players include cornetist Jimmy McPartland and trombonist Glenn Miller, plus Fud Livingston, Larry Binyon, or Bud Freeman on tenor. The 15 songs are joined by ten alternate takes (placed at the end of the CD) and virtually every selection has at least one interesting jazz solo. The best of Jazz Oracle's perfectly ...

$16.95 The Atipico trio (Carlo Actis Dato, Piero Ponzo and Beppe Di Filippo) perform on baritone sax, bass clarinets, alto saxes, piccolo, soprano, and tenor sax. Satirical, serious, undefinable, ironic, meticulous, contemporary, futuristic, dated, impassioned,
This CD presents Atipico Trio's third lineup in three albums; then again, since the group releases an album every six to eight years, that's something you come to expect. And as long as Carlo Actis Dato stays on board, the wild experiments and entertaining zaniness will remain key features. This time around, the mighty baritone sax and bass clarinet player joins forces with Piero Ponzo (alto sax and clarinet) and Beppe Di Filippo (soprano, alto, and tenor sax) -- Ponzo is a regular member of Dato's ...
