Although they may not go by the Savatage moniker, Jon Oliva's Pain reflects the aforementioned band's knack for anthemic metal with a heavy progressive edge. Also, comparisons to Savatage are inevitable when you have the group's longest-tenured singer, Jon Oliva, at the helm. Their third full-length overall, 2006's Maniacal Renderings, brings to mind an era when metalheads favored skin-tight jeans, white high-top sneakers, and leather jackets (ahem, the late '80s, in case you didn't know). But unlike most metal bands that lean towards the proggier side of things, Oliva doesn't utilize oft-annoying, over-the-top operatic vocal shtick. Instead, his voice brings to mind Alice Cooper on such tracks as "Time to Die," while musically, tunes like the album opening "Through the Eyes of the King" sound like less-crazed, vintage Megadeth. And the group even manages to sneak in a power ballad, to boot, with "The Answer." With some newer metal bands coming off like a bad imitation of late-'80s metal, Maniacal Renderings often sounds precisely like what some of these young cubs are striving for. ~ Greg Prato

Maniacal Renderings album
$13.09 With most contemporary country artists, you could guarantee that a song called "American Ride" would be a slice of jingoism, but Toby Keith isn't like most country singers. His "American Ride" casts a cynical eye at desperate housewives and wannabe pop stars, not celebrating down-home values but wondering where we're all headed on this American Ride at the end of the 2000s, a sentiment not all that far removed from some of Keith's previous social commentary, which makes it a mild surprise that it is the only song here that doesn't come from his own pen. As superb and striking as it is, it's not necessarily a good keystone for the rest of the record, which does have a few tougher numbers that pick up on the lean, mean vibe of 2008's THAT DON'T MAKE ME A BAD GUY -- "Every Dog Has Its Day," the sly "If I Had One," and the heavy blues stomp "Loaded" -- but spends more time on the softer side, even when he kicks up a bit of dust on the dancefloor on "You Can't Read My Mind" or does a funny, respectful salute to military life on "Ballad of Balad." In other words, the real touchstone for the rest of the record is "Tender as I Wanna Be," where he lets ...

Maniacal Renderings CD music
$13.15 It's hard to not be impressed by the sheer sonic onslaught that is otherwise known as Nile. Except to the most hardened death metal fanatic, the genre has a way of sounding the same after a while, but Nile is one of the few exceptions -- able to put their own unmistakable fingerprints on this heavy duty style (Egyptian-influenced lyrics and musical bits, highly impressive instrumental ...

$7.85 If a local music scene is truly hot, it can have an impact internationally. Detroit soul in the '60s, London punk in the late '70s, Prince's Minneapolis school of funk-rock in the '80s, Seattle grunge in the early '90s -- all of those local scenes ended up becoming influential in more than one country. But some local scenes remain a local secret, and that has pretty much been the case with the doom metal/stoner rock scene of Washington, D.C., and its Maryland and Virginia suburbs. Some well-known doom and stoner bands have come out of that area -- Spirit Caravan, for example -- but even so, the scene hasn't ...

Maniacal Renderings CD music
$12.69 Swink is an original acoustic-based folk/rock/blues band led by singer/songwriter Kathy Forste and guitarist/songwriter Gordon Hobbs and bassist Neal Wolahan. Kathy is a poetic singer/songwriter from Kansas City, Missouri. Her music has been described as gutsy folk/rock/blues and her voice been compared as a cross between Mary-Chapin Carpenter and Janis Joplin. Gordon is an inventive finger-style guitarist/songwriter. Neal is a powerful "on top" east coast bass player. Currently, the band is promoting our new CD, "Too Late For Regrets." Kathy wrote eight of the eleven songs, Gordon wrote two, and Gordon and Kathy wrote one of the songs together. The sound of the CD is acoustic-based, but goes far beyond a typical acoustic sound. The CD is packed with powerful ballads, intelligent social statements, fun love songs and a toe-tapping bluegrass instrumental. Kathy's vocals have a raw emotional delivery on such songs as "In This World" and "Too Late For Regrets." Gordon plays wonderful ear-pleasing melodies on the instrumental "Livonia" and the Irish ballad "Come Back, Jamie" and shows off his rock n' roll chops on "Intimate Strangers" and "Waiting for a Savior." Neal plays a melodic yet steady bass on "Me and Scarecrow" and "Angry at the World." Other highlights include the country-influenced "Give Me A Smile" and the lush, beautiful song about lost love, "Amber Room." Each member of the band has a long history in music. Kathy started writing songs when she was 7, started playing guitar at age 13, graduated with a minor in music and has been playing solo and in bands for the last 8 years. Gordon has been playing guitar in some band or another since he was fourteen. His style of playing is a combination of finger-picking and flat-picking. He comes up with some of the most memorable and creative riffs you'll ever hear. Neal's background is in the East Coast punk scene, where he played in a variety of bands. He moved to Kansas City in the summer of 2001 from Washington, DC, where he played in a very popular original band, Despondent Astronauts; who themselves recorded three highly acclaimed CDs. Kathy and Gordon have been playing together since the winter of 2000 and have played throughout the states of Missouri and Kansas. Recently Kathy and Gordon opened for Oscar- and Grammy- nominated singer/songwriter Stephen Bishop ("On and On", "Theme From Tootsie", "Separate Lives"). Kathy was recently commissioned by KMOS-TV in Warrensburg, Missouri to write, ...
