For the soundtrack to his 2006 Mayan epic, APOCALYPTO, director Mel Gibson called upon prolific composer James Horner (TITANIC, TROY) to create the film's moody score. Horner's ominous, percussion-heavy pieces expertly capture the film's violent, tension-filled scenes, and are enhanced at times by the haunting vocal performances of Rahat Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, the nephew of the late revered Qawwali singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.

Based on the Broadway musical, which, in turn, is based on vintage ABBA tunes, the 2008 Hollywood adaptation of MAMMA MIA! features the star-studded cast performing classic tracks by the beloved Swedish pop group. While most cast members (including Amanda Seyfried and Pierce Brosnan), acquit themselves admirably, Meryl Streep truly shines on buoyant songs such as the title track and "Dancing Queen."
ABBA principals Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus turned to stage musicals after their band's demise and composed two, one of which, CHESS, ran in the West End and on Broadway. For their third stage effort, they returned to their ABBA catalog and put together MAMMA MIA!, a show that employs their old songs (with occasional lyric revisions) in the service of a libretto by Catherine Johnson about a girl who tries to discover her father's identity in time to have him give her away at her wedding. So, how does MAMMA MIA! compare to an ABBA greatest-hits album? Well, the recordings are less fully produced than the originals, and in that sense less impressive. Based on Gregory Maguire's novel of the same name, the Broadway musical WICKED creates a history for the two witches from L. Frank Baum's OZ books. Through composer/lyricist Stephen Schwartz's emotive songs, the show reveals the unlikely friendship between Elphaba (Idina Menzel), who eventually becomes the Wicked Witch, and Glinda (Kristin Chenoweth), the Good Witch.
The dramatic, horn-laden "No One Mourns the Wicked" starts the story in striking fashion, with the death of the ruby-slipper-wearing Wicked Witch. As Glinda appears, Elphaba's backstory begins, leading to jaunty numbers like "Popular" and "Defying Gravity," as well as ballads such as "I'm Not That Girl" and "For Good," with Menzel and Chenoweth showing off their substantial vocal chops. Adding to the boisterous energy is musical theater veteran Joel Grey, who brings a bit of Broadway's past to his role as the Wizard.

On this Canadian trio's self-titled debut, Johnny and the Moon (apparently the name of the frontperson and the backing band, though it is not immediately clear) create a pleasant collection of lower-key but affecting songs that stand out in an era of overstated pageantry that seems to define the current state of North American indie rock. Beginning with an adaptation of the traditional song "Green Rocky Road" that establishes a mood of gentle rambling, thanks in part to lead singer Johnny's calm, slightly wounded voice, Johnny and the Moon deftly suggest any number of recent roots nicely recombined.
