Producers: Bernard Edwards, Nile Rodgers, Kenny Lehman, Bob Edwards. Engineers: Robert Drake, Mike Frondelli, Ron Johnson, Tom Savarese, Bob Clearmountain. Recorded at Electric Lady Studios and The Power Station, New York. All songs co-written by Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers except "Dance Dance, Dance (Yowsah, Yowsah, Yowsah)" and "Sao Paulo" (Bernard Edwards/Nile Rodgers/Kenny Lehman). Although their follow-up album, C'EST CHIC, was the one that contained their anthemic disco hit "La Freak," this 1977 debut set the stage for the band's ultimate success as one of the iconic vocal groups of the disco era. Songwriters Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards (guitarist and bassist, respectively) were masters at concocting simple, driving grooves with percussive, hooky basslines, and an aura of decadent fun, underscored by the indiscriminate dropping of French expressions. Lead singer Norma Jean Wright was particularly expressive in her upper range, creating a template for the hot-to-trot, feline sound associated with female disco vocalists. Backing singer Alfa Anderson holds her own here, too, and the women's voices blend well on such hits as "Dance, Dance, Dance" and "Strike Up the Band." When Chic's self-titled debut album came out in 1978, many rock critics gave it very negative reviews and failed to see just how rhythmically and harmonically exciting Chic's blend of funk, soul, and Euro-disco was. But one critic who often gave Chic favorable coverage was Don Waller, who hit the nail on the head when he exalted the band as "an uptown version of Booker T & the MG's." It was a most insightful analogy -- Chic's music was a lot sleeker than Booker T & the MG's raw, instrumental Memphis soul, but like Booker T., the Niles Rodgers/Bernard Edwards team turned out some of the most infectious and influential R&B party grooves of their era. Although not quite as strong as Chic's next two albums -- C'est Chic and Risqué -- would be, this highly enjoyable album put the group on the map commercially thanks to the infectious hits "Dance, Dance, Dance" and "Everybody Dance." Some rock critics saw Chic as just another faceless disco production, but, in fact, the opposite is true -- with this album, Chic fashioned a very distinctive and recognizable sound that proved to be as influential in its era as Booker T & the MGs were in theirs. The sound that Chic established with this album was one that everyone from Queen and ABC to Sister Sledge, the Sugarhill Gang, and Madonna would benefit from. ~ Alex Henderson Chic Music | List Price | $12.97 (You save $2.32) | | Category | Rock/Pop Albums, Rock CDs, Soul/R&B, Disco, R&B | | Label | Wounded Bird | | Orig Year | 1977 | | All Time Sales Rank | 47573 | | CD Universe Part number | 7327293 | | Discs | 1 | | Release Date | Jan 30, 2007 | | Studio/Live | Studio | | Mono/Stereo | Stereo | | Personnel | Nile Rodgers - guitar, vocals Bernard Edwards - bass, vocals Tony Thompson - drums

The Chic Strings: Gene Orloff, Karen Milne, Cheryl Hong, Karen Karlsrud, Valerie Haywood. Recorded at The Power Station and Electric Lady, New York, New York. Chic was very much in its prime when it recorded its third album, Risqué, which contained hits that ranged from "My Feet Keep Dancing" and "My Forbidden Lover" to the influential "Good Times." That feel-good manifesto is one of the first songs that comes to mind when one thinks of the disco era and the Jimmy Carter years, but Chic's popularity certainly wasn't limited to the disco crowd. The fact that "Good Times" became the foundation for both the Sugarhill Gang's "Rapper's Delight" and Queen's "Another One Bites the Dust" tells you a lot -- it underscores the fact that Chic was influencing everyone from early rappers to art rockers. A group that many rock critics were so quick to dismiss was having an impact in many different areas. From hip-hoppers to new wavers in London and Manchester, Risqué was considered primary listening. And Risqué is impressive not only because of its up-tempo cuts, but also because of slow material that includes the lush "A Warm Summer Night" and the dramatic ballad "Will You Cry (When You Hear This Song)." Risqué is definitely among Chic's essential albums. ~ Alex Henderson They made two great albums, yet for some reason this one comes out on top over C'est Chic. They represented the pinnacle of late 70s disco music, with a brand of slick soul that was made for the dance floor. Nile Rodgers and the late Bernard Edwards were the Babyfaces of their day. Their compositions, record production and sparing musicianship (guitar and

The Chic Strings: Marianne Carroll, Cheryl Hong, Karen Milne. Recorded at The Power Station, New York, New York. Released in 1978, just as disco began to peak, C'est Chic and its pair of dancefloor anthems, "Le Freak" and "I Want Your Love," put Chic at the top of that dizzying peak. The right album at the right time, C'est Chic is essentially a rehash of Chic, the group's so-so self-titled debut from a year earlier. That first album also boasted a pair of floor-filling anthems, "Dance Dance Dance" and "Everybody Dance," and, like C'est Chic, it filled itself out with a mix of disco and ballads. So, essentially, C'est Chic does everything its predecessor did, except it does so masterfully: each side similarly gets its timeless floor-filler ("Le Freak," "I Want Your Love"), quiet storm come-down ("Savoir Faire," "At Last I Am Free"), feel-good album track ("Happy Man," "Sometimes You Win"), and moody album capper ("Chic Cheer," "[Funny] Bone"). Producers Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers were quite a savvy pair and knew that disco was as much a formula as anything. As evidenced here, they definitely had their fingers on the pulse of the moment, and used their perceptive touch to craft one of the few truly great disco albums. In fact, you could even argue that C'est Chic very well may be the definitive disco album. After all, countless artists scored dancefloor hits, but few could deliver an album this solid, and nearly as few could deliver one this epochal as well. C'est Chic embodies everything wonderful and e

Chic
$11.99 Personnel includes: Olivia Newton-John, John Travolta, Cliff Richard (vocals); Electric Light Orchestra. Producers: John Farrar, Jeff Lynne, Stephen Kipner. Compilation producer: Mike Ragogna. Recorded between 1973 and 1983. Includes liner notes by Robyn Flans. Digitally remastered by Garvin Lurssen (The Mastering Lab, Hollywood, California). Liner Note Author: Robyn Flans. Photographers: Herb Ritts; Claude Mougin; Charles Bush. UTV Records' Magic: The Very Best of Olivia Newton-John is the best compilation ever assembled on Newton-John's career, largely because it does cover her entire career, hitting every major point from her early-'70s soft country-pop hits, like "I Honestly Love You," through her star-making turn in Grease, selections from Xanadu, up to the Physical era and its fallout. That takes a total of 20 tracks, plus the bonus track of "The Grease Megamix," and that gives a listener nearly everything they need from Olivia. When the biggest complaint is that the collection sequences "You're the One That I Want" before "Summer Nights," it means that this is certainly a collection that can be called definitive. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine All those nostalgia mavens and time-travelers who revel in '70s pop culture will find the ante upped a notch upon the release of MAGIC. You can listen to Carpenters tribute albums and sing Abba songs till your face turns blue, but if you really want to plunge back into the '70s experience, the greatest hits of Australian siren Olivia Newton-John are the only way to travel. Her dulcet tones float gently over some of the most carefully constructed ballads and seamlessly crafted arrangements of the decade. And even a cursory listen to "Please Mr. Please" or "Let Me Be There" will serve to remind that Olivia achieved a fair amount of country crossover back in the day as well. Sure, tracks like "Physical" bring things into the more prurient '80s realm, but by and large this compilation is just the thing to

Arrangers: Nile Rodgers; Bernard Edwards. Towards the end of the disco era and its subsequent anti-disco movement, Chic had established itself as a major tour de force for themselves and other artists on the R&B circuit. But Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers had already been making strides to distance themselves from the disco era while it was in full swing. And by the time 1980s Real People had hit stores, it was distinctively different; low key in tempo for the majority of the album. Gone were many of the disco anthems that preached excess, getting down on the dancefloor and good times -- in its place lyrics with an emphasis on substance over flash ("Real People" and "Open Up"). Skipping over 1981's Take It Off, this Wounded Bird two-fer concludes with 1982's Tongue in Chic. While there weren't many commercial hits or radio singles that won over the R&B masses, several cuts here hold up against many of the chart-topping hits of Chic's contemporaries. The dirty bassline and drum shuffles of "I Feel Your Love Coming On" recall shades of D Train while "Hey Fool" sounds like a nice hybrid of Teena Marie and Phyllis Hyman. Definitely not essential by any means, but fans who slept on this the first time around may want to pick this one up and re-examine some of these dusty gems. ~ Rob Theakston

Recording information: The Latin Casino, Cherry Hill, NJ. Arrangers: Jack Faith; Norman Harris; Richard Rome; Ron Kersey; Vincent Montana, Jr. Lovers of classic Philly soul had reason to celebrate in 2006, when Collectables Records reissued Blue Magic's first three studio albums (Blue Magic, The Magic of the Blue, and 13 Blue Magic Lane) and this live recording on CD. Recorded in 1975 at Cherry Hill, NJ's Latin Casino, this two-CD set (originally a double LP) finds Blue Magic sharing the bill with two other '70s soulsters: Major Harris (an ex-member of the Delfonics and cousin of the late producer Norman Harris) and Margie Joseph (who is the only non-Philadelphian on the bill). Blue Magic soar on inspired performances of their hits "Sideshow," "What's Come Over Me" (a duet with the talented if underrated Joseph), "We're on the Right Track Now," and "Stop to Start," and Harris doesn't let listeners down on the congenial "Loving You Is Mellow" or his sexy 1975 smash "Love Won't Let Me Wait" (which was covered by the late Luther Vandross in 1989). Regrettably, Harris was a one-hit wonder as a solo artist; "Love Won't Let Me Wait" was his only major solo hit, but his contributions to Live leave no doubt that he was a skillful provider of Philly soul. Joseph, meanwhile, is quite enjoyable when she gives Paul McCartney's "My Love" the Northern soul treatment, although her performance of Morris Albert's "Feelings" is undeniably the low point of this album. Joseph tries to inject some soul into Albert's insipid, mushy ballad, but it doesn't work; Joseph, for all her talent,

In 1981, a lot of rock & rollers were claiming that the disco era was officially over. Disco, of course, never really died -- a lot of the dance-pop, house music, Hi-NRG, and Latin freestyle that was recorded in the '80s and '90s was essentially disco -- but as far as many of the radio stations and record company A&R men of 1981 were concerned, disco was dead. And that was bad news for Chic, a group closely identified with the disco era. Even though a lot of Chic's work had as much to do with funk and soul as it did with the Euro-disco sound, Chic was unable to live down its reputation as a disco group. But Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards gave it a try with 1981's Take It Off, an admirable, i

$13.15 A fine blend of sweet and simple ballads and softly textured dance grooves, Lucas' fifth set is her strongest collection. The oft-sampled, hard-to-resist groove of "Show Me You're Coming From" turned out to be one of her highest charting singles (R&B number 23); and it's a wonder that nothing else here had that sort of impact. "Rockin' for Your Love" layers midnight keyboard stylings and swell guitar riffs over a slightly abstract drum groove given royal treatment by Lucas' delayed attacks and soothing tone. Produced by Nicholas Caldwell of the Whispers, the tune carries the signature Solar sound while remaining clearly distinctive. Other highlights include the comforting slow jam "Sweet Love"; "Is It a Dream," a 1970s-inspired mid-tempo number benefiting from crystal-clear male background harmonies; and the kinetic funk number "Men." An essential for any Lucas fan or student of early-'80s R&B. ~ Justin M. Kantor
