3 stars Part Hack Job, Part Fever Dream, All Eye Candy.
This film is pretty to look at. It's also entertaining. However, it's not genius. It's based on a book by the same title by James Ellroy which IS genius. The director starts out strong, the acting is great, the sound and cinematography are beautiful..... But then it falls on its face. It seems the director chopped out fairly large chunks of the story and then created other parts whole cloth to make it end in somthing resembling two hours. That's too bad. If he had stuck to the story line and developed the film to follow the book more closely, I'd feel different. Or maybe if I'd never read the book, I would have thought it was great. As it stands, it disappoints, although it does do it prettily.

3 stars Not What I Expected....
The movie wasn't really about the Black Dahlia case, it was kinda based around it, but it followed the story of fictional characters. The movie did have a good cast though, like Scarlett Johansson and Hilary Swank. Also the sexy Rose McGowan makes a small appearance.

1 star A waste of time and money
The Black Dahlia is a film that is not even about what it's suppose to be about so don't let the title fool you.The film is really about these two fighters turned cops who become friends,but one of them goes insane and loses his girlfriend.The film moves at such a rapid pace so you don't even know what's going on and the Black Dahlia's murder is something that just happens and it's overshadowed by the boring romance between Hartnett and Johansson.The performances by Johansson,Eckhart,Swank,and Hartnett are good,but the characters and their backgrounds are so overdone.Bottom Line:keep your distance from the Black Dahlia because it's this year's biggest stink-bomb.

Directed by Paul McGuigan, LUCKY NUMBER SLEVIN is a mistaken identity thriller starring Josh Hartnett as a guy who ends up in the wrong place at the wrong time. With boldly colored sets covered in graphic wallpaper, the film has an almost comicbook-like feel, the emphasis being on visual entertainment rather than believability. When Slevin (Hartnett) shows up at his friend Nick's apartment in Manhattan, Nick is nowhere to be found. After meeting Nick's sharp and flirty neighbor, Lindsey (Lucy Liu), Slevin is kidnapped by two thugs and taken to meet the Boss (Morgan Freeman). Explaining that he is not Nick gets him nowhere, as the Boss and his arch rival, the Rabbi (Ben Kingsley), both pull Slevin (a wiseguy who spends much of the film in a lavender towel) deeper and deeper into a complicated underworld of murder and revenge. The clever dialogue and romance that grows between Hartnett and Liu gives the film a lighthearted charm. Even when orchestrating cold-blooded murder, the film's lead villains never seem too threatening. This is due in large part to the strong tongue-in-cheek performances of Bruce Willis, Ben Kingsley, and Morgan Freeman.
