Along with Styx and REO Speedwagon, Journey ruled the charts and radio airwaves in the early '80s. And like the aforementioned bands, Journey began in the '70s, so obviously the compilers of its 1988 GREATEST HITS release had a lot of material to choose from.
Journey's sound was a merger of hard rock, compliments of guitarist Neal Schon, and the melodic pop/ballads of singer Steve Perry. This resulted in such classic rock radio staples as "Any Way You Want It," "Separate Ways," "Open Arms," "Don't Stop Believin'," "Wheel in the Sky," and "Who's Crying Now," all included here.

Orange County's Nitro Records is perhaps the region's premier punk label, featuring a bunch of well-known middle-aged bands on its roster as well as a few newer ones. This enjoyable sampler has one or two songs from every band on the label, as well as a couple of unreleased tracks. The impressive lineup includes veteran acts like T.S.O.L., who offer up the very fine "Wasted" and an unreleased track, "Sold," which is easily one of the best tunes the band has written since they re-formed with their original members. James' voice is in good shape throughout. Furthermore, some James completists might be enticed by the addition of two early-'80s studio bonus tracks: the 1980 Top 20 hit "Three Times in Love" and the much smaller 1981 hit "You're So Easy to Love." ~ Richie Unterberger
It is virtually never a good sign when an album by a well-known performer with the words "greatest hits" and "live" in the title bears absolutely no date anywhere in the liner notes or credits indicating when it was recorded. And it's not a good sign here on Tommy James & the Shondells' All Time Greatest Hits: Live at the Bitter End. It's safe to assume when a date isn't listed that something is being hidden that would discourage potential customers, probably because the recording dates are from much later than when the original hits were recorded. It's also safe to assume that this gig probably didn't take place too long before the disc's 2002 release date.
