The Monks were an obscure band of U.S. servicemen living in Germany in the 1960s who made some of the out-est experimental rock music of the era, playing out the personas of monks in cowls and tonsures. Though their records didn't sell many copies at the time, they wielded an insidious and slow-moving influence on bands like the Fall and Suicide. Rarely do tribute albums enjoy the success rate of this expansive, creative collection of interpretations of Monks songs, as done by the above-mentioned acts as well as Alec Empire, Silver Apples, Barbara Manning, the Raincoats, and a host of others.
Tribute to the Monks. This is an amazing collection of bands paying tribute to the legendary Monks (Their first album, Black Monk Time, is as relevant now as it was 40 years ago!). The line-up is very enticing, and features several ''unknown'' bands like Mense Reents, Cycle, 27/11, Gudrun Gut, Fehlfarben as well as unlikely ones like Mouse On Mars. Other more known acts include Silver Apples/Alan Vega, The Raincoats, The 5.6.7.8's, The Fall, Alexander Hacke (Einsturzende Neubauten), Alec Empire ft. Gary Burger, Psychic TV and more. 29 tracks in all!! Enjoy! Play Loud Productions. 2006. When the Silver Apples were formed in the mid-60's, Simeon Coxe and Danny Taylor had no way of knowing that they were forging the prototype of experimental electronic music. Connecting over a dozen oscillators, Coxe created a homemade synthesizer which produced a world of futuristic bleeps, sweeps, distortions, and repetitious basslines. With the addition of Taylor's drums, they sounded like The Velvet Underground fronted by Nikola Tesla. In 1968 they released their eponymous album. Where their sound wasn't met simply with perplexity, ...
