Mike Doughty first gained attention as leader of the incomparably quirky New York quartet Soul Coughing, who scored a couple of unlikely modern-rock hits in the mid-to-late 1990s. Soul Coughing earned critical acclaim and a hearty cult following for its blend of Doughty's anti-folk poetry (often highly abstract and heavy on beat repetition) with unique and unquestionably catchy concoctions of jazz, funk, and electronica.

The fact that Jim Mills plays banjo in Ricky Skaggs' Kentucky Thunder is a ringing endorsement that the man knows his stuff. Hide Head Blues, then, gives Mills a chance to step into the spotlight and show bluegrass fans what he's got. The album moves between instrumental and vocal (mostly by guests) tracks, with fancy picking from Mills and friends and more radio-friendly cuts by Don Rigsby and other vocalists. While the album's title cut is a Mills original, most of the material is drawn from the classic country music and bluegrass song bag. An instrumental version of Merle Haggard's "I Started Loving You Again" is a real standout, with the lackadaisical pace perfectly suited for some lovely, blues-inspired banjo work. Hide Head Blues returns to Haggard later in the program, with a fine take on "Daddy Frank," featuring Paul Brewster on vocals. The most unusual and one of the most fun cuts on the album features Mills' vocals and electric (yes, electric) guitar work on Merle Travis' "Guitar Rag." Especially when the songs you write together might be best appreciated after the consumption of mind-altering substances. That’s what retired teacher JJ and son Mark O’Connor do as they lead you down a melodically flower-strewn path with their second EP Universe Narrows. With intelligent lyrics that inspire images of tulip fields and friendly gorillas, this pop/folk album is the perfect accompaniment to the advent of summer and the lazy days that come with it. The soulful chords and tuneful rhythms layer perfectly against JJ’s charming and occasionally doleful voice that speaks to a world of experience. Universe Narrows has a sound reminiscent of Johnny Cash and Tom Petty combined with a melodic gesture that conjures the spirits of the Grateful Dead and perhaps even a little Velvet Underground at times. Gentle strumming and catchy harmony make songs like “Guy” (yes, a song about a gorilla at the zoo) thoroughly endearing and pleasant to listen to, especially while on your porch after a long day of hard work. The vivid existentialism of their lyrics resonates strongly in the song “In My Mind” where O’Connor says “Don't leave me all alone in this too sane reality/a vision still entrances me /like a skewed notion that you can't replace.” The themes of their collaboration span from whimsical observation to weighty rumination, but overall the album leaves you with a consistently positive appreciation for the beauty of the world around you.
