Hart album
$17.05 Don't let the title fool you; after listening to The Only Doo-Wop Collection You'll Ever Need, you'll definitely want more. This is a good starting point for the curious, since all the basics are here in the original hit versions: "The Great Pretender," "Earth Angel," "I Only Have Eyes for You," "Goodnight Sweetheart, Goodnight," and, thrown in for good measure, a few tracks that even vocal group scholars wouldn't mind hearing again by the Marvelows, the Duprees, the Jive Five, and the Earls. While this is an excellent primer, the best representation ...
| | Maxwell Now CD (2001)
Hart CD music
$8.85 "Lifetime" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance.
Rebounding from the slight sophomore lag generated by 1998's EMBRYA, Maxwell's follow-up NOW abandons the neo-soul man's usual M.O. of using a conceptual arc of songs, and instead focuses on individual cuts. Romance remains the main ingredient found in this Brooklyn native's banquet of song, and although he stands firmly in the neo-soul camp of D'Angelo and Erykah, his use of various stylistic nuances once again stamps him as an original item. Twangy country-flavored licks and subtle DJ scratches pop up throughout the lament "Was My Girl," and scratchy rock guitar riffs are sparingly used over the heavy groove of "Temporary Nite." At the centerpiece is a studio version of Kate Bush's "This Woman's Work," a staple of Maxwell's concerts previously showcased on the live 1997 EP UNPLUGGED. Delivered with a crystalline falsetto, delicate strings and subtle pedal steel, it's a daring move worthy of Prince-ly accolades.
Elsewhere, Maxwell easily moves between sly funk (a percolating "Get To Know Ya") and sleek, between-the-sheets posturing (the Isley Brothers-flavored "Changed"). Other highlights include the goosebump-inducing slow jam "For Lovers Only," chugging come-on "Lifetime," and irresistible end-of-album funk workout "Now/At The Party." NOW is a musical outing worthy of silk sheets and champagne.
Personnel includes: Maxwell (vocals); ...

| | Jammin Soul, Vol. 2 CD (2003)
Hart music CDs
$6.19 A two-volume series from Rhino's budget-line Flashback division, Jammin Soul, Vol. 2 serves up a grand total of 20 soul and R&B hits from the early '60s through the early '80s. Since it is so random and not nearly as generous as the average compilation covering the same territory, the series will be most helpful to wedding and party DJs who are in a bind. The first disc of the set features the Average White Band's "Pick Up the Pieces," KC & the Sunshine Band's "Get Down ...

| | Milman-Brignall Enigma Bafflemania CD (2008)
Hart album
$11.39 Three years in the making, Bafflemania, produced by the legendary Jack Endino (Nirvana's With the Lights Out box set), featuring lead singer Alan Milman (responsible for the seminal and highly collectible punk rock classic Stitches in My Head/I Wanna Kill Somebody, reissued on CD here and on vinyl by Munster Records in Spain - "Repeat after me: I need that song" - Laurent Bigot, Ugly Things #23), is unlike anything else being unleashed on the scene today. The other central figure is newcomer Matt Brignall, who in addition to being Al's songwriting partner on an array of new eclectic stunners, plays sitar, banjo, Mellotron, tone generator, electric and acoustic guitars, and anything in the room. Bafflemania is an intoxicating mixture, incorporating psychedelia, such as How's Your Fuzzy Box, ragabilly, a new blend of Indian and C&W, on Any Further Attempt To Contact Me!, with hints of modern jazz, a collision of garage rock & Brubeck, in Fragments, the deconstructionist epic, Mighty Mouth, and many other innovative departures, delivered with a large dose of humor. BAFFLEMANIA is a very elaborate, tongue planted firmly in cheek, production. It is thinking person's entertainment, both startling and fun to listen to. Advance retail ...
