Although Ruby Braff and Dave McKenna played together on several occasions during their long careers, these two sessions best represent their collective legacy for a number of reasons. It must be said that their recorded collaborations were not as abundant as one might expect. Their two initial sessions together were as sidemen for other musicians: a 1955 date as part of the Benny Goodman septet, and a February 1956 session backing singer Milli Vernon's recording debut. These dates were followed by the two incredible sessions included here. After that, the only known recordings of the Hackett-McKenna partnership are a 1961 live recording at Eddie Condon's with Bobby Hackett and Peanuts Hucko, and two 1991-93 double albums with a band including tenor saxophonist Scott Hamilton. The sessions featured on this edition are, thus, their only true small group quartet/quintet) recordings and the only instrumental sessions they made at the peak of their careers, in which both musicians can be considered, in a way, session leaders. Complete Original Quartet/Quintet Sessions album
$11.79 STANLEY DANCE SESSIONS is a remastered, 10-track release by jazz saxophone player Budd Johnson, featuring the tracks "Foggy Nights," "Used Blues," and "Summertime."
Saxophonist Budd Johnson made a series of excellent recordings for producer Stanley Dance in February 1958 and June 1967. The 1958 dates (septet and quintet) featured trumpeter Charlie Shavers; the septet included trombonist Vic Dickenson and Al Sears, who blew the baritone sax instead of his customary tenor. Pianists were Ray Bryant and Bert Keyes, who also played organ. The bassist in 1958 was Joe Benjamin; the drummer was Kansas City Jo Jones. The music is outstanding. "Destination Blues" is particularly strong, with all of the horns in fine fettle. The collective energy, especially what boils up out of the quintet on "Blues by Five" is spectacular, with ...

| | Gil Evans Complete Pacific Jazz Sessions CD (2006)
Complete Original Quartet/Quintet Sessions album
$10.15 The second of these albums, Great Jazz Standards, featured a similar band with some notable differences. For one, the inclusion of soprano saxophonist Steve Lacy as a soloist and rhythm sections that included either Dennis Charles or Elvin Jones on drums, Curtis Fuller on trombone, and Budd Johnson on tenor for about half the set. The finer moments here include "Ballad of the Sad Young Men," (a newish tune at the time with a fine piano solo by Evans) John Lewis' "Django," with a truly brilliant and understated solo by Lacy, who also does a commendable job on "Straight No Chaser." Johnson wails on Gil Evans' "La Nevada (Theme)." Evans arrangement of Clifford Brown's "Joy Spring" is also a killer, with his and guitarist Ray Crawford's solos. The Complete Pacific Jazz Recordings is a fine collection issued by Blue Note, which, as part of the Connoisseur Series, is limited and will be out of print again soon. Don't wait. ~ Thom Jurek
Gil Evans released two records on World Pacific in 1958 and 1959. They were among his earliest dates as a leader. Gil Evans & Ten was issued by Prestige in 1957, but these dates stand out more. New Bottle, Old Wine was the ...

| | Cecil Payne Scotch And Milk CD (1996)
Complete Original Quartet/Quintet Sessions music CDs
$12.89 When Cecil Payne turned 70 in 1992, the baritone saxophonist was showing no signs of slowing down. Payne was 73 when he recorded Scotch and Milk, a fine hard bop date employing trumpeter Marcus Belgrave, tenor saxmen Lin Halliday and Eric Alexander, pianist Harold Mabern, bassist John Ore, and drummer Joe Farnsworth. Payne's chops are in top shape on this 1996 date, and the veteran saxman plays with a lot of passion on such exuberant originals as "Wilhemenia" (a Sonny Rollins-type jazz/calypso number), "Que Pasaning," and "Cit Sac" (which finds Payne switching to the ...
