| | Faithless No Roots CD - Import Faithless Discography of CDs
On the strength of the lead single "Mass Destruction" alone (the album features two mixes of the song, as well as its video), NO ROOTS is another powerhouse entry in the Faithless discography. The driving groove, the subdued rap of vocalist Maxi Jazz, and the compelling, politically pointed message of the lyrics make "Mass Destruction" a clear standout track. Fortunately, there is more to NO ROOTS, as producers Rollo and Sister Bliss flesh out the entire record with gorgeous sonic architecture and stylistic flourishes that range from dub to ambient to deep house.
Maxi Jazz and newcomer LSK (who lends his ragga-inflected vocal style to the group) bring a lyrical intelligence to the album. Though there are obvious dance-floor tracks and love songs ("Miss U Less, See U More"), the record has a decidedly message-driven bent. "I Want More - Part 1" rails against materialism, and "Everything Will Be Alright Tomorrow" offers a narrative about economic inequality. The tracks are sequenced to flow into each other seamlessly, thanks to the savvy instincts of Rollo and Sister Bliss. As accomplished as anything the band has done, NO ROOTS is another fine Faithless achievement.
Enhanced pressing of this 2004 album by the Electronic/House/Dance outfit Faithless features two versions of 'Mass Destruction' as bonus tracks: P-Nut & Sister Bliss Mix and Enhanced Video. 16 tracks total. BMG. 2006.

No Roots
$15.24 Functioning as something of a replacement for the 2001 collection Their Greatest Hits: The Record, The Ultimate Bee Gees covers much of the same ground as that double-disc set, albeit in not quite so linear a fashion. The Record marched through its 40 tracks chronologically, opening with the stately baroque Beatlesque pop of the '60s and then winding through the '70s, whereas this opens with the bright, fabulous blast of "You Should Be Dancing" and remains in their late-'70s heyday for a while before fast-forwarding to such latter-day adult contemporary hits as "One." We don't get to "I've Gotta Get a Message to You" and "I Started a Joke" until halfway through the second disc, and this ...
| | Isaac Hayes Shaft (Deluxe Edition) CD (1971) Bonus Track; Remastered; Deluxe Edition
No Roots
$9.58 Despite its codification into our collective pop culture consciousness, Isaac Hayes' "Theme From Shaft" is a highly original composition. It's been remade by Hayes himself for the remade Shaft film, and appropriately kicks off this collection of tunes from the movie by some of R&B's New Jacks.
A diverse selection of artists encompass the collection, from lascivious soul stirrer R. Kelly to the rugged Latin hip-hop of Fulanito, along with many other noteworthy diversions that represent the many flavors of contemporary urban soul. Most of the material focuses on John Shaft's street smarts and bravado, or the film's pimps, hoes, and gangsta imagery. As expected, Southern hip-hop is well represented, with Outkast, Mystikal, and Big Gipp from Goodie Mob contributing. The tracks offer typically gritty observations on street life, over bleak, minor chords and busy percussion. T.I.P. featuring Beanie Sigel offers "2 Glock 9's," one of the soundtrack's most rugged grooves, a minimal, stripped-down drum break that stutters and skids backwards and forwards over a Notorious BIG vocal sample and is easily ...

No Roots
$11.65 Fans of Zap Mama, Sade and/or Soul II Soul will probably flip for this sister duo from Bordeaux, France. Though they tend to get billed as a hip-hop act, their music is much more complex than that: it's smooth like Sade (but much more melodically interesting), bass-heavy like Soul II Soul (but much more lyrically interesting), and "Afropean" like Zap Mama (but much less interesting; sorry ladies). "Demain," the lead-off track on Princesses Nubiennes, is a smooth jazz groove that is more tasty than nourishing, but there's a fair amount of both textural and lyrical complexity to "Makeda." "Tabou" is actually an adapted (and, frankly, much improved) version of Sade's "Sweetest Taboo" that features some excellent French rapping. "Embrasse-Moi" is both excruciatingly sexy and highly rhythmically sophisticated. Sure, they have a mildly distressing tendency to layer everything with an ultra-smooth surface sheen, but it's forgivable; chances are good that they'll rough things ...
| | Cairo Orchestra A Tribute to OM Kalsoum CD (2001)
No Roots
$12.19 This is an oddity, but one I cannot live without. For the uninitiated, Om Kalsoum was the it voice in Arabic music for the better part of the last half of the 20th century. She was revered by musicians of every stripe and had reportedly performed on not only the world's stages, but also on at least 750 film soundtracks as a singer and composer. Knowing full well that using a vocalist to fill in for her on a tribute record would be pointlessly inadequate, a host of the finest musicians from the region got together under the direction of Movses Panossian and recorded nine of her best-known selections instrumentally. This features an orchestra of 16 musicians, including a five-piece violin section that features no less a maestro than Aziz George and kawal player Abdalla Hlmi. The set opens with the hauntingly beautiful "Hayyarti Albi," moving through modes and droning scales with languorous beauty and mournful emotion. This is a bittersweet piece that has at its heart grief, longing, and the determination to continue despite it all. Also included is the dance "Ina Omri," a wedding dance with a ...
