Winter Garden Soundtrack album
$6.09 The title Heavy Metal is somewhat misleading. Sure, this terrific soundtrack from the 1981 animated cult favorite features heavy metal and hard rock numbers. But the title refers to National Lampoon's sci-fi/fantasy magazine on which the film is based. Musically, Heavy Metal offers more than the title suggests, and the songs fit perfectly with their respective film segments. Heavy Metal was originally a double album, but at 62 minutes it fits just fine on one CD. Sixteen songs are contributed by Black Sabbath, Blue Oyster Cult, Cheap Trick, Devo, Donald Fagen, Don Felder, Grand Funk Railroad, Sammy Hagar, Journey, Nazareth, Stevie Nicks, Riggs, and Trust; Cheap Trick, Felder, and Riggs each provide two. Most songs are exclusive to this soundtrack. The best-known song here is Journey's ballad "Open Arms." Blue Oyster Cult's darkly menacing "Veteran of the Psychic Wars" is a haunting gem. Devo's quirky, new wave interpretation of the Allen Toussaint-penned "Working in the Coal Mine" was a minor hit. Black Sabbath's blistering "The Mob Rules" is a fine example of the underrated Ronnie James Dio era. Felder's "Heavy Metal (Takin' a Ride)" and "All of You" are well-crafted, ...

$9.19 The soundtrack to THE WEDDING SINGER is a journey back to the days of skinny ties and voluminous hair. The roster consists of slower, more somber hits, of which there was no shortage among the bands of the English new wave. From the Smiths' hypnotic classic "How Soon Is Now?" to the fatalistic throb of New Order's "Blue Monday," THE WEDDING SINGER consciously avoids the light-hearted fluff for which ...

$11.99 WHEN ACTORS SING could be the title of a surreal reality-based TV show; instead it often turns out to be an all too real phenomenon. Luckily, the soundtrack for the Bruce Paltrow-directed movie comedy about the world of karaoke turns out to be a highly listenable collection of real-life musicians and actors picking up microphones and letting it all hang out vocally. Among the non-singers of the batch who deserve special mention is Paltrow's daughter Gwyneth. Playing the role of daughter to con artist Huey Lewis, her soulful ...
| | Dr Zhivago Dr. Zhivago CD (1995) Original Soundtrack
Winter Garden Soundtrack CD music
$9.65 Maurice Jarre wrote the central musical motif of his score for Doctor Zhivago, "Lara's Theme," in a few minutes in a hotel, amid a frantic five-week rush to score the 197-minute movie. That theme made the Doctor Zhivago soundtrack album one of the biggest selling soundtrack of the 1960s, a considerable feat when one reckons in the competition from A Hard Day's Night, Never on Sunday, A Man and a Woman, Exodus, and 2001: A Space Odyssey. The rest of Jarre's score is more in the realm of lushly textured Russian-themed mood music, filled with dark male choruses, folk and folk-like themes, and dense orchestrations, sort of faux-Tchaikovsky. The stereo separation is used to good ...

Winter Garden Soundtrack CD music
$16.99 Galaxy Records was the black music division of the San Francisco-based Fantasy label, but while the parent company enjoyed hit after hit with flagship act Creedence Clearwater Revival, Galaxy languished in commercial limbo -- equally influenced by A&R chief Ray Shanklin's predilection for traditional blues and the psychedelia bubbling up from the Haight-Ashbury scene, Galaxy's homegrown soul was probably just too expansive and eccentric for the charts, but decades after the fact the label's output sounds amazing. Charting Galaxy's output from 1967 to 1972, Get Your Lie Straight assembles 22 slabs of Technicolor funk in the ...
