| | Dio Holy Diver CD (1983)
Parallel Worlds CD music
$7.29 Despite recording two hit studio albums with Black Sabbath (1980's HEAVEN AND HELL and 1981's THE MOB RULES) and playing throughout the world to huge crowds, Ronnie James Dio left the band in 1982-the year of his final release with Sabbath, the in-concert LIVE EVIL. As soon as the announcement of his departure was made official, Dio began to put together his first solo project. Joining him were former Rainbow bandmate Jimmy Bain on bass, former Sabbath bandmate Vinny Appice on drums, ex-Sweet Savage guitar hero Vivian Campbell, and newcomer Claude Schnell on keyboards.
HOLY DIVER, Dio's band debut, was issued in 1983. The album quickly became a favorite among headbangers worldwide and eventually earned the ...

Parallel Worlds music CDs
$12.79 This album is a sort of summit conference of underground heavy music. Guitarists and vocalists Scott "Wino" Weinrich (the Obsessed, Saint Vitus, Spirit Caravan, the Hidden Hand) and Scott Kelly of Neurosis are grizzled veterans whose hoarse, guttural shouts and instantly recognizable, distorted guitar tones carry the authority of years of hard touring and introspective yet still crushing rock, while bassist Al Cisneros (Sleep, Om) and Melvins drummer Dale Crover shake the earth with their gigantic rhythms. The five tracks were laid down in three days, with some minor overdubs done shortly afterward, and they have the organic feel of jams transformed into cohesive songs through application of the group mind. Wino's usual biker-rock riffage is frequently replaced by a more psychedelic, drifting sound with long sustained notes floating over Cisneros's trance-inducing basslines (Ted Nugent's "Stranglehold" seems like a bigger influence than the Black Sabbath ...

| | Tool Lateralus CD (2001)
Parallel Worlds album
$10.19 "Schism" won the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance.
Approaching Tool's LATERALUS with a casual ear would be a careless endeavor, to say the least. The sheer magnitude of the musical and emotional textures is as heady as it is primal. Standing out as one of the defining traits of the Tool sound is Justin Chancellor's hauntingly melodic bass playing, which often launches into a role reversal with the mountainous guitar work of Adam Jones. The best examples of said phenomenon are found in "The Grudge" and "Reflection." Drummer Danny Carey slips easily into the pocket, fearlessly tackling odd time signatures and tasty percussion like few contemporary metal percussionists (best evidenced in "The Patient.") Lyrically, LATERALUS crawls through the cerebral catacombs of vocalist ...
| | Kiss Destroyer CD (1976) Remastered
Parallel Worlds CD music
$7.75 Digitally remastered by Joseph M. Palmaccio at Sterling Sound, New York, New York.
Before DESTROYER, Kiss' studio albums were only moderate sellers. But the band's concerts were selling out regularly, and 1975's ALIVE! album had gone gold, putting Kiss on the pop map. DESTROYER, on which they teamed with Alice Cooper producer Bob Ezrin, was the breakthrough that finally got Kiss' grandiose rock ideas down on record.
DESTROYER is a chancy, ambitious album. It opens with a radio announcer reporting a teen's death in a car crash, followed by a snippet of "Rock And Roll All Nite" (which had appeared on 1975's DRESSED TO KILL); then the band launches into "Detroit Rock City," an homage to the first city to make them stars. "Great Expectations" features ornate orchestration, a heavenly chorus and a guitar tone that exposes the band's glam-rock ambitions. DESTROYER also includes ...

| | Machine Head Through The Ashes Of Empires CD (2003) Bonus Tracks
Parallel Worlds album
$15.65 Initial pressings of THROUGH THE ASHES OF EMPIRES include a bonus disc.
On THROUGH THE ASHES OF EMPIRES, Machine Head delivers another potent dose of the group's signature blend of late-1980s thrash and Pantera-inspired alt-metal. This time around, though, the band takes frequent musical interludes from the sonic onslaught--a tinkling toy piano provides "Left Unfinished" with a nicely eerie, horror-film intro, while "Wipe Away the Tears" features a Black Flag-style spoken rant. In a few places, the ordinarily pummeling juggernaut that is Machine Head even gets downright melodic--"Shades of Night," for example, features vocal harmonies would fit right in on an Incubus disc. Longtime fans need ...
| | Phonograhic Yearbook: 1907 - Dear Old Golden Rule Days CD (2003)
Parallel Worlds CD music
$14.29 This is the best volume to date issued in Archeophone's Phonographic Yearbook series. Ironically, Volume One of Archeophone's 1890s series was stated as focusing on the "coon song" phenomenon, but there are better ones included here, in better recordings. There is also at least one "rube" sketch, "Three Rubes Seeing New York," performed by the Peerless trio, a snappy Bert Williams tune, "He's a Cousin of Mine," and even the United States Marine Band dishing up a serving of Scott Joplin's "Maple Leaf Rag." Persons who desire political correctness in their music should definitely avoid this disc -- even some fairly open-minded listeners may find it a challenge contending with May Irwin's "The Bully." As one well-known critic remarked after hearing the number, "gosh, what a mouth on that broad."
The sound is generally very good on this volume, and should be tolerable to most listeners whether or not they are accustomed to the sound of old recordings. ~ Uncle Dave Lewis

Parallel Worlds songs
$21.05 Placebo was an intriguing combination of a Swede, a Swiss, and an American, who formed in Luxembourg and ended up sounding very British, in a post-punk sort of way. Signed for a reputed large advance (partly owing to their marketable, androgynous singer, Brian Molko), the quality of their songwriting was demonstrated on their excellent debut. "Nancy Boy," a surprising hit single, is in fact one of the lesser tracks on the album, with much more depth to be found in songs like "Bionic," "Come Home," and "I Know," the latter coming complete with didgeridoo. This tenth anniversary reissue includes five additional tracks and a bonus DVD, containing rare footage of seven live appearances, as well as promotional videos.
