As on so many obscure long-players of the late '60s, there's a salad of styles on Kangaroo's sole, self-titled album, running the gamut from redneck country-rock ("Frog Giggin'," "Happy Man") and sunshine pop-spotted psychedelia ("Such a Long, Long Time") to strident folk-rock ("Daydream Stallion") and avowedly sub-Beatlesque sounds ("Happy Man," "Make Some Room in Your Life"). There are also insertions of backwards guitars, San Francisco-type acid rock riffing, soul vocal posturing, descendants-of-Mamas & the Papas male-female backup harmonies, and a monologue about killing frogs and having sex at the same time. Still, there are good things about the record, particularly the vibrato folk-rock vocals of Barbara Keith. They're reminiscent to varying degrees of Melanie, Judy Collins, and Buffy Sainte-Marie, though her own personality comes through, as showcased to best effect on the record's highlight, the strident yet haunting folk-rock-psych outing "Daydream Stallion." Fans of Keith should be aware both that this record is not similar to the ones she would subsequently make during her long career, and that her contributions are usually confined to backup harmonies. But when she took the lead vocal -- as she did on "Daydream Stallion," the slightly less impressive "The Only Thing I Had," and her wordless scatting on the opening jazzy section of "I Never Tell Me Twice" -- Kangaroo showed some glimmers of becoming something special. ~ Richie Unterberger

There are few other albums of the late '60s besides Kangaroo's sole, self-titled affair on which so much talent is evident, but so little coheres into satisfying results. Part of the problem is that, as on so many obscure long-players of the age, there's such a salad of non-complementary styles, running the gamut from redneck country-rock ("Frog Giggin'," "Happy Man") and sunshine pop-spotted psychedelia ("Such a Long, Long Time") to strident folk-rock ("Daydream Stallion") and avowedly sub-Beatlesque sounds ("Happy Man," "Make Some Room in Your Life"). There are also gratuitous insertions of backwards guitars, San Francisco-type acid rock riffing, soul vocal posturing, descendants-of-Mamas & the Papas male-female backup harmonies, and a silly monologue about killing frogs and having sex at the same time. The biggest flaw, however, is the substandard songwriting, which has sky-high ambitions but confused construction and execution. That's not to say there aren't good things about the record, particularly the vibrato folk-rock vocals of Barbara Keith. They're reminiscent to varying degrees of Melanie, Judy Collins, and Buffy Sainte-Marie, though her own personality comes through, as showcased to best effect on the record's highlight, the strident yet haunting folk-rock-psych outing "Daydream Stallion." Unfortunately, that's the only Keith-penned song on the album, which would have been far better had she written and sung lead on more of the material -- or, to be cruel, written and sung lead on most or all of it. The other three bandmembers not only come up with nothing to match "Daydream Stallion" -- their styles don't even jell well with one another, N.D. Smart II's mediocre countrified numbers sticking out like a sore thumb in the midst of this crossfire of late-'60s rock stews. Fans of Barbara Keith should be aware both that this record is not similar to the ones she would subsequently make during her long career, and that her contributions are usually confined to backup harmonies. It's only when she took the lead vocal -- as she did on "Daydream Stallion," the slightly less impressive "The Only Thing I Had," and her wordless scatting on the opening jazzy section of "I Never Tell Me Tw

This quirky collection of country - tinged pop-psych first appeared in 1968, and features the talents of singer Barbara Keith (whose songs have been covered by Barbara Streisand, Delaney & Bonnie, Lowell George and others), John Hall (of 70s hitmakers Orleans) and ND Smart (a member of Mountain

This newly remastered 2003 deluxe edition contains bonus tracks. Originally released on RCA Victor (3766). Includes liner notes by Jeff Tamarkin and Bill Thompson. From the opening, hard-edged chords of "She Has Funny Cars," it's apparent that SURREALISTIC PILLOW, Jefferson Airplane's sophomore effort, is a far more spiky beast than the band's debut. It became not only San Francisco's soundtrack to the Summer ...

At His Very Best
Leo Sayer At His Very Best CD  (2006) (Import)

Kangaroo CD music
CD $28.89  Definitive Album
If there ever were a good reason for updating an artist's greatest-hits compilation, Leo Sayer's At His Very Best was it. After all, the most uncool of 1970s icons had long vacated the charts, with most of his hits concentrated into a period 1974-1982, and then even he had made way for the new romantics, the jazz-funk soul boys, and the androgynous stars of the early '80s. The man with the highest falsetto voice in the charts was no longer wanted, and all he had to offer in the mid-'80s was a series of insipid cover versions like "Till You Come Back to Me" and "Unchained Melody" (yes, yet another version). He'd also released several compilations of the hits, first in 1979 when he spent three weeks at number one with The Very Best of Leo Sayer, and then during the CD era he released All the Best and The Definitive Hits Collection. Then, out of nowhere, a British DJ and producer by the name of Meck (real name Craig Dimech) remixed one of Sayer's lesser hits, "Thunder in My Heart," and took it all the way to number one in the singles chart in February 2006. Suddenly, Leo Sayer was cool again, appearing on Celebrity Big Brother -- and the generation who had forgotten the curly-haired lovable singer, apart from oldie play of his biggest hits on radio, surprisingly found him in the limelight again. ...
