Bluesman Coco Montoya's sixth album finds the gravel-voiced performer accompanied by Paul Barrere and other members of Little Feat, as well as by his regular band, on a roster of songs that display his trademark stinging, Albert Collins-influenced guitar style to its best advantage. Highlights include the irresistible, rocking "Love Gotcha," the swinging "It Takes Time," and the atmospheric after-hours blues of "It's My Own Tears."

Dirty Linen (p.92) - "Coco Montoya turns the temperature to sizzling with his barbed-wire-esque guitar picking and don't-mess-with-me vocals." Living Blues (p.44) - "All 11 songs are rockers, whether they are slow burning blues, soulful R&B, or Louisiana swamp blues..." Coco Montoya Dirty Deal Songs | 1. | Last Dirty Deal |

| | Derek Trucks Songlines CD (2006)
Dirty Deal
$11.39 This is, perhaps, the one. Derek Trucks has been on an aesthetic quest for something since he began his own recording career in 1997 -- apart from his membership in the Allman Brothers Band. Each record has gone further into establishing Trucks not only as a slide guitar wizard (that happened when he was still in his teens), but also as a serious songwriter, fine arranger, and bandleader. The Derek Trucks Band, as evidenced by the release of 2003's Soul Serenade, is a unit -- a band -- whose core has been together for eight years. They create an atmosphere, a sound, a musical sense of place and community. On Live at the Georgia Theater (available only on the Internet), the DTB performed with new vocalist Mike Mattison, who gave them something they needed: a strong, utilitarian presence that could ...
| | Walter Trout Full Circle CD (2006)
Dirty Deal
$13.15 In his mid-fifties at the time of this album's release in 2006, Walter Trout seemed to be in a reflective mood. His 2005 album was a collection of older, previously unreleased tracks from various stages in his extensive career. This follow-up finds him reconnecting with many artists he has worked with, laying down newly recorded originals. In fact, this is Trout's first studio recorded disc of fresh material since 2001's Go the Distance. As the Full Circle title implies, the guitarist rounds up some musicians/friends he has played with for a spontaneous set of performances. The liner notes explain that some of these tracks were unrehearsed first takes, and the heightened energy level throughout reflects that. Also impressive is that Trout was eye-to-eye with each artist, as opposed to projects where guests lay down solos at various ...

| | Big Joe Williams I Got Wild CD (2003)
Dirty Deal
$12.89 I Got Wild is an appropriate title for these Big Joe Williams sessions. While not a consummate musician, Williams made due with a nine-string guitar he built from an old six-string that was falling apart. His lyrics are heartfelt, but sometimes brutal. Williams was known to wander, disappearing for long periods of time, with a penchant for getting into trouble usually fueled by alcohol. These ...
