Personnel: Alexandre Desplat (flute, piano, keyboards, percussion); Vincent Segal (electric cello); John Timperley (recorder); Lang Lang (piano); Philippe Macé, Joël Grare, Jeff Boudreaux (percussion). Audio Mixer: John Timperley. Recording information: The Dvorak Hall, Prague, Czech Republic. Alexandre Desplat's score for director John Curran's film adaptation of the W. Somerset Maugham novel The Painted Veil, about a British couple who travel to China in the 1920s, is not specifically Oriental in tone. But it does have a sense of reserve and a contemplative feel much of the time. The dominant soloist is young Chinese classical pianist Lang Lang, although Vincent Segal's electric cello is also given generous solo space. Desplat provides a lovely "River Waltz," played both orchestrally and as a piano piece by Lang. "The Water Wheel" is a percussion-heavy cue with Desplat himself contributing. (He also plays flutes, piano, and keyboards himself on the soundtrack.) "Cholera," a cue coming toward the film's climax, has the repetitive rhythm of a Philip Glass piece, but that's as assertive as Desplat gets in a score that manages to maintain a mood simultaneously restrained and ominous. ~ William Ruhlmann The Painted Veil (Original Soundtrack) Music The Painted Veil (Original Soundtrack) Music Review Purchase Music From The Painted Veil (Original ) CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Stargate CD (2006) Remastered

Personnel: Paul Janes (piano). Recording information: Studio 7, New Broadcasting House, Manchester, England (09/24/2002/09/25/2002). This recording was first reported about on the Internet in 2002, and finally showed up in the waning weeks of 2003. Sir Arnold Bax (1883-1953) came to film music relatively late, at age 59, and produced two soundtracks during the final 11 years of his life. Though he had intended to retire at the outset of the 1940s, Bax found new stimulus from a request from Muir Mathieson, the conductor and movie music director, to write the score for the patriotic documentary short Malta, GC, which told of the island's resistance to Axis air attacks during the first three years of World War II. Bax had spent most of his life writing for the concert hall and found the project not to his liking -- it was music generated solely by an outside source of inspiration, and though in the end he turned in a much-loved score, he never took to film-related work in the manner of his decade-older contemporary Ralph Vaughan Williams (who, in his seventies, generated a whole symphony -- his seventh -- inspired by the subject behind a film assignment). In 1947, Bax was again engaged to do a soundtrack, this time for David Lean's Oliver Twist -- this proved to be his magnum opus in the genre, an hour's worth of finely crafted, lively, clever, and almost all memorable music. Ironically, because of a two-year delay in releasing the movie in America and heavy cuts made in the movie when it did finally open (all because of Alec Guinness' portrayal of Fagin), audiences in the United States didn't get to hear Bax's music (or see the movie) intact until ...

$18.99 PROGRAM NOTESSymphony No. 1 is dedicated to my son, Israel. It was Israel who suggested that my symphony be about "play" and "love." I was both appreciative and awestruck by this simple yet profound suggestion particularly since Israel is autistic and has severe difficulty with language. The middle movements of my symphony are indeed entitled "Play" and "Love" and the two outer movements serve to border the inner movements and to deal with the emotional context surrounding a special needs child. The first movement perhaps deals with my emotions arising from the enigma of it all, and the final movement is perhaps aimed more at Israel and his struggle and his ability to achieve joy and success against overwhelming odds. Symphony No. 2 ("Parmly's Dream") is a series of tableaus from the life of Parmly Billings. Parmly was the eldest son of Frederick and Julia Billings. Frederick Billings was the president of the Northern Pacific Railroad and is the namesake of Billings, Montana. Frederick and the Billings family lived in Woodstock, Vermont. Parmly lived in Billings, Montana for approximately four years in the mid-1880's. He died in Chicago on his way home, aged 25.As site specific as that sounds (i.e. only folks in Billings Montana would be interested in this piece), the Second Symphony actually has more universality than one would expect. What we have here is a simple tale of father and son and of a family tragedy. There is something in the telling that seems to affect everyone. I didn't realize this ...
