| | Grace Jones Hurricane CD (2008)
Stand Up-Wise Up album
$12.79 After 19 years, Grace Jones finally releases a new studio album, and it's a weird one, nostalgic and timeless in equal measure. Her collaborators (including Brian Eno, Tricky, Wendy & Lisa, Sly & Robbie, Tony Allen, and others) set up instrumental backdrops that explicitly recall not only her own early-'80s albums, but also those albums' influence on the later work of Massive Attack, Tricky, et al. At the same time, Jones' old lyrical persona -- the androgynous cyber-demon who uses scorn as an erotic weapon -- has been largely abandoned; only on "Corporate Cannibal" does that version of her reappear, atop a track that sounds inspired by Massive Attack's "Inertia Creeps." Instead, we get a nostalgic, autobiographical Grace Jones, which is interesting and pretty much totally unexpected. The songs "William's Blood" and "I'm Crying (Mother's Tears)" find the now 60-year-old Jones looking back on her childhood in Jamaica, recalling her mother singing in church and comforting her as a nightmare-stricken little girl. Her voice changes on these songs; her accent grows thicker, abandoning the female-Terminator delivery of classic tracks like "Nightclubbing" and "Pull Up to the Bumper" in favor of a voice that's ...
| | Jimmy Cliff Anthology CDs (2003) Digipak
Stand Up-Wise Up CD music
$24.79 Recorded between 1962 & 1993. Includes liner notes by Dave Thompson.
Jimmy Cliff has always occupied an odd position in reggae music, first of all because he predates it significantly, but also because for much of his career he merged his musical interests with international pop considerations to the extent that he managed to record frequently for such major labels as Warner, EMI, Universal, and Sony. Although his commercial success was spotty, it was recurrent; he first hit the charts internationally in 1969 and was still scoring occasionally in the mid-'90s. His label hopping had made it practically impossible to assemble a thorough compilation of his work until the release of Anthology. Universal's Hip-O reissue subsidiary specializes in putting together anthologies that span record labels, and the compilers had quite a task ...

| | Inheritance Southwest CD (1996)
Stand Up-Wise Up songs
$16.45 The Inheritance is the brainchild of singer/songwriter Ken Jayis, who packed up his guitar and moved to Los Angeles from his native Mississippi, teamed up with singer/songwriter/producer Kirkman Ridd, and released three albums on Upside Out Records. The band toured extensively throughout the U.S. and Canada, garnering coast-to-coast recognition and critical acclaim. About The Inheritance's albums, the press wrote:"With a blend of Southern bravado and mountain honesty [The Inheritance] make music that's direct and heartfelt." -- The Album Network --"Guitars wail with the urgency of wheels rolling on a clock that's ticking ever closer to the point of no turning back... [The Inheritance] paint aural landscapes with just the tension or blending of their vocals." -- Pasadena Weekly --"... a myriad of moods, from bare bones rockabilly to sweeping, mesmeric textures... The Inheritance will win you over with their remarkable harmonies and studied guitar talents." -- Entertainment Today L.A. --"... lots of floating melodies and yearning choruses... well executed and lovingly crafted." -- Private Eye Weekly --"... best listened to while driving through the Arizona desert with the top down and the stereo cranked high... Fans of the Eagles, Poco, and the Jayhawks take note." -- Creative Loafing --Some of The Inheritance's many tour stops included: The Bluebird Cafe in Nashville, TN, La Zona Rosa in Austin, TX, Jack's Sugar Shack in Hollywood, CA, and the North By Northeast Music Festival in Toronto, Canada. The band performed live on many radio and television ...
