Rue Du Salbert album
$11.18 With Adam Lambert, American Idol finally got a finalist who was completely, utterly contemporary, aware of what's hip in music and culture and aware of how music is made and consumed in 2009, never seeming to try to follow fads or set trends, just embodying the time. Mercifully, he came in second to Kris Allen, for if he came in first he may have had to tame his self-styled glamazon ways. A second place finish allowed Lambert to come out of the closet and indulge in his penchant for theater on his debut, For Your Entertainment -- which isn't quite the same thing as camp, for if Adam Lambert is anything, he's earnest about his dress-up, never winking at the audience because he doesn't think there's much funny about his glitter and mascara: ...

| | Best Of Gregory Isaacs, Vol. 1 CD (1978)
Rue Du Salbert songs
$9.69 Gregory Isaacs had been haunting the Kingston studios since 1968, but it wasn't until 1973 that the singer notched up a hit, and another year before he finally topped the chart. That first number one, "Love Is Overdue," was produced by Alvin Ranglin, one of a slew of sensational songs Isaacs cut for the former Maytone in the mid-'70s. Like many singers turned producers, Ranglin had a fabulous ear for melody, and he made it the centerpiece of all his productions. Even during this period, when adamant rhythms were de rigueur, Ranglin softened their effect by lacing arrangements with warm, cheery brass alongside glowing organ and sparkling piano, courtesy of Winston Wright and Gladstone "Gladdy" Anderson, respectively. Recorded at Channel One studio, these types of glorious riddims were the backbone of The Best of Gregory Isaacs, the singer's third album. Contrary to its suggestive title, this was not a compilation of hits at all, at least not yet. A couple of numbers had already seen success as singles, including "Look Before You Leap" and "My Number One," but the rest of the record was all new. Many of these songs, however, would swiftly become Isaacs' standards, including the seductive "Special Guest," the aching "Tear Drops" (with exquisite backing from the Tamlins, who offered up harmonies across the set), the cultural classic "No Speech," and his emotive cover of Hortense Ellis' "Willow Tree." Equally worthy of note are a soulful cover of the Ellis siblings' "Breaking Up" and the incredibly haunting "Cool You." Then again, every song on this set is a standout. So, when is a best-of set without a host of hits still a best-of set? The answer is simple: when -- like this best-of -- it showcases the artist at his very best. ~ Jo-Ann Greene
Jamaican producers seemed determined to tempt fate by titling albums in particularly misleading fashion. The most infamous, of course, was the Wailers' 1971 debut album, which like this Gregory Isaacs set was also brashly entitled Best Of. Neither quite lived up to its claims, nor were they even compilations -- both featured mostly new material with a few recent singles thrown in for good measure. In Isaacs' case, there were a mere two hits to be found within -- "Look Before You Leap" and the mighty "My Number One" -- and everything else was new. But then everything ...
| | Gregg Karukas Nightshift CD (2000)
Rue Du Salbert album
$13.29 It may have seemed presumptuous for Gregg Karukas to call one of his most popular recordings You'll Know It's Me in 1995, but back then his sugary, ultra-melodic, kick-back-with-a-dash-of-funk keyboard style was truly identifiable from the first few notes of any song. Since then, however, he's pushed the rhythmic and stylistic envelope in so many exciting new directions that the Karukas of 2000 isn't quite the same guy; 1998's Blue Touch lived up to its title by going in what he calls a "bluesy, funky, greasy, and organic" direction, and his NCoded debut, Nightshift -- named, like his 1987 debut, The Nightowl, after his propensity to work vampire-like in his studio all night -- moves even further in that direction. His melodies are still as instantly hummable as ever, but he varies their surroundings to include Crusaders-inspired retro-soul elements, snazzy horn sections, and more Latin and Brazilian percussion patterns than ever before.
As always, Karukas chose to work with sidemen whom he feels a magical musical rapport with. Pat Kelley's snappy, high-tone electric guitar blends perfectly with Karukas' own upper-registering melodic dabblings on "Chasing the Wind," while Michael O'Neill's gritty wah-wah clicks prove the perfect foil for Karukas' soulful Fender Rhodes ...

Rue Du Salbert songs
$14.29 EarthBeat! Records celebrates its 20th anniversary with a compilation drawn from both the EarthBeat! and Music for Little People labels, originally issued on albums between 1989 and 2002, focusing on some of the best-known songs of the folk revival and the civil rights movement of the 1960s. There are stirring performances by unusual combinations of artists, starting with Woody Guthrie's "This Land Is Your Land," performed by Willie Nelson, Maria Muldaur, Tom Paxton, and John McCutcheon. Other notable folk, blues, and soul performers include Richie Havens (on a medley of spirituals), Taj Mahal ("Follow the Drinking Gourd"), and Wilson Pickett ("Don't Ever Let Nobody Drag Your Spirit Down"). A cappella groups the Persuasions and Sweet Honey in the Rock are featured, and there are narrations spoken by actors Ted Danson and Danny Glover. Although the music was recorded primarily in the 1990s, it speaks to a continuing tradition of activism and the songs that have accompanied it in earlier decades, and that seems to be the point -- that the movement for freedom, extending back to the abolitionism of the 19th century and the labor struggles of the Great Depression, ...
