There are few musicians whose music has indisputably advanced humanity. Reggae figurehead Bob Marley--a songwriter, poet, activist, and visionary--is one of them. The idea that a single-disc collection could represent the depth, breadth, and power of Marley's achievement is far-fetched, but LEGEND makes an excellent attempt. Every single one of its tracks is outstanding, and the artist's different faces--revolutionary ("Get Up Stand Up"), romantic ("Is This Love"), devout Rastafarian ("Buffalo Soldier"), and prophet ("One Love/People Get Ready") are equally represented.
In addition to his moving message of love and unity, Marley is a master songwriter, as the timelessness of songs like "Stir It Up," "I Shot the Sheriff," and the gorgeous, poignant "Redemption Song" proves. Of course, a true sampling of Marley's output would require some early ska material, the Wailer's debut (CATCH A FIRE), the definitive NATTY DREAD, and his later-period opus EXODUS, but LEGEND provides a highly satisfying, if brief, ...

| | Celtic Woman CD (2005)
Surround Floor music CDs
$15.39 CELTIC WOMAN is the brainchild of David Downes, a composer/conductor who was heavily involved with the American production of RIVERDANCE. Not surprisingly, all of the lights, drama, and musical bombast of that esteemed show are present on this production as well. Instead of showcasing legions of dancers, however, CELTIC WOMAN puts the emphasis on the rich heritage of traditional and contemporary Irish music, as performed by five talented female performers from varying musical backgrounds.
Though the melodies are often extremely simple and unadorned, the production is just as lush and majestic as anything on Yanni's LIVE AT THE ACROPOLIS, ...

Surround Floor music CDs
$13.59 Al Rapone & His Zydeco Express: Al Rapone (vocals, guitar, accordion, bass), Roy L. Chantier (vocals), David Nelson (guitar, background vocals), Leonard Gill (guitar, bass), Allen Fontenot (fiddle, vocals), Mitchell Cormier (accordion), Darrel Brasseaux (drums).
All songs written or co-written by Albert J. Lewis except "Kalinda" (traditional).
First-rate modern zydeco, at once slick, sophisticated, and rootsy. Rapone, who's the brother of zydeco superstar Queen Ida, is an inspiring bandleader, the possessor of a supple, soulful tenor. He also has ears for music beyond the bayou. Here, along with traditional, accordion-driven Cajun numbers like "La Vierge" and "Chere Duloone," he also offers up an impassioned '60s-style R&B ballad ("Our Hearts Will Dance in Love Again"), takes a turn toward Hank Williams country ("Springtime"), and goes totally instrumental ("Toussaint Shuffle") with some hot bluegrass banjo.
Recorded at Studio D and The Plant Studios, Sausalito, California and ...

| | Thelonious Monk Well You Needn't CD (2002)
Surround Floor album
$14.29 With his odd, angular piano style full of endless stops and spaces and baffling chordal resolutions, not to mention his unique circular compositions, Thelonious Monk was bop's mad scientist, an image that tended to confuse his absolute genius with the trappings of mere eccentricity. Monk was Monk, pure and simple, and if what one saw wasn't always necessarily what one got, well, that too was pure Monk. This collection combines a couple of Monk's earliest sides, "Flyin' Hawk" and "Drifting on a Reed," recorded in 1944 when Monk was the pianist for Coleman Hawkins, with a nice selection of Monk's ...
| | Garage Beat '66 Vol. 2: Chicks Are For Kids CD (2004)
Surround Floor CD music
$14.19 The second volume in Sundazed's Garage Beat '66 series follows much the same format as its predecessor: 20 garage rockers from all over America, though generally from the rawer end of the spectrum rather than the poppier side. There's a slightly higher concentration of names that'll be at least somewhat known to some of the less specialized listeners, though, including the Guess Who (their 1966 single "Believe Me"), the Remains, the Barbarians (with their crude Merseybeat-influenced debut 45, "Hey Little Bird," which was their best recording), the Litter, the Five Americans (with their 1964 single "I'm Feeling O.K."), We the People, the Spiders (who evolved into Alice Cooper), the Ugly Ducklings (with a previously unreleased version of "I'm a Man"), and the Sonics. That alone is enough to make it a better than average '60s garage compilation, and the sound quality (mastered, unusually for a garage anthology, from original sources) and detailed track-by-track annotation by Ugly Things publisher Mike Stax ...
