| | Pink Martini Sympathique CD (1997)
Kotobani Dekinai music CDs
$13.89 The first album by Portland, Oregon's tongue in cheek lounge pop orchestra Pink Martini, SYMPATHIQUE, was originally released in 1997 on the band's own Heinz label. Although the album contains two originals by singer China Forbes and pianist Thomas Lauderdale, the title track and "Lullaby," the bulk of the album's 12 songs consists of new arrangements of loungy favorites like "Never On Sunday," "Que Sera Sera," "Brazil," and "Song of the Black Lizard," taken from the soundtrack of a Japanese cult film. Unlike contemporaries such as Combustible Edison, Pink Martini had the musical chops and heartfelt love of the style to keep the album from descending into snarky kitsch. In 2009, Heinz Records released the first ever vinyl edition of the album.
Recorded at Stiles Recording Studio, Portland, Oregon, from December 1996 to April 1997.
Pink Martini: China Forbes, Thomas Lauderdale.
Personnel: China Forbes (vocals); Dan Faehnle (guitar); Aaron Meyer (violin); David Eby (cello); Gavin Bondy (trumpet); ...

| | Yasmin Levy Mano Suave CD (2007)
Kotobani Dekinai CD music
$13.49 Yasmin Levy has proved herself to be the leading exponent of Ladino song (Ladino is the language of the Sephardic Jews whose roots are in Spain). However, her previous albums have never quite captured her potential. This time, though, she's hit the spot, finding both the intensity of performance and delicacy of arrangement that's been her hallmark. The style is a mix of influences that blend perfectly -- listen carefully and you can hear traces of flamenco nestled alongside Middle Eastern music, with influences from around the Mediterranean liberally scattered across the sound. Her voice is in glorious form, with a depth of purity that illustrates ...

| | Mama's & The Papa's California Dreamin' CD (2005)
Kotobani Dekinai album
$7.99 The Collectables compilation California Dreamin' is a ten-track, budget-priced set that contains some of the Mamas & the Papas's best-loved tunes, including "Monday, Monday," "Go Where You Wanna Go," "Words of Love," and "California Dreamin'" plus six other minor hits. As budget-line collections go, California Dreamin' isn't bad, especially since it contains the original versions of these tracks, but better collections are available for not much more money. Pick up the 1998 remastered edition of Greatest Hits on MCA instead. ~ Al Campbell
MCA Special Products' California Dreamin' boasts a blend of hits and album tracks, highlighted by "Monday, Monday," "Sing for Your Supper," "Glad to Be Unhappy," and the title track. Although this is a far cry from a definitive hits collection or even an informative overview, it's nevertheless an entertaining sampler that should be of interest to budget-minded casual fans. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
California Dreamin': The Songs of the Mamas & the Papas is a one-hour documentary prepared for public television, to be shown during pledge drives to get those baby boomers to call in and contribute. As its title and the TV-G rating that pops up right at the beginning suggest, this look at the group is more interested in the music than in wallowing in the backstage scandals much loved by, for example, VH1 Behind the Music, which spent a very different hour chronicling the Mamas & the Papas' career a few years earlier. Not that those elements are entirely absent. At one point, mention is made of the affair between Michelle Phillips and Denny Doherty that rent the group, although it comes up in a musical context, as Phillips' husband John Phillips (in an interview conducted in 1986) says he took musical revenge by having the group sing songs like "I Saw Her Again" and "Straight Shooter" that alluded to the affair. John Phillips' drug problems (which postdated the group) do not come up, although, in an interview included as one of the bonuses on the DVD, producer Lou Adler regrets that Phillips "destructed." For the most part, however, things are on the up and up in this consideration, perhaps a bit too much, in fact. Michelle Phillips gets the lion's share of the commentary, which is provided entirely by the group members (albeit with very little involvement from Cass Elliot, who died in 1974), with additional remarks by such associates as Barry McGuire and John Sebastian, in oral history style, without a narrator. The group's story is told in a general way, with many pauses for performances, most of which are drawn from 1960s television programs such as The Hollywood Palace and The Ed Sullivan Show, and most of which find the group lip-syncing to their hits. A special highlight is the material drawn from a TV tribute to Rodgers & Hart that includes the ...
