| | Yasmin Levy Mano Suave CD (2007)
Osaka Wo Utau CD music
$13.49 Yasmin Levy has proved herself to be the leading exponent of Ladino song (Ladino is the language of the Sephardic Jews whose roots are in Spain). However, her previous albums have never quite captured her potential. This time, though, she's hit the spot, finding both the intensity of performance and delicacy of arrangement that's been her hallmark. The style is a mix of influences that blend perfectly -- listen carefully and you can hear traces of flamenco nestled alongside Middle Eastern music, with influences from around the Mediterranean liberally scattered across the sound. Her voice is in glorious form, with ...

| | Balfa Brothers Play Traditional Cajun Music: Vols. 1 & 2 CD (1987)
Osaka Wo Utau CD music
$13.59 Originally released on Swallow (6011) in 1965 and Swallow (6019) in 1974. Includes French and English translations.
If you want to go straight to the source and hear real Cajun music without any hint of crossover, look to the Balfa Brothers. Though they were a popular live attraction as early as 1948, Dewey, Will, Burke, Harry, and Rodney (with assistance from family friend Hadley Fontenot on accordion) didn't record their first LP until 1965. Their second followed a full nine years later. Both are included on this seminal Cajun disc, and the purity of the group's performances is stunning.
Theirs is an entirely acoustic sound, based on the jangling rhythm of the guitar, the sprightly tinkling of the triangle, and two wailing fiddles, alternately melancholy and joyous. Dewey Balfa, the band's de facto leader is possessed ...

| | Budi Siebert Light Dance CD (2003)
Osaka Wo Utau songs
$13.39 Büdi Siebert, a veteran German flutist and multi-instrumentalist with a penchant for all points musically East, seems to be running a commercial on The Light Dance for a fascinating t'ai chi item called the IDOGO pole. A whole page of the liner notes is devoted to explaining how this short stick, developed by a t'ai chi master in Germany, increases the energy flow through the body's meridians. The lush, dreamy music on the 14 tracks seems to have been written as accompaniment to the exercise of putting this all into practice. While the bamboo flutes dominate, Siebert also plays the guzheng (large Chinese zither), keyboards, and percussion and is helped out by the guitars of longtime compatriot Ralf Illenberger and the "soundpaintings" of Gibbs Horizon-Platen. The hour begins with the pluck of the guzheng before entering a realm of Eastern ambient hypnosis on "Awakening Chi." With a tune called "Celebrating Silence," the vibe seems geared toward peace and relaxation. The mood never much ...
| | Earshot Two CD (2004)
Osaka Wo Utau album
$10.89 Listening to the doom and gloom that permeates Earshot's sophomore effort, the initial sonic resemblance to Tool is striking. Although guitar-playing vocalist Wil Martin sounds like Tool's Maynard Keenan at times, Earshot manages to stake its own musical claim via the churning guitars of Mike Callahan and Scott Kohler and the pulsing rhythm section of bassist Johnny Sprague and drummer Chas Stumbo. Betrayal and angst are the orders of the day throughout the hills and valleys of these potent songs. Here Martin touches on plenty of dark subject matter, be it a horrible break-up (a tormented "Tongue-Tied"), or a desperate escape from a grim situation (the soaring "Goodbye"). However, Earshot does find a silver lining amid all the bad scenarios, particularly the epic "Nice to Feel the ...
| | Rough Guide To The Music Of The Sahara CD (2005) (Import) United Kingdom
Osaka Wo Utau CD music
$12.79 Most Westerners probably don't really think of the Sahara Desert as a hotbed (sorry) of musical culture, so it might be hard to know what to expect from this collection. As it turns out, the music of the Sahara region seems to be pretty sedate and even delicate, which makes a certain kind of sense when you think about it -- blistering heat and raging winds probably create neither a desire to dance around a lot nor much of a taste for wild raving noise. The songs that feature voices singing in Arabic and accompanied ...
