| | Gregory Isaacs Night Nurse CD (1982) Remastered
Zenkyokushu-Nanbu Koiuta CD music
$10.45 A classic release from one of Jamaica's greats, NIGHT NURSE shows the Cool Ruler at his best--performing melodic, chilled reggae such as the title track and "Hot Stepper." The title track was a hit for Simply Red when they covered it in 1997. Although at his most prolific in the mid '80s, when he was beset by financial problems, Isaacs managed to maintain the quality of his material as this album proves. The Roots Radics provide excellent backing for Isaacs' smooth vocals. Perhaps a bit too mellow for fans of more militant reggae such as that purveyed by the Revolutionaries, time has nevertheless proved this to be a classic reggae album--the epitome of the feel-good Jamaican sound.
Although his 1981 album, More Gregory, was picked up for international distribution, Gregory Isaacs' 1982 release, Night Nurse, was his first to be designed for an audience outside Jamaica. Accordingly, Island Records head Chris Blackwell upgraded the overall sound quality, making this Isaacs' most professional-sounding record yet, and he brought in synthesizer player Wally Badarou to overdub keyboard parts on the tracks, making them less spare and distinguishing the arrangements more. Isaacs and his backup band, the ...

| | Colosseum Those Who Are About To Die Salute You CD (1969) England
Zenkyokushu-Nanbu Koiuta album
$10.59 THOSE WHO ARE ABOUT TO DIE SALUTE YOU is a 1969 album by the British jazz-rock band Colosseum.
Colosseum's debut album is a powerful one, unleashing each member's instrumental prowess at one point while consolidating each talent to form an explosive outpouring of progressive jazz/rock the next. Those Who Are About to Die Salute You is coated with the volatile saxophone playing of Dick Heckstall-Smith, the thunderous keyboard assault of Dave Greenslade, and the bewildering guitar craft of James Litherland. Together, Colosseum skitters and glides through brisk musical spectrums of freestyle ]jazz and British blues, sometimes held tightly in place by Greenslade's Hammond organ, while other times let loose by the brilliancy of the horn and string interplay. Each song sparks its own personality and its very own energy level, giving the band instant notoriety upon the album's release in 1969. Not only did Colosseum sound different from other jazz fusion bands of the era, but they could easily take the unconventional elements of their style and churn them into palatable and highly significant musical thoroughfares. Some of the more compelling tracks include "Walking in the Park," led by its powerful trumpet segments, and "Pretty Hard Luck," which embarks on a stylish blues excursion with colorful ...

| | Beenie Man Kingston To King Of The Dancehall CD (2005) Bonus Tracks; Japan
Zenkyokushu-Nanbu Koiuta songs
$36.45 First off, much respect to Virgin for resisting words like "definitive" or even "greatest" on their stellar collection of Beenie Man. The rightfully crowned King has way too many hits to be contained by a single disc, and licensing them from all the different labels Beenie has been on would be a massive undertaking. Instead of trying to be the last word in Beenie, Kingston to King of the Dancehall strives to be an introduction to the man's later material, but not as late as you'd think. While it would have been interesting to include Beenie's hits as an adolescent, Kingston to King of the Dancehall chooses 1995's massive Jamaican hit "Slam" as its earliest track. Including the poignant "No Mama No Cry" from two years earlier would have been a Beenie fan's wet dream, but picking up when the man was on top makes for an incredibly exciting collection and a "welcome newcomers" set of more polished tracks. Virgin is obviously going for the come-latelys here, ones that came to the man through the hit "Dude" and his sweet and breezy Janet Jackson team-up, "Feel It Boy" (which is only included on the DVD, keeping the CD nearly 100 percent Jamaican-powered). Can't blame them -- dancehall is a tough sell -- but the way the compilers introduce beginners to the man's dynamic career is more than admirable, it's downright brilliant. "Who Am I" and "Girls Dem Sugar" are the catchy, fully formed tracks the listener is first entranced by, holding his hand and leading him to the more skeletal but no less worthy "Romie" ("an him big fat sister Nyomi") and "Ole Dawg." Tracks like the "Girl Dem Sugar" remix with Mya and "Love Me Now" with Wyclef (which borrows equally from Naughty by Nature's "O.P.P." and Yellowman's "Zungguzungguguzungguzeng") represent ...
