Everyday ThingsRachel Wagner“…my tired eyes are mesmerized; after days filled with babies and laundry…you say ‘sing for me…’ and I fly again…”Rachel Wagner has spent years making music in and around the everyday things of life. It seems appropriate that her first full length recording “Everyday Things” was made within the same walls where this music was born. With a life long passion for music, writing songs was a natural progression in pursuing her love of music. Through the years, Rachel enjoyed discovering the creative paths carved out by the artists that inspired her to try her own hand at songwriting; artists like Julie Miller, The Innocence Mission, and Sam Phillips. She practiced songwriting for the pure joy of the craft, and began to occasionally perform at local establishments, usually just Rachel and her piano. After marrying and having kids, she continued to write and perform as time allowed, waiting for the right time to make a recording. Rachel started hosting annual “Living Room Concerts”, packing in as many people as could fit into her living room. These house concerts were always crowded and cozy, but had a wonderful, intimate and almost magical quality that enveloped everyone present as Rachel, and occasional other musical guests, shared their music“Everyday Things” began as a conversation on a cold winter night in 2004. Rachel and her husband were catching up after a long day. The children tucked in for the night, they sat on the couch and shared their thoughts about the kids and each other…dreams and plans…and music…it finally seemed like the time to try a recording. Not long after, they purchased a computer and dove headfirst into the world of recording. Having no experience with computers or microphones proved a challenge, but they learned by doing, and asking many questions along the way. Rachel recorded all piano and vocals for “Everyday Things” and was joined by good friends and talented musicians Andrew Browne on acoustic bass, and Josh Grayem on guitar. The use of drums and cello round out the acoustic sound that is richly layered throughout the album. All tracks were recorded in the living room and upstairs playroom of their home, and if you listen very carefully, you can hear “house sounds” in the background to the likes of the dog’s toenails on the wood floor and the kids or the phone making an unexpected entrance. One cannot help enjoying even these “slips” as all of this music embraces the realness of life. The sweetness and the heartache of everyday life come out in a simply real, yet poignantly poetic meandering throughout the album. Rachel doesn’t merely sing about motherhood, marriage, and the ups and downs of domestic life; she sings of the joys and struggles that are common to the human experience. Each song represents a small snapshot of life, introspective and explorative, yet inclusive as she voices the sentiments of us all.

Sarah Mcquaid When Two Lovers Meet CD  (2006)

Born in Madrid, Spain and raised in Chicago, singer/guitarist and songwriter Sarah McQuaid lived in Ireland from 1994 to 2007. She has now moved with her husband and two children to the home formerly occupied by her parents near Penzance, Cornwall. As might be expected of one who has led such a peripatetic existence, Sarah developed a taste for the road early on: From the age of twelve she was embarking on ten-day tours of the US and Canada with the Chicago Children’s Choir. A year or two later she was already a prolific songwriter, entertaining her classmates at school assemblies. At eighteen she went to France for a year to study philosophy at the University of Strasbourg, where her performance at a local folk club drew a rave review in the Dernières Nouvelles d’Alsace, saluting the “superbe chanteuse d’outre-Atlantique qui fit passer comme une vibration émotionnelle dans une salle conquise” (superb singer from across the Atlantic who caused an emotional vibration to pass through a conquered hall)!Having discovered Irish music and the DADGAD open tuning during her stint in France, Sarah went on to found the traditional band Carnloch after graduating from Haverford College (a Quaker institution better known as the co-educational counterpart of its sister college Bryn Mawr) with a Magna Cum Laude (High Honours) BA in philosophy. The band toured folk clubs, colleges and universities for several years, and released a self-produced CD, The Crooked Road, in 1993.In 1994, Sarah moved to Ireland, where she became a weekly folk music columnist for the Evening Herald and a contributor to Hot Press magazine. She is also the author of a guitar tutor, The Irish DADGAD Guitar Book, described by The Irish Times as “a godsend to aspiring traditional guitarists.”In the autumn of 1997, she recorded her debut solo album, When Two Lovers Meet, featuring traditional tunes and songs along with one original number. The album received a sizeable amount of airplay and drew highly favourable reviews: “Boy, hasn’t Sarah got a good voice – rich, deep, mature,” Irish Music Magazine ...

Vital Mines Knaves & Money Changers CD  (2007)

Everyday Things music CDs
CD $13.15
Vital Mines taps a rich musical tradition to create its own unique sound. With its focus on well-crafted songs, the band has quickly attracted an avid following of music lovers in Northeast Ohio who appreciate a good tune wrapped around a good story. Fans and newcomers alike say they hear strains of Dylan, Dire Straits, Wilco, The Dead, Neil Young, Whiskeytown, Jeff Beck, and Johnny Cash but still can’t quite categorize the music. In the end, they want to hear more. Vital Mines formed in 2004 and consists of veterans from Cleveland bands including The Unknown (pop punk), Rainy Day Saints (alt. pop), The Freeloders (folk country), The Swing Lizards (swing & blues) and even some local church bands (go figure!). The music is eclectic and original with the occasional cover thrown in for good measure, played on both electric and acoustic instruments. The band regularly plays local venues including The Barking Spider, The Beachland Tavern and Wilbert’s and has shared the stage with artists such as The Drams, Anne E. DeChant, Carlos Jones, Michael Stanley, Cats on Holiday, Crooked Mile, Rockabilly Cats, Al’s Fast Freight, and Mr. Stress Blues Band. The band puts on a great live show and fans flock to see what they're going to pull out next.Music Review - Cool Cleveland7/11/07Knaves and MoneychangersVital MinesSelf ReleasedA while back, I was at a Whiskeyhounds show and a fellow attendee asked me why there’s an overabundance of Americana music coming out of Cleveland. “From where better,” ...
