The New Midwest centers its musical compass on vocal harmony, rock and roll guitar riffs, and rootsy rhythm. Finding inspiration from the eclectic pool of old country, dusty soul, modern rock, and singer/songwriter folk, the band celebrates Americana with its music. Chris Smit (vocals & harmonica) and Michael VanHouten (drums & vocals) have been playing together for over ten years, and guitarists Jason Hammond and Ben VanArragon bring the band into new and splendid places. REVIEWS:"Amazing textures, harmonies and just plain powerful music..."-The Grand Rapids Press"Chris Smit's and Michael VanHouten's songs at their heart are folk songs telling stories...both poignant and "laid back country boy" at the same time. Smit's songs call you in to hear a little twang in the Country-influenced Rock like Jason Walker, James McMurtry, or an upbeat Grand Drive, but they don't just leave you with beer bottles on the barroom floor. They leave you searching hearts—yours, your loved ones..."-Musicspectrum.com New Midwest Songs | 1. | Turn Around |

New Midwest album
$19.98 It's a commonly held opinion among fans and band alike that Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers' lone live album, 1986's Pack Up the Plantation, didn't quite capture the group at its peak, so there has been a long-standing need for another live set, which 2009's Live Anthology finally provides. Like its closest cousin, Bruce Springsteen's Live 1975-1985, Live Anthology almost overcompensates for the long wait by offering almost too much music, cherrypicking highlights from 1978 to 2007. In its simplest incarnation, Live Anthology is a super-affordable, four-disc box set running 48 tracks, which is eight cuts longer than Springsteen's box, plenty long enough for most fans, but in its deluxe version, available only through Best Buy, there's an additional CD, plus two previously unreleased DVDs -- a 1978 New Years ...
| | John Mayer Battle Studies CD (2009)
New Midwest CD music
$11.17 It's no secret that John Mayer is a 21st Century Fox, wining and dining women all through tabloid headlines, so it's about time he delivered an album that traded upon his loverman persona -- and Battle Studies is that record in spades. Retaining more than a modicum of the slick, soul-blues undertones of Continuum, Mayer fashions a modern groove album, a record that maintains a smooth seductive vibe so thoroughly it spills into a one-man band cover of "Crossroads." Mayer remains somewhat of a disciple of Slowhand, but he shows an unusual interest in the big AOR stylings of Journeyman, along with Stevie Ray Vaughan's In Step, creating a coolly clean blend of synths and Strats, one that's as much about texture as it is about song.something perfectly appropriate for a make-out album like this. Sometimes, Mayer dips too heavily toward the texture, but ...

| | Turn-Ons Parallels CD (2006)
New Midwest album
$9.85 The Turn-ons formed in 1997 in Seattle when singer/guitarist Travis DeVries met musically like-minded guitarist, Corey Gutch. The two were soon joined by bassist Sharon Oshima and drummer Will Hallauer. Producer/multi-instrumentalist Erik Blood was added to the band in late 2000, and the lineup was, at last, complete. The band spent much of 2001 promoting their debut album The Turn-ons, playing sold-out shows in Seattle and San Francisco with bands such as the Strokes, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and Imperial Teen, and tirelessly writing and recording new material. They caught the eye of REM's Peter Buck who described the band in his column for Q magazine, as "...simply my favourite new Seattle band. If I said that their sound was a combination of the Velvets, T. Rex and Spiritualized with a dash of Yo La Tengo, it wouldn't do them justice."For their second release, a five-song EP titled, Love Ruined Us, The Turn-ons were committed to guitar driven pop, while expanding their space-glam-rock sound via soaring string arrangements, and fully indulging in their penchant for epic, anthemic ballads. The EP was selected for the SPIN College Radio show, John Kennedy's X-Posure show in the UK on XFM 104.9, and KEXP 90.3FM - establishing the band as a regular in-studio guest. In 2004 The Turn-ons released their second full-length East. From the tight, raw guitar-roar of 'Neighborhood Killer', to the intricate harmonies of 'Sunday Afternoon', to the reverb-drenched melancholy of 'Won't Come Home', The Turn-ons created a rock album that delivered on the promises of Love Ruined Us, and explored a new sound. Response to East was overwhelmingly positive, garnering praise from SPIN Magazine (4/04) as one of the best new bands in the northwest. Tracks from East were ...

Over the last 13 years, her example as a spiritually expanded being has been a great inspiration for me. I wanted to contribute something to her ongoing relief efforts for disaster victims (Tsunami, Hurricane Katrina, etc) for which she has pledged over 23 million dollars. The proceeds from the sale of this CD will go directly to her efforts in this regard. In 1993, I was introduced to an electrician in Santa Fe, NM named Vyasa. He had been asked by his Guru to make a CD of devotees singing sacred songs. Inquiring how he was to accomplish this without any knowledge or training, his Guru said, "Buy a computer and hire professionals to help you. Let the devotees do the singing." I was brought in as a musical consultant to help on this project and thus began my relationship with Amma . The CDs, called "English Bhajans" were produced annually. Two types of songs were recorded - English translations of traditional bhajans (songs) or new songs written by devotees. I helped with both. In 2002, when Herb Graham Jr. was asked to oversee the annual recordings, I was asked to contribute some original songs. I wrote two songs and recorded them. I did the same in 2003. "Wings of Peace" was Volume 7 of the English Bhajan series; "This World" was Volume 8.In 2004, I didn't have time to be involved in the CD project but at the last minute they needed a song to make the CD complete. I offered "Can You Save Me" but was unable to produce the recording properly or add tracks to make it sound complete. When the opportunity arose to make this compilation, I jumped at the chance to make this song complete and present it to Amma. The 2005 Amma tour left me with a heart wide open. Paul and I decided to record some songs I had written for Amma but never recorded, plus two new songs. It was a beautiful experience, we sat together ...
