"Whether mixing electro with great vocal pop melodies, or acoustic strums, stuttering hip hop beats and emotional static with dub, Sydney's OLLO have been compared with The Flaming Lips, The Triffids, Caribou, Prefuse 73 and Herbert. On this second vocal heavy album the Sydney boys prove how they managed to gatecrash BBC Radio 1's Festive 50 top 10 recently and why Linda Evangelista chooses to sashay down the catwalk to their music."" | | Paul McCartney Good Evening New York City CDs (2009) With DVD; Digipak
If If
$15.98 Unlike its 2002 predecessor Back in the U.S., Good Evening New York City doesn't cherrypick highlights from a tour, it commemorates a specific event: the inauguration of Citi Field -- the replacement for the now-defunct Shea Stadium, where the Beatles played a legendary show in 1965 -- in the summer of 2009. The circumstances may be different -- different enough to lead to a Billy Joel cameo on "I Saw Her Standing There," the piano man returning a favor from Paul, who played at Billy's Shea-closing shows in 2008 -- and McCartney might have two strong albums of new material to draw upon, but as an album, Good Evening New York City plays a lot like Back in the U.S. with a whopping 17 of its 35 tracks shared between the two titles. More importantly, the vibe is the same, with Macca delivering an expertly balanced and sequenced set with all the skill of the old pro that he is. Apart from the inclusion of "Mrs. Vanderbilt" and "I'm Down," there are no surprises, either in song selection or performance, but no surprises doesn't mean no satisfaction, and this is plenty entertaining

| | John Fogerty Blue Ridge Rangers Rides Again CDs (2009) With DVD; Deluxe Edition
If If
$14.29 John Fogerty released his first solo CD, an album of covers on which he played all the instruments, under the name the "Blue Ridge Rangers," and he revives that concept on 2009's THE BLUE RIDGE RANGERS RIDES AGAIN. Where the first smacked of the righteous zeal of a young purist, RIDES AGAIN is a lot looser in its attack, which is reflected in the way it splits the difference between country and rockabilly classics and reflective numbers from '70s songwriters. These unexpected covers of John Prine, Delaney & Bonnie, and John Denver offer a peek at a sweeter, gentler Fogerty, a Fogerty who can also be heard on how he lays back instead of pushing ahead on Buck Owens' "I Don't Care (Just as Long as You Love Me)" and Ray Price's "I'll Be There," and even on his revamp of his own neglected swamp rocker "Change in the Weather." He can still raise an unholy ruckus however, wailing ...

| | Rick Nelson All Time Greatest Hits CD (2003)
If If
$6.59 Titling Rick Nelson's entry in Collectables' budget best-of series, Priceless Collections, All Time Greatest Hits may be a bit of a stretch, as it doesn't include Nelson's comeback smash "Garden Party," but it comes very close nonetheless. The tracks are taken from early in Nelson's career when he was still a convincing rocker and include great rockabilly tracks like "Be-Bop Baby," "Waitin in School," and "If You Can't Rock Me"; teen ballads like "Stood Up," "It's Late," and "Hello Mary Lou"; and one of the saddest, most haunting songs ever recorded, "Lonesome Town." At only 12 tracks, the disc rushes by far too quickly, but it does serve as a good introduction to the work of one of the most underrated early rockers. However, you are going to want more Rick Nelson once you hear him, so you might as ...
| | Darkness Permission To Land CD (2003) (Import) United Kingdom
If If
$13.15 Pouncing onto the British music scene like the hyperactive spawn of the late-1970s hard-rock scene, the Darkness unveiled their 2003 debut, PERMISSION TO LAND, to great success in the UK. Led by unitard-wearing, falsetto-brandishing vocalist/guitarist Justin Hawkins, the group revels in the kind of pop metal once made famous by Def Leppard and Whitesnake, boasting big guitar riffs and driving rock rhythms. The band's not-so-secret weapon is Hawkins himself--an irrepressible, high-kicking frontman who gleefully unleashes lyrics such as "a nimbus of blue light surrounds a crimson paw" in a voice that ranges from a growl to a wail rivaling Queen's Freddie Mercury or Judas Priest's Rob Halford.
Although the Darkness may come across as tongue-in-cheek metal revivalists, they're entirely sincere on soaring power ballads ...

| | Big Broadcast Vol. 2 CD (2006)
If If
$14.35 Producer Rich Conaty did an excellent job for this CD of gathering together mostly obscure recordings from the 1924-1937 period, finishing Big Broadcast: Jazz and Popular Music of the 1920s and 1930s with two unissued performances. Along the way is an excellent mixture of white and black bands, instrumentals and vocals. Whether it is the early scat vocal of Don Redman with Fletcher Henderson ("My Papa Doesn't Two-Time No Time"), some period but worthy singing from Scrappy Lambert, Rube Bloom's complex but catchy "Soliloquy," an alternate take of Cab Calloway's "Is That Religion," the great Marion Harris singing "Blue Again" or Garland Wilson's heated piano solo version of "Just One of Those Things," there is much to enjoy and savor throughout this strong sampler. Even veteran collectors will find some of these selections to be very rare, and Rich Conaty's informative liner notes are an added plus. This very enjoyable release is highly recommended for '20s collectors. ~ Scott Yanow
Rich Conaty has for over 30 years hosted the weekly New York City radio program The Big Broadcast on WFUV-FM. Since he features jazz and pop music from the 1920s and '30s on his shows, his CD compilations (of which this is the second) stick to that era, emphasizing rarities. The Big Broadcast, Vol. 2 is mostly in chronological order (except for concluding with an unissued private recording of a 1932 Red Nichols broadcast performance), ranging from 1922 to 1936. Although it has a wide range of styles and moods, each selection has much to offer. Highlights from the 25 performances include a charming Eva Taylor-Clarence Williams vocal-piano duet on "Baby Won't You Please Come Home"; Rube Bloom's virtuosic piano on "Spring Fever"; a forgotten Paul Whiteman recording ("Love and Kisses") that has ...
