Long-running Norwegian goth metal band Tristania return with Illumination, an album that largely dispenses with the overtly metallic aspects of their earlier sound. In their place, Tristania have perhaps inadvertently created a single-handed revival of the late-'80s goth rock sound, much beloved by mascara-wearing, black-clad students of both sexes with late-night college radio shows. Songs like "Down" and "Sacrilege" are hugely reminiscent of the Sisters of Mercy at their most pop-oriented; indeed, the former of these songs could be a hit among the '80s revival crowd even today. With vocals split between Vibeke Stene's angelic, Kate Bush-like trill and Osten Bergoy's low-end lounge lizard Dracula vibe (think of Bryan Ferry mutated with the Cult's Ian Astbury), this is the smoothest Tristania album yet, with the clichéd death grunt vocals of guitarists Anders Hilde and Svein Solvang held to the barest minimum and keyboardist Einar Moen taking a stronger instrumental role. Although Illumination is more likely to appeal to the darkwave and goth crowds than the standard metal fan, those audiences should find much to enjoy here. ~ Stewart Mason

| | Lacuna Coil In A Reverie CD (1999)
Illumination CD music
$13.85 On its 1999 full-length debut, IN A REVERIE, the Italian goth-metal ensemble Lacuna Coil offers up a melodic yet moody set of songs that prefigures the successful formula of Arkansas's Evanescence by years. While the group features both male and female vocalists, singer Cristina Scabbia often steals the show with her expressive voice, which is equally effective on amped-up, guitar-driven tunes ("My Wings") and orchestral, pop-tinged numbers ("To Myself I Turned"). Although ...
| | Lacuna Coil Unleashed Memories CD (2001)
Illumination music CDs
$12.85 Lacuna Coil's second full-length album successfully combines the backbone of metal with the ethereal trappings of goth. While vocalist Cristina Scabbia gives the band their sonic calling card, additional vocals from the group's male singer, Andrea Ferro, add tonal variety and balance. Rarely succumbing to heavy-handedness, Lacuna Coil escapes the stylistic straitjacket of the goth/metal formula, making them more accessible than many of their peers. The special-edition release includes the band's Halflife EP as an added bonus. ~ Andy Hinds

| | Lacuna Coil Comalies CD (2002)
Illumination songs
$12.39 Representing a classic case of delayed fame, Italian goth-metal act Lacuna Coil broke into the American music consciousness via a much talked-about showing on the Ozzfest 2004 second stage, nearly two years after the release of their third album, COMALIES. Similar to its American counterparts Evanescence, this European sextet features the dual vocals of Cristina Scabbia and her male counterpart, Andrea Ferro. Despite the liberal amounts of keyboards added to the mix, guitarists Cristiano Migliore and Marco Biazzi more than hold their own, pumping choppy riffs into the 1980s-sounding "Self Deception" and the simmering opener "Swamped." What makes Lacuna Coil so unique in an often musically conservative genre is the band's ability to dabble with ethereal dynamics. Such is the case with the soaring title cut and equally potent "The Ghost Woman and the Hunter," both of which blend neo-classical riffing, swirling synth runs and a perfect juxtaposition of light and heavy vocal phrasing. To commemorate the group's Ozzfest 2004 stint, COMALIES was re-released with a bonus disc featuring nine cuts that include a mix of live and studio acoustic performances, along with videos for "Heaven's a Lie" and "Swamped."
U.S. edition of the Italian goth rock act's third album includes enhanced video track 'The Making of Coma Lies'. Century Media. 2002.

| | Poisonblack Escapexstacy CD (2003)
Illumination album
$9.29 Debut album from Finland's Poisonblack. The band is the brain-child of Sentenced's Ville Laihiala. Century Media. 2003.
Trading his microphone for a guitar, Sentenced frontman Ville Laihila teamed with Finnish musicians J.P. Leppaluoto (vocals) and Janne Kukkonen (bass) to write Escapexstacy, an energetic album of goth metal songs. Unlike many bands in the genre, Poisonblack is an vigorous bunch, relying on somber keyboards and Leppaluoto's vampiric vocals to provide the gloom. Featuring huge, catchy hooks and dynamic guitar riffs delivered with grim seriousness and shrouded in ethereal keyboards, their music is basically a gothic variation of pop-metal. This is particularly evident during "In Lust," a textbook power ballad, and the up-tempo "With Her I Die," a rocker that lifts its rousing guitar intro from, of all places, Poison's "Life Goes On." Listeners expecting this to be an exercise in chilling soundscapes will be in for a big surprise, but Poisonblack's energetic approach and hook-driven songwriting ...
| | Lacuna Coil Karmacode CD (2006) Enhanced CD
Illumination CD music
$12.69 Enhanced CD features the "Our Truth" video, 10 minute 'on the road' mini-movie, exclusive photo gallery and more.
Italy's goth-metal practitioners Lacuna Coil are unique among their heavy-metal brethren. With their sharp songwriting skills and high-minded classical influences, and the evocative vocals of lead singer Christina Scabbia, the band has an undeniably distinctive sound. KARMACODE, Lacuna Coil's 2006 release, is one of their most polished and accomplished efforts.
The band's melodic sensibility, which tends toward the dark and ambient, is at the center of KARMACODE, as is Scabbia's haunting, compelling singing. Moreover, the songs ...
| | Ruby Braff Calling Berlin, Vol. 1 CD (1995)
Illumination music CDs
$9.59 Cornetist Ruby Braff and pianist Ellis Larkins recorded a classic album of duets in 1955 and had a reunion in 1972. They waited another 22 years before cutting their third set but, despite the passing of time, the magic heard on their earlier recordings is still very much present on their Arbors release. Both Braff and Larkins love melodies and rarely leave the themes behind in their improvisations. They perform 15 Irving Berlin tunes, ranging from the famous ("Alexander's Ragtime Band," "Easter Parade," and "How Deep Is the Ocean") to the more obscure ("My Walking Stick," "You're Laughing at Me," and "Steppin' out with My Baby"). In all cases the interpretations are loving, personal, and uplifting. Guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli makes the group a trio on two numbers, and his mellow playing fits right in to the intimate setting. Because Braff (who has always had his own sound) has long been a jazz giant, and Larkins is rightfully considered an extraordinary accompanist and perfect on melodic ...
