| | Gregory Isaacs Night Nurse CD (1982) Remastered
Le Saut De L'Ange CD music
$10.45 A classic release from one of Jamaica's greats, NIGHT NURSE shows the Cool Ruler at his best--performing melodic, chilled reggae such as the title track and "Hot Stepper." The title track was a hit for Simply Red when they covered it in 1997. Although at his most prolific in the mid '80s, when he was beset by financial problems, Isaacs managed to maintain the quality of his material as this album proves. The Roots Radics provide excellent backing for Isaacs' smooth vocals. Perhaps a bit too mellow for fans of more militant reggae such as that purveyed by the Revolutionaries, time has nevertheless proved this to be a classic reggae album--the epitome of the feel-good Jamaican sound.
Although his 1981 album, More Gregory, was picked up for international distribution, Gregory Isaacs' 1982 release, Night Nurse, was his first to be designed for an audience outside Jamaica. Accordingly, Island ...

| | Lambchop Nixon CD (2000)
Le Saut De L'Ange songs
$9.75 Lambchop's NIXON is as wonderfully hard to figure out as anything that the inimitable 13-piece Nashville collective has yet issued. Gone, for the most part, are the august pedal-steel-driven soundscapes that categorized this album's predecessor. Instead, Kurt Wagner and company flesh out the funk and soul that first peaked through on WHAT ANOTHER MAN SPILLS.
NIXON carries on a loose association with the 37th President of the United States. The album-opening "The Old Gold Shoe" broaches the subject of legacy, while "Up With People" finds its inspiration in the proselytizing youth group of the same name that came to prominence during the Nixon administration. There's even a suggested reading list of Richard Nixon biographies in the disc's booklet. Instrumentally, the group pulls out all the stops, blending arena-rock outros, horns that mimic the music of John Phillip Sousa and Kool & the Gang with equal aplomb, a female backing chorus that recalls Pink Floyd at its most turgid, blaxploitation strings, and gurgling synth lines to glorious effect. Wagner revels deliriously in his postmodern soul-man role, layering the Curtis Mayfiled-inspired "What Else Could it Be" with high-pitched "la-la-las" and "hoo-hoos" and closing out the track with a sincere "awww, c'mere sugah."

| | Fela Kuti Zombie CD (1977)
Le Saut De L'Ange album
$14.29 ZOMBIE was released while Fela, a political enemy of the Nigerian government, was in prison in Lagos, Nigeria, serving a five-year sentence for currency smuggling. "I will never, never stop fighting," Fela is quoted as saying in the liner notes. "This jail only makes me stronger and I hope it's giving my people more courage to do their part in the struggle."
Includes liner notes by Jacqueline Grandchamp-Thiam, Rikki Stein and Mabinuori Kayode Idowu.
Digitally remastered by Pompon (Translab Paris, Paris, France).
With the inclusion of Nigerian master musician Fela Anikulapo Kuti's incendiary 1977 single, "Zombie," "Mr. Follow Follow," a typical anti-authoritarian exhortation, and a couple of hitherto-unreleased live cuts from the 1978 Berlin Jazz festival, ZOMBIE finds the iconoclastic singer and bandleader at his electrifying best. The title track, an anti-militaristic lampoon of the Nigerian armed forces, ...
