(2 Customer Reviews)
Perhaps best known for their thrash metal interpretation of Ray Parker, Jr.'s "Ghostbusters," Xentrix often found itself compared to Anthrax more than anyone. It isn't a bad comparison -- like Anthrax, Xentrix doesn't shy away from heavy subject matter, but also knows how to have fun. However, this isn't to say that Xentrix actually emulated Anthrax or anyone -- as Shattered Existence reminds us, Xentrix wasn't without a sound of its own. "Balance of Power," "Reasons for Destruction," "Dark Enemy" and other songs on this invigorating CD demonstrate that while Xentrix could be bone-crushing, the thrashers weren't nearly as extreme as some of the other bands on Roadrunner (such as Obituary and Deicide). Headbangers who can get into Metallica, Anthrax and Megadeth but may not care for grindcore will also find Xentrix accessible, as well as exciting. ~ Alex Henderson
Xentrix were one of the leading exponenets of UK thrash and Shattered Existence is their debut album, originally released in 1989. The album, "Shattered Existence", was recorded and mixed in nippy 14 days with the producer John Cuniberti bringing the best out of both the band and their material. Of the newer tracks, the likes of "Position of Security", "Crimes" and "Balance Of Power" proved that Xentrix could stand up against anything else the U.K. thrash scene had to offer. While "No Compromise", "Dark Enemy" and "Back In The Real World" show that you can play fast and in a controlled manner at the same time. Limited edition of 2000 hand-numbered copies. Shattered Existence album
$10.45 Most anyone still doubting Coroner's merits as anything but "the band formed by Celtic Frost's old roadies" was likely silenced by their very impressive second album, 1988's Punishment for Decadence. Though not nearly as adventurous as their previous employers early on, the members of Coroner had the clear advantage of being incredibly gifted musicians from day one; and aesthetically, they evidently already aspired to become the thrash metal power trio equivalent of Rush by splitting songwriting duties between guitarist Tommy T. Baron and bassist/singer Ron Ross, while drummer Marquis Marky handled the lyric-writing. The analogy may seem a tad far-fetched, but though Punishment for Decadence's focus was still very much on speed (as if the players are simply relishing the joys of pulling off such complex technical gymnastics in the first place), there's no disguising Coroner's amazing compositional talents to make it all work. To be sure, songs like "Absorbed" and "Shadow of a Lost Dream" stay true to thrash metal's melody-averse philosophy, but ...
| | Wolf Evil Star CD (2004)
Shattered Existence CD music
$12.15 Wolf has taken the music of '80s heavy metal bands such as Iron Maiden and Judas Priest and boiled it down to its essentials to produce a fast, loud, driving sound. From the high-pitched vocals to the effectively simple guitar solos, the band has got its formula down pat. Admittedly, the formula does get a bit repetitious by the end of the album because of the lack of adornment ...

| | Xentrix Kin CD (1992)
Shattered Existence songs
$12.19 Although they had very little competition to speak of amid Britain's overall piss-poor contributions to thrash metal, Xentrix always had little hope of challenging the genre's American titans in the eyes of fans -- most of whom viewed them as nothing more than a substandard Metallica copyists. And those negative perceptions were in no danger of being debunked by the arrival of their third album, Kin, in 1992, where tracks such as "A Friend to You," "All Bleed Red," and the "Unforgiven"-like "Release" saw Xentrix -- and particularly vocalist James Hetfield, er, Chris Astley -- sounding like a veritable Metallica tribute band! At least Astley's voice is both muscular and convincingly powerful on these blatant ripoffs, because elsewhere (see the ...

| | Tesla Bust A Nut CD (1994)
Shattered Existence music CDs
$5.69 At a time when image was virtually everything, Sacramento rockers Tesla brought a refreshing balance of flash and substance to the late-'80s hair metal landscape; they may have played the poser game to a certain degree, but only as much as they had to in order to mask their blue-collar origins and slip their oftentimes quite adventurous and sophisticated songwriting under the overhanging clouds of hair spray that were dulling listeners' minds. Both of their first albums, 1987's Mechanical Resonance and 1989's career best The Great Radio Controversy, fared especially well thanks to this blend of brains and brawn (touring with Def Leppard didn't hurt), but as the '90s dawned and the specter of grunge loomed over the horizon, Tesla's more natural inclinations began coming into focus -- first via 1990's stripped-down Five Man Acoustical Jam (literally the template that sparked the entire "unplugged" craze of the next decade), and ...

| | Bon Jovi One Wild Night: Live 1985-2001 CD (2001)
Shattered Existence album
$10.99 Following a five-year hiatus that found Jon Bongiovi pursuing an acting career, these Jersey boys emerged with the millennial CRUSH, an album that found them making a mini-comeback marked by chart success and Grammy nominations. On the heels of this wave of prosperity comes ONE WILD NIGHT, taken from a collection of hand-picked live gigs meant to reward long-standing fans (who've clamored for a concert album) and give newer ones a taste of Bon Jovi's career-spanning global performances.
In the 15-year span covered on this record, it's interesting to hear Bon Jovi's creative development. You get in-Japan versions of their breakout hit "Runaway" and "In And Out Of Love," an early number soaked in the crunching guitar and hard-hitting rhythms of the band's pop-metal origins. ...
