While Pete Townshend's iconic status as the guitarist and primary songwriter of the Who will commit his name to rock immortality, his solo career has also been long, prolific, and worthy of note. The 17-track DEFINITIVE COLLECTION does an admirable job of surveying the artist's solo work, including everything from his most memorable recordings to tracks from his 1989 musical, THE IRON MAN (arguably the nadir of Townshend's output).
But it's gems like "Rough Boys," "Slit Skirts," and "Let My Love Open the Door," that make DEFINITIVE COLLECTION worth having. The album isn't aimed at Townshend fans, who will likely own the essential studio albums (EMPTY GLASS and ALL THE BEST COWBOYS HAVE CHINESE EYES chief among them). Instead, DEFINITIVE COLLECTION is aimed at those curious about Townshend's post-Who work, and though song-for-song it isn't a match for his GOLD anthology, this generous, evenly compiled set does justice to its subject.

Pete Townshend Definitive Collection Songs Definitive Collection Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Strange but Good Pete has some good songs here. His songs are very detailed and have a lot going on which gives them a very unique sound. I'm glad I just got the single CD "best of" because, although this is good music, it's just a little too strange and bubbly for me at times. Definitive Single Disc This is the definitive single disc compilation of the solo career of the genious behind the Who. Three songs from Who Came First, three from Rough Mix, three from Empty Glass, two from Chinese Eyes, one from Scoop, two from White City, one from Iron Man, and two from Psychoderelict, present an extremely well-chosen overview of Townshend's solo career. Of note are three selections written for his incredible Lifehouse project, including the rare "Mary" which was never recorded by the Who. If the two disc set Gold (or Euro release Anthology) seems too much, this disc could be considered essential. Submitted by Paul (Little Rock, AR, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Definitive Collection album
$10.15 From the liner notes:Remember your last day in utero? How about your first days outside the womb? Prepare to embark on a beautiful musical journey that will take you back to those incredible days. Relive the majesty that accompanies life in utero and experience the wonder of discovery like only the pristine mind of a newborn can…THE SONGS:1) On The Inside (October 15, 6:23 PM)Life in the womb. One can only imagine the amazingly monotonous ecstasy a baby experiences in the supremely protected environment of the womb. Oblivious to the entire world awaiting outside, without a care or concern. Not a single want...2) Lullaby #1 (October 16, 5:02 AM)Rest now, everything is about to change.3) From The Forest, A Child (October 16, 2:24 PM)Where was the child before the womb? He was in the earth, the animals, and the trees. Everything is connected in this manner, nothing arises de novo. From the earth we arise and to the earth we shall return. While we are here we are given a name, carefully chosen by those responsible for our existence. What does your name mean?4) On The outside (October 16, 6:13 PM)What would it sound like if a baby could think about the fun he or she would have running and playing along a stream on a hot summer afternoon?5) Three In The Morning (October 17, 3:00 AM)Of the songs on this album, this is the only one I wrote prior to this recording. I wrote this song early one morning in September 2006 on a three string guitar given to me by a new friend, Phil Draper. He is directly responsible for my introduction to lutherie and indirectly responsible for many great times and good recordings that ensued. It has always been very soothing and a joy to play; it seemed to fit in well with the other songs here. Thanks Phil. I would guess this album would not exist had we not met.6) Lullaby #2 (October 17, 11:01 AM)Sleep now…please.7) Smiling In Your Sleep (October 17, 11:27 AM)By the end of the second month, most infants will begin to smile spontaneously and without any stimuli. This is known as ‘indiscriminate smiling.’ By the end of the third month, they develop a ‘social smile’ in which they smile in response to the human voice, to express pleasure, and to reciprocate a smile. The smile of a newborn is among the most cherished things and two months seems like an eternity to wait. Fortunately, you don’t have to; watch them while they sleep…8) Trundlin’ Monkey (October 17, 5:59 PM)Some babies have teddy bears or thread-bare ‘blankies.’ My kid has a little trundle-tail monkey…9) Sleep Now, Little Dreamer (October 17, 8:30 PM)As a new parent, if you find yourself having difficulty processing the reality of this new life for which you are responsible, if you have difficulty grasping the enormity of the entire situation…look at the hands. Those tiny little hands are absolutely the most lifelike (read ...
