Afterdark-Capetown songs
$16.09 Made for those who are looking for more sophisticated club music, Back Room, Vol. 2 is a two-disc collection of DJ-mixed tracks that highlight the more sensuous, lush, and seductive nature of house. The beats are there, but the keys and synths, the flutes, and the smooth (generally female) vocals are more important, and are shown off well. Not all of the artists included are big names in the scene, but the overall aesthetic is ...

Afterdark-Capetown CD music
$16.49 Of the numerous brands of mix CDs released by Kinkysweet, the Frequent Flyer line is the most interesting. Like all Kinkysweet releases, each is a double-CD mix comprised of deep house, most tracks employing vocals sparsely. The Frequent Flyer releases are unique because they're giving a geographic accent; in the case of Frequent Flyer: Barcelona, there's a shade of Catalan culture and music. This distinguishing characteristic is welcome and well evident on most of the selections. Roughly half of the 22 tracks were produced by David Ferrero, a capable producer, although his legion of monikers doesn't mask the fact that all of his work originated from the same studio and tends to sound similar. However, Barcelona's rich and flourishing music scene is highlighted by the one big-name featured artist here, Ojos de Brujo. ~ Jason Birchmeier

| | Another Level Untitled CD (1999) (Import) Japan
Afterdark-Capetown songs
$38.09 Another Level's self-titled debut album blends rap, pop and R&B into Top-40 friendly songs like the singles "Summertime" and "From the Heart," which was featured on the Notting Hill soundtrack. The group's sweet harmonies and romantic songs could easily make them as popular in the U.S. as they are in the U.K. ~ Heather Phares
For what many critics overseas considered to be a grouping of awesome R&B singing talent, Another Level falls short on many fronts. Sadly enough, most of the material presented here is derivative, badly produced, or just simply boring. Vocally, some of the tracks are thin and in need of stronger background production. That is not to say that there aren't promising moments here in the form of "Be Alone No More," "That Girl Belongs to Me," and "We'll Meet Again." These tracks are bright and well-sung without straining to be "street" in nature. It must also be noted that this debut American release is an assemblage of material from two U.K. album releases. For a better perspective on the artistic growth (for the better) of this act, it is recommended that the interested consumer check out Nexus, which is a much more cohesive offering and a better overall listening experience. ~ Jaime Ikeda
