Romantic 60'S: Original Artists album
$12.85 After the initial shock fades, the existence of CHRISTMAS IN THE HEART seems perhaps inevitable. After all, the thing Bob Dylan loves most of all are songs that are handed down from generation to generation, songs that are part of the American fabric, songs so common they never seem to have been written. ...

| | Kansas Point Of Know Return CD (1977) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Romantic 60'S: Original Artists album
$7.59 The high point of Kansas's long career, 1977's POINT OF KNOW RETURN found the American heartlanders finally striking the perfect balance between complex prog-rock, hard-hitting heavy guitar work, and crafty pop sensibilities. This is perhaps best exemplified by the title cut, a sparkling tune full of jaunty interaction between piano and violin that moves unerringly through some tricky musical maneuvers, while remaining engagingly catchy and accessible. The electrifying riffs that fly around in "Lightning's Hand" and "The Spider" show that the knack for tunes like the previous album's classic "Carry On Wayward Son" had not deserted Kansas. At the same time, thoughtful (but not saccharine) ballads such as "Dust in the Wind" and "Hopelessly Human" make it clear that there was more than flash to the band. Nevertheless, there's honestly impressive flash aplenty to be found here in Kansas's finest hour.
This is the definitive Kansas recording and includes their most famous tune, "Dust in the Wind." The band is in peak form and also churned out the single "Point of Know Return," which is still played daily on classic rock stations. While their pop-oriented approach and standard rock guitar sound helped define the classic rock sound of the '70s, careful listening reveals that this band's talent goes beyond colleagues such as Bachman-Turner Overdrive and Boston. Their arrangements and time signatures more accurately reflect the music of Yes and Emerson, Lake & Palmer. "Paradox" and "The Spider" are both excellent examples of their progressive approach. Unfortunately, the band always struggled to maintain a healthy balance of progression combined with pop. That made for such awkward moments here as "Portrait (He Knew)" and "Lightning's Hand." Yet ...
| | Marc Almond Willing Sinner: Live In Berlin CD (2003) (Import) United Kingdom
Romantic 60'S: Original Artists CD music
$14.79 Complementing the similarly titled video release featuring a 1991 concert in Berlin, The Willing Sinner finds Marc Almond at one of the most unusual -- and fascinating -- points of his career. On the verge of scoring a big solo hit in the U.K. with his cover of "The Days of Pearly Spencer," part of his extremely lush album from that year, Tenement Symphony, Almond himself increasingly favored performing stripped-down shows consisting of only himself and one regular musician, pianist Martin Watkins. While seemingly counterintuitive from the perspective of the business, this was just what the doctor ordered from an artistic point of view, letting Almond showcase not only the increasing depth and ability of his vocals and song choices ...

| | Foxy Shazam Introducing CD (2008)
Romantic 60'S: Original Artists album
$12.25 Introducing Foxy Shazam, which is actually the second album by this Cincinnati quintet (the first having apparently failed to "introduce" them as hoped), opens with striped-on crowd noises and a parody of Ed Sullivan's famous "he's a good boy" speech, which preceded Elvis Presley's national television debut and rock & roll's launch towards world domination. So to say that Foxy Shazam are suggesting that a similarly revolutionary event is nigh with the release of this album is certainly a tempting, but not entirely fair proposition -- no matter how carefully contrived their self-mythologizing imagery may be. Rather, Foxy Shazam are simply doing their very best to escape the dying clutches of the emo/screamo scene all around them, and -- within such more realistic parameters -- they actually put their money where their haircuts are and, well, succeed! As shown by euphoric highlights such as "The Rocketeer," the organ-fueled "The Science of Love," and the especially bombastic "Red Cape Diver," theirs is an audacious, courageous, and outrageous brand of Baroque hardcore pop music that sees all five members attacking each song's performance with stirring élan and conviction, effectively exposing Panic! At the Disco for the limp-wristed posers they are, while challenging the ...
