With Adam Lambert, American Idol finally got a finalist who was completely, utterly contemporary, aware of what's hip in music and culture and aware of how music is made and consumed in 2009, never seeming to try to follow fads or set trends, just embodying the time. Mercifully, he came in second to Kris Allen, for if he came in first he may have had to tame his self-styled glamazon ways. A second place finish allowed Lambert to come out of the closet and indulge in his penchant for theater on his debut, For Your Entertainment -- which isn't quite the same thing as camp, for if Adam Lambert is anything, he's earnest about his dress-up, never winking at the audience because he doesn't think there's much funny about his glitter and mascara: that's just what pop stars are supposed to do. He's learned that by listening to his stacks of Queen and Bowie records, from watching old MTV videos on YouTube, from living in a present that always competes with the ever-present past, so he takes it all at face value, mixing up arena rock guitars, new wave, disco, operatic overdubs with a constant electro pulse, glassy modern R&B, and the vague Euro strains of new millennium teen pop. Osibisa are not referred to often these days when historians look back at the evolution of world music. But they were quite prolific progenitors of the form in the 1970s, as this mid-'70s album marked their seventh LP in about five years. For listeners at the time who were unfamiliar with African popular music (and, to a large degree, for listeners of every era), Santana served as an inevitable comparison. With their fusion of African beats and funk-R&B-rock, Welcome Home could often sound like early-'70s Santana without the emphasis on psychedelic guitar, and without nearly as much blues and Latin influence as Santana had. (The Santana-like cover graphics couldn't have helped keep the comparisons at bay, either.) Yet there was quite a bit more in the way of distinctly African rhythms, often making the album sound like something of a link between Santana and the Afrobeat that would become popular in the 1980s. On occasion, the record ventured into slightly poppier territory with a languid cheer that verged on the sappy, though admittedly that approach did give them a U.K. hit with "Sunshine Day." Trapist's Ballroom begins in the space between, hesitating over the plucked acoustic notes that form a tightrope for Martin Brandlmayr's fits'n'starts percussion. The opener, "Time Axis Manipulation, Pt. 1," continues then, repeatedly folding warm guitar, bass, and drum improv into mildly unsettling synthesized drone for 12-plus minutes. After sketching the fragments of a blues riff, "Time Axis Manipulation"'s second portion puts a blurping programming rig in the room and adds a whining synthesizer.
