Whether by coincidence or by design, German producers Roman Flugel and Jorn Elling Wuttke entertain many alter egos. They record, for various labels, as Sensorama, Acid Jesus, Primitive Painter, and Eight Miles High. Alter Ego is a particularly important project for Flugel and Wuttke, as the music released under this name has allowed them to break free of the tyrannical trance-techno scene that holds court in Germany. Like the duo's English contemporaries (B12, As One, Reload, The Black Dog, etc), the warm and bubbly sound of 1996's DECODING is a reverent response to the crystalline electronic soul of Detroit techno. Nothing could be more unfashionable back in Frankfurt.
Flugel was once a jazz drummer and pianist, and his gift for syncopation marks the buoyant, rippling "Mescal" and the accented swing of "Cyax Pt. 2." DECODING is constructed with a subtle inclination towards the unexpected--be it a single stuttered beat, a tart rhythmic twist, or a gloriously tangled melody--that rewards concentrated listening. That is, if you're able to sit still. It's not easy. The intricate grooves of a "Slacker" or "Microshopping" shoot for the hips as well as the head.

| | 50 Cent Before I Self-Destruct CDs (2007) With DVD
Decoding The Hacker Myth music CDs
$11.19 Released without the usual flurry of hype, Before I Self Destruct fulfills 50 Cent's contractual obligation to the Interscope label. It also doubles as a throwback album, returning the rapper to the hunger and hatred of his early mixtapes while skillfully recasting him as a wannabe upstart. That is, for the most part. The four radio-friendly bedroom numbers that conclude the album are out of place but fairly good to dime-piece beautiful, with the best being the Ne-Yo showcase "Baby by Me" ("Have a baby by me, baby/Be a millionaire"). As pleasing as these final numbers are, if you leave the room after the macho bruiser "I Got Swag" ("I'm infinitely special/Girl the Lord is gonna bless you/If you do what I tell you to do"), you'll return to a confusingly different album, one that's as glamorous but less vital. The monstrous run of tracks that ...

| | Pat Boone Fifties - Complete CDs (1997) (Import) Import; Boxed Set; Germany
Decoding The Hacker Myth music CDs
$310.69 This massive box set covers virtually all of the 1950s recordings from classic crooner Pat Boone. The 346-song collection includes mono versions of his hits that were previously unreleased on CD, the stereo remakes of his hits, an unissued album, other rare tracks, and an LP-sized book that has a detailed retrospective featuring a biography, discography, and photos from Boone's personal collection.
This 12-CD box set containing 347 songs -- Pat Boone's entire 1950s recorded output, including over 80 previously unissued tracks -- deserves an honest, open-minded, and thorough examination. Listeners may like or dislike Pat Boone's early R&B hits -- "Two Hearts," "Ain't That a Shame," "Tutti Frutti," etc. -- but it is important to remember that those songs comprise but a very small part of his 1950s recorded output and demonstrate one side only of his amazing versatility. Certainly on any voluminous, comprehensive collection, not all the tracks are going to be gems, and this anthology contains a few that don't shine so brightly. However, the vast majority of material here has so very much to recommend it. "Exquisite" and "impeccable" are adjectives that do not exaggerate Boone's unaffected, natural, and totally wholehearted way with a song. Whether it's "Stardust," "Begin the Beguine," "Cheek to Cheek," "Yes Indeed," "St. Louis Blues," "More Than You Know" -- these and countless others are all done to perfection. The accolades that came Pat Boone's way during the '50s included critical acclaim and raves from Sinatra, Crosby, Como, and many other contemporaries and critics alike. In an August 1957 interview with Red Robinson in Vancouver, BC, Elvis Presley said of Pat Boone, "the ...

| | Laura Theodore What The World Needs Now Is Love CD (2003)
Decoding The Hacker Myth music CDs
$13.15 Laura Theodore has one of the most striking voices in jazz -- a clear mezzo that drops unexpectedly into a rich and throaty tenor and soars upward again at the drop of a beat. Her theatrical training is fully in evidence on her fifth album as a leader, What the World Needs Now Is Love; she takes such hoary material as "I'm in the Mood for Love" and "Come Rain or Come Shine" and makes it sound like something new and surprising. Her rendition of "Fever," on the other hand, brings no new insights to the song, but she manages to deepen and broaden its emotional depth by the sheer power of her voice. The album's highlight is a strangely lighthearted arrangement of "Don't Get Around Much Anymore." More skillful production would have made this album an unalloyed pleasure; as it is, unfortunately, the sound tends to be compressed, claustrophobic, and brassy, especially on the songs with orchestral accompaniment. Theodore's voice is shown off to best advantage in those moments when it isn't fighting the orchestra for space; the voice-and-bass duo arrangement of "How Deep Is the Ocean," for example. Lovers of vocal jazz will enjoy this album, but those with a more casual interest may find themselves distracted by its marginal sonic qualities. ~ Rick Anderson
Laura Theodore is a compelling singer who employs and enjoys a wide vocal, emotional and stylistic range. Audiences and the best of musicians alike routinely marvel at Laura's musicality, flexibility of voice, rhythmic perfection, and the singer's astonishing breadth of repertoire. On this CD, Laura celebrates her love for the classic popular standard song with a few suprises along the way! "What the World Needs Now is Love" features the Juliene Purefoy Big Band and contains immortal standards, ranging from the Golden Age of Gershwin and Rodgers, and ...
