Onaje Allan Gumbs has plenty of surprises in store for jazz fans in Sack Full of Dreams. Joined by bassist Marcus McLaurine (who has worked extensively with Clark Terry) and drummer George Gray, plus a few guests, Gumbs puts new twists on both familiar jazz pieces and songs not normally associated with jazz, as well as his own superb originals. His deliciously funky take of Herbie Hancock's "Cantaloupe Island" adds guitarist Bob DeVos and percussionist Gary Fritz, while his easygoing interpretation of the late Gary McFarland's ballad "Sack Full of Dreams" features the warm vocals of Obba Babatunde. Gumbs' breezy arrangement of "The Fishin' Pond" turns a once easygoing ballad with whistling into a hard bop cooker, though it should be familiar to those who watched The Andy Griffith Show. "Try to Remember" was the prominent recurring theme in the long-running Broadway musical The Fantasticks, though Gumbs plays a beautiful improvisation of it with the reverence of an offertory solo in church; not surprisingly, this track is dedicated to his late mother. Gumbs' compositions include the spirited blues "'Nitelife" and the reflective ballad "Lament," both featuring tenor saxophonist Mark Shim, though his roots funk jam "Stank You Very Much" quickly gets tedious. Finally, McLaurine contributed the infectious samba "Destiny." This CD should be considered one of Onaje Allan Gumbs' most essential recordings. ~ Ken Dryden

Pianist George Cables, who spent some of his formative years accompanying saxophone great Dexter Gordon, pays tribute to the man with a nicely varied collection of tunes written by or associated with Gordon, A Letter to Dexter. His trio is filled out by fellow Gordon alumni Rufus Reid on bass and drummer Victor Lewis, both of them now giants in their own right. Cables has a decorous and romantic playing style, and combined with a rhythm section as mighty as this one, the results should be magnificent. And so they are, at least most of the time. Unfortunately, there are occasional moments when the rhythmic thread is lost and the groove falters. This usually happens during piano solos: listen carefully, for example, to the way the bass and drums wander off-groove during Cables' first chorus on "Fried Bananas." But most of the album is a delight. The trio's take on the Gordon composition "Cheesecake" is powerful and relentlessly swinging; "I Told You So," a Cables original, has a wonderfully lilting Caribbean flavor, and Cables' solo rendition of "'Round About Midnight" is another treat, an unusual and highly intelligent interpretation characterized by staccato phrasing and ...

This is hardly tenor saxophonist Grant Stewart's first recording as a leader, but his earlier CDs were for various European labels. In the Still of the Night is the release that set his career afire, as he joins forces with three of New York's in-demand musicians in his rhythm section: the hard-driving pianist Tardo Hammer, everyone's first call bassist Peter Washington and the talented drummer Joe Farnsworth. Right of the box, the big-toned Stewart makes his presence known with an up-tempo rendition of "In the Still of the Night" that makes one stand up and take notice. Stewart and Hammer dive head first into Thelonious Monk's "Work" (not exactly one of the pianist's more frequently recorded numbers), with Washington and Farnsworth fueling their spirited solos.
