Personnel: Scott Whitfield (vocals, trombone); Scott Whitfield; Pete McGuinness, Kevin Osborne (vocals, trombone); Cheryl Bentyne (vocals); Ted Kooshian (piano); Willard Dyson (drums); Memo Acevedo (percussion); Bucky Pizzarelli (guitar); Marvin Stamm (trumpet, flugelhorn); Terry Clarke (drums). Liner Note Author: Helen Borgers. Recording information: Entourage Studios, North Hollywood, CA (2005); Nola Studios, New York, NY (2005). Author: Helen Borgers. Arranger: Scott Whitfield. Trombonist/composer/arranger and bandleader Scott Whitfield has sung on a few of his earlier albums, but on this occasion he dives in head first, concentrating as much on vocals as his trombone playing. This session, which concentrates on songs popular in the 1930s and 1940s, has a strong cast of instrumentalists, including guests Bucky Pizzarelli, Marvin Stamm, Scott Robinson (heard on the rarely featured bass sax), plus Whitfield, his rhythm section and the Manhattan Vocal Project (the leader plus three instrumentalists, all of whom double on Four Freshmen-like harmony vocals). But Whitfield just isn't a strong enough vocalist to devote an entire CD to singing, which makes it difficult to hear this release all the way through in one sitting. His originals on this date are also less memorable than those heard on his earlier Summit recordings, though his arrangements of familiar standards are enjoyable. The vocal highlights feature Cheryl Bentyne, especially her adept handling of Bill Evans' "Adagio in Pearl" (a vocal treatment of "Bill's Hit Tune"), though she is hampered a bit by Whitfield trying to keep up with her vocally. This isn't a bad release, but as many singing jazz instrumentalists have realized over the years, unless you are an outstanding vocalist, it is best to take only occasional turns at the mic. ~ Ken DrydenJazzTimes (p.134) - "[T]his well-produced CD is a delightful departure that is an obvious labor of love....Whitfield gets in his share of outstanding trombone solos." Speaking Of Love
$9.79 Full title - Rollerworld - Live at The Budokan, Tokyo 1977. Once a Japanese exclusive, this album recorded over two shows is now available from the UK at a great price. 16 tracks. Acrobat Gold. 2003.
Bay City Rollers: Les McKeown (vocals, guitar); Stuart "Woody" Wood (guitar, bass, background vocals); Eric Faulkner (guitar, background vocals); Derek Longmuir (drums). Recorded at The Budokan, Tokyo, Japan in 1977. Includes liner notes by Mark St. John. All tracks have been digitally remastered. In Britain, Bay City Rollers reigned supreme for something less than two years, and in America, they were tops for a little more than one. Only in Japan did their fame sustain for anything more than a couple of blinks of an eye and, by 1977 -- just three years after "Shang a Lang" topped charts around the world -- that land remained the Rollers' last stronghold. But what a stronghold it was, repository of some of the wildest hysteria in the entire Rollerworld. Hence the title of this collection; hence the unrelenting undulation of screaming and joy that forms a backdrop to the main attraction. Rollerworld ...
