Live BBC Session by this sadly overlooked and defunct UK Alternative/Pop band, recorded and released to celebrate the life of Radio DJ John Peel who was a huge fan of the band. Re-formed for this show. Hefner actually previously recorded five Peel sessions and four live concerts for his radio show. This recording also features special guests including members of Talulah Gosh and The Wedding Present. The album captures an exceptional performance of many rarely played songs live during the bands short career. 10 tracks. Belka.
Die-hard radio geeks already know this just from the title: Hefner's Maida Vale is a career-spanning compilation of the defunct band's BBC radio sessions. (Maida Vale, y'see, is the leafy northwest London suburb where BBC Radio 1's main studios are housed. However, '70s proggers This Heat still keep the prize for best titular use of this location, on their own set of BBC sessions, Made Available.) Unlike many bands who simply go through a halfhearted selection of their best-known songs for their radio sessions, Hefner tend to shy away from their best-known material here: "The Greedy Ugly People" (featuring Amelia Fletcher on harmony vocals) is the only single side in these ten songs, with most of the rest being fairly obscure album tracks like the yearning "The Greater London Radio" and "Don't Flake Out on Me." The album highlight is a sardonically spirited take on "The Day That Thatcher Dies," with a punchy faux-R&B horn section that sounds like it was lifted straight off a Style Council single. Although Maida Vale is, like all collections of BBC sessions, essentially a nice curio for fans rather than an essential release, it's a nice complement to 2006's other retrospective Hefner releases. ~ Stewart Mason
Uncut (p.98) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "This eight-song set, recorded live at Maida Vale in August 2000...suggests their memory should be cherished." Maida Vale Review

| | Psychedelic States: Alabama In The '60S CD (2002)
Maida Vale songs
$11.29 By this fifth installment, it had already become quite clear the logic that reissue label Gear Fab used to put together the CDs in its Psychedelic States series. The modus operandi entails recovering as many obscurities and unknowns as possible from the maw of the '60s on a regional basis and presenting them, for better or worse, to the public no frills. If rather more than fewer of the songs tend to lean toward the "for worse" side of the spectrum, so be it. Even the stinkers tend to be loveable in their hormonal, beetle-booted, eczematous mediocrity, instant time capsules to transport the listener to a halcyon rock era when virtually every suburban garage and Elks club came stocked with its own Beatles or Rolling Stones manqué no matter how remote or unlikely the region in which they were situated. In the case of this entry in the series, those garages were located ...

| | God Save The Smithereens CD (1999)
Maida Vale CD music
$12.79 After two decades, the Smithereens were no longer in step with the times and they no longer cared -- they do what they do because they love it, not because it's fashionable. They were at that point with 1994's A Date With the Smithereens, but that record was hurt by a weird undercurrent of bitterness and Pat DiNizio's songwriting slump. Wisely, the group decided to take a break after that album. The extended five-year hiatus recharged the group, if God Save is any indication. Not that the record is a masterpiece, but it is a good journeyman record that plays up their strengths quite nicely. There's a little bit of everything that the Smithereens do on the record -- jangly pop ("She's Got a ...
| | Barbara Carr Down Low Brother CD (2006)
Maida Vale music CDs
$13.79 Barbara Carr has seen a career resurgence the past few years by delivering a series of midtempo albums specializing in a kind of retro-soul heavy on the steamy, sordid side of things. To her credit, the songs she sings about relationships going down the tubes seldom have her playing the role of the victim, and she projects a strong "don't mess with me" stance in most of them. She also gets pretty bawdy and explicit when it comes to the sexual details of these various crumbling scenarios, making her the contemporary queen of blue urban soul, and she's well aware that a little controversy is a good marketing tool. In the case of Down Low Brother, it is the title tune that will undoubtedly stir things up, as she holds forth on the dilemma of finding her man in bed with another ...

| | Innocence Is Bliss (A Female Frenzy Of Sensational Sounds) CD (2006)
Maida Vale album
$9.69 Punk is, for the most part, a male-oriented genre. There are some notable exceptions, of course (Patti Smith, riot grrrl acts like Sleater-Kinney and Bikini Kill), and in the new millennium, more and more female-led bands have managed to break through. Innocence Is Bliss (A Female Frenzy of Sensational Sounds), however, compiled and released by Dionysus Records, is a collection of some of the yet-to-be-well-known bands. In fact, many of the acts -- all of which are fronted by female vocalists, and some of which are all female -- are rather obscure (though dedicated punk fans may be familiar with Anna & the Psychomen or the Young Werewolves). This anonymity however, will probably not be solved by an inclusion on the album, mainly because only a limited number of the compilations were pressed (under 1000 CDs and under 500 LPs), giving relatively few people an opportunity to hear the groups, but also because while all of the bands on Innocence Is Bliss are completely adequate, nothing they do really stands out, besides the fact they're partially female, which isn't enough. Shouted and generally incomprehensible ...
| | Ike Reilly Poison The Hit Parade CDs (2008) With DVD
Maida Vale CD music
$8.21 A collection of songs taken from demos from his debut 'Salesmen And Racists', and alternate versions of songs from 'Sparkle In The Finish' and 'We Belong To The Staggering Evening', as well as a previously unreleased title track, and the poignant cancer anthem, 'Dragonflies'. This release continues Reilly's prolific assault with images of characters in a conflicted middle America: patriotic doubt, the celebration of life and death, high school girls in summer dresses, and more theoretical assassination attempts.
Ike Reilly's new album isn't really new at all, ...
