| | Pretty Ricky Late Night Special CD Pretty Ricky Discography of CDs
LATE NIGHT SPECIAL is the sophomore release from Miami R&B/hip-hop quartet Pretty Ricky. Comprising four brothers, and distinguished by no-holds-barred lyrics and raunchy subject matter, Pretty Ricky deliver more of the slinky, dirty grooves that dominated their debut, BLUESTARS. The smooth vibe of "On the Hotline," an ode to phone sex, is a case in point, but there are plenty of more uptempo grinds as well, providing a full complement of wild, hormonally charged urban R&B.

| | Trina Da Baddest BH CD (2000)
Late Night Special
$9.19 Rapper Trina hopes to pick up where Lil' Kim, Da Brat, and a host of other potty-mouthed hardcore gals left off, rhyming about sex and her ability to go at it all night and her quest to find a man willing to do the same for her. By the end of her debut album, it all gets a bit monotonous. Only so many sleazy sex rhymes are tolerable before they become weary. Da Baddest Bitch is at its best when Trina steps out of the gutter and cops a Miami bass beat aimed more toward the dancefloor than the bedroom. The title track and "Off Glass," as well as guest performances from Trick Daddy, Twista, and J-Shin, keep the momentum relatively steady. ~ Michael Gallucci

| | Usher 8701 CD (2001)
Late Night Special
$9.99 "U Remind Me" won the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance.
"U Don't Have To Call" won the 2003 Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance.
R&B mack daddy Usher puts a lot of himself into 8701; that's apparent even from the title itself, which represents the year Usher began exploring the world of music ('87) and the place where music brought him by the time of this recording ('01). He starts thing out in grand style with the romantic "U Remind Me." "I Don't Know" takes a hip-hop turn with a contribution from P. Diddy (that's Puff Daddy for those of you arriving late), but Usher is quick to point out that he's strictly about partying and loving, not about thug life. While there are some amped-up, percolating tunes that make good use of Usher's high energy ("I Can't Let U Go"), he really hits his stride when he falls into the familiar position of heartthrob/crooner. His sensual cooing, breathy tone, and smooth-as-silk delivery on the likes of "Can U Help Me" (Usher seems to have graduated from the Prince school of song titles) and "How Do I Say" play to this charmer's strengths and are sure to keep the sizable female quotient of his audience sufficiently entranced.

| | Usher Confessions: Special Edition CD (2004) Special Edition
Late Night Special
$9.75 Usher has been a symbol of tender sexuality ever since he shifted from teenage sensation to soulful superstar. He's breathtakingly good at what he does; possessing that undefinable essence known to a select few soul crooners (Al Green, D'Angelo, etc.) who radiate sensuality through song, Usher has reached an apex on the sultry CONFESSIONS, his fifth studio album.
After the obligatory intro, Lil Jon kicks in with his exhortations on the catchy, dance-floor-ready single "Yeah." Usher follows that up with the sublimely sweet "Throwback," a torch song with a fantastic Motown hook. On "Confessions Part II," he exposes his most vulnerable side when admitting to his lover that he's fathered a child with another woman. Exemplifying his versatility, Usher follows the standard pop ballad "Simple Things" with the guitar-riff-driven "Bad Girl," somewhere between 1970s funk and '80s Prince. CONFESSIONS is the sound of an R&B luminary at t

| | Ne-Yo Year Of The Gentleman CD (2008)
Late Night Special
$10.75 The R&B singer, songwriter, producer, and all-around hit-making machine known as Ne-Yo works his magic yet again on YEAR OF THE GENTLEMAN. Different from your average R&B crooner of the day, Ne-Yo backs away from overt sexuality, instead aiming for subtle romantic ballads that vary from playful innocence to brooding melancholy. Lead single "Closer" is unique as Ne-Yo works his silky smooth voice over a poppy house track. Overall, YEAR OF THE GENTLEMAN is consistent in this respectfully seductive approach to the fairer sex. In "Nobody," an awed Ne-Yo sings the praises of his love interest--"Can't nobody strut like her/Can't nobody touch her"--and the second single, "Miss Independent" is as close to a feminist anthem as the R&B genre has come in years. Production work comes from Polow da Don, Stargate, Chuck Harmony, Stereotypes, and Ne-Yo himself.

| | Onry Ozzborn In Between CD (2005)
Late Night Special
$16.45 Onry Ozzborn (Reason of Grayskul) is an enduring veteran talent who is garnering a lot of attention in the notoriously saturated Hip Hop market. One of the premiere emcees among the sizable roster of Northwest powerhouse Oldominion, Onry Ozzborn comes across as effortlessly versatile and always intriguing. Crafting beats that possess a taut, urgent desperation, this journeyman craftsman has forged a signature sound that is powerful, confident and entirely his own.Known for his darkened spiritual journeys and clever tales, Onry’s new album, In Between, shows a side of Onry that few knew existed. His usual hard edge is cracked by a sense of humor on this release, and features collaborations with rap-heavyweights Aceyalone, Busdriver and Ill Bill of Non-Phixion as well as fellow Oldominion crew vets Sleep and Siren’s ...
