Ellis fans will definitely want this set, as so little of her material remains in print. ~ Al Campbell

Appassionato
$16.49 Not one to be typecast by a decidedly mainstream background that included stints with Wynton Marsalis & the Lincoln Center Jazz Orch., Wycliffe shows more sides to a versatility first hinted at by the the sounds of his album "The Gospel Truth". This new
A glance at the play list on this CD tells the listener where trombonistWycliffe Gordon is coming from. While many jazz performers are into music that sounds like it might be more fun for the musicians to play than the audience to hear, Gordon looks to some of his musical forefathers for inspiration of a more melodious kind. Tunes from such masters as Duke Ellington and John Coltrane signal an elegant and sophisticated approach, exemplified by the opening cut, "In a Mellow Tone." Not that Gordon and his companions do not go off on jazz riffs, but they are mindful of the return to the melody, for which many a jazz fan can be thankful. Gordon plays here with an outstanding lineup of musicians, including Ryan Kisor on trumpet, Victor Goines on tenor and soprano saxophone, Herb Harris on tenor sax, Zach Pride on bass, and Rodney Green on drums. Gordon puts the group through its paces on beautiful standards such as "Mood Indigo," "Cherokee," and "Stevie." The aggregation hits a groove on "Blue 'n' Boogie" and "Cotton Tail," and steams through several tunes from Gordon's pen, including the title cut, "Pretty Little Girl," and "Bone Abstractions." Wycliffe Gordon lets the world know that "what you dealin' with" here is excellence in musicianship. ~ Rose of Sharon Witmer

| | Bobby Hackett Comp. Live At Voyager Room 1956-58 CD (2008) (Import)
Appassionato
$22.05 2006 two CD set featuring rare radio broadcasts from The Voyager Room at New York's Henry Hudson Hotel, presented here for the first time ever, and with wonderful sound quality! The group's a sextet led by Bobby Hackett on cornet and Bob Wilber on clarinet, alto, tenor, soprano sax, and a bit of vibes, working in a trad Jazz mode, but often with some wonderfully blue tones that really help break the work away from any expected clich‚s! The other instrumentation includes piano, bass, drums, and baritone sax, all used in relatively inventive combinations that often show traces of contemporaneous chamber Jazz modes, despite the more traditional presentation of the material. And despite the fact that the tunes are from radio broadcasts, they're almost as tight and well recorded as studio work, presented here in a whopping 33 tracks that include "Allahandra", "Whisper Not", "Morning Air", "The Seal", "Zig Zag", "Stardust", "Muskrat Ramble", "Poor Butterfly", "Swing 39", "Handy With Cary", "Cornet Chop Suey", "Swiss Criss", "Spinning", "Sugar", and "Cottontail". Lonehill Jazz.
