By the mid-2000s, Sonny Rollins had established himself as one of jazz's official elder statesmen, touting a colossal, decades-spanning discography that boasted some of the best boundary-pushing bop and post bop in the jazz canon. With 2006's SONNY, PLEASE, the artist shows no signs of slowing. Flanked by excellent personnel--including a trombonist, percussionist, and guitarist--Rollins runs through a mix of originals and standards with a spirited focus that recalls the saxophonist's heyday. While Rollins has sounded more experimental, he is far from staid here, soloing with the bold intensity his legions of long-time fans expect.

Down Beat (p.57) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "He sounds terrific: big, burly, knotted and beautiful, nicely recorded here to boot." JazzTimes (p.97) - "The edgier tone throws his expressive devices into stark relief. Every nuance is felt." Mojo (Publisher) (p.102) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "His playing possesses a virile muscularity on the modal track, while on the standard 'Someday I'll Find You', he creates a beguiling aura of wistful elegance. Masterful." Sonny Rollins Sonny, Please Songs Sonny, Please Review

Purchase Sonny, Please CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Dizzy Gillespie Town Hall, New York City, June 22, 1945 CD (2005)
Sonny, Please album
$13.79 The historic live Town Hall sessions by Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker from 1945 have been discovered on an acetate pressing, and are transferred with digital enhancement to CD. Why this concert was not issued initially is understandable, but Ira Gitler's informative and insightful liner notes suggest they likely were misplaced. What Gitler's essential writing also reveals is that these dates were approximate by only weeks to the original studio recordings of these classics, and there was no small amount of controversy surrounding this revolutionary bebop. Clearly bop was a vehicle for intricate melodic invention followed by lengthy soloing, aspects of which Parker with Gillespie were perfectly suited for. Fact is, the situation surrounding the sonic capture and extended neglected shelf life of this performance was far from optimal. Symphony Sid Torin is the M.C., rambling as always, making repeated references to Dizzy "Jillespie" and misidentifying ...

| | Dave Holland Critical Mass CD (2006)
Sonny, Please album
$14.19 One word that comes to mind when listening to Critical Mass is generosity. Double-bassist Dave Holland, four decades into his career, could certainly be forgiven for taking the word "leader" at its literal meaning, calling all the shots and keeping his musicians at bay. But that's not what he's about, and at any given time Critical Mass could just as easily have been credited to saxist Chris Potter, trombonist Robin Eubanks, vibist/marimbaist Steve Nelson, or drummer Nate Smith. Each player is provided with ample moments in which to take charge, and not fleeting, gratuitous moments but rather significant chunks of solo/lead space. Holland's belief in sharing extends to the area of composition as well. Each bandmember contributes one piece to the album (Holland does claim the other four, however) and, more often than not, uses that opportunity to shapeshift, to push the band -- ...

| | Yellowjackets Peace Round: A Christmas Celebration CD (2003)
Sonny, Please album
$10.15 This progressive jazz supergroup had previously contributed tracks to three high-profile holiday jazz recordings (including a GRP collection and Take 6's He Is Christmas), but never took the full plunge into the stocking stuffer realm until now. There's definitely a sense of spunk and spontaneity as the quartet does its first and second takes, but most of the arrangements are pretty standard jazz hipster stuff, allowing for saxman Bob Mintzer, pianist Russ ...
