On SACRED JOURNEY OF KU-KAI VOL. 2, Kitaro sets out to complete his musical survey of Shikoku. A secluded Japanese island, Shikoku is the home to 88 ancient temples. (The iconoclastic Buddhist priest Ku-Kai was the first to make the sacred pilgrimage across this island.)
As on the first volume, Kitaro brings to life the ancient beauty and mystical power of this land. In order to do this, the New Age composer traveled to many Shikoku temples, among them Ryouzenji, Konsenji, and Gokurakuji. His goal was to internalize the natural beauty of these surroundings and to capture the sound of each temple bell. Not surprisingly, these bells are heard throughout the album. Their soft tolling especially complements Kitaro's keyboards on the futuristic "Kan-Non" and on the foreboding "Ritual Waves." Kitaro also uses traditional Asian instruments on all 11 tracks. Among others, the opening track, "Shining Spirit of Water," features a spacious and haunting koto (Japanese zither) melody. Additionally, various flutes and pipes are heard soaring high above on many of these selections. The best example of this may be on the sweeping ballad "As the Wind Blows."
For over a quarter century, Japan's Kitaro has been an internationally recognized icon and globally acclaimed composer and musician. Influenced early on by American rock and R&B, Kitaro began experimenting with synthesizers and a rainbow of unconventional sounds in the mid-'70s. Whatever Happened to Romance? is the debut album from "singing waitress" (as she has become known) Victoria Hart. Having garnered her nickname from a lucky turn of events that found her getting plucked from obscurity to perform for actor George Clooney at a party in France, in truth, Hart has had the good fortune to be discovered twice in her life. First, at age 15 while living with her parents in France, she was heard singing at a party at a vineyard by producer Geoff Gurd, who was so impressed he took her under his wing and began recording her -- a creative partnership featured on this album. Second, in 2007 while working as a singing waitress at a restaurant in London, the 18-year-old Hart was invited to perform for a benefit party during the Cannes Film Festival hosted by Clooney and other stars, including Brad Pitt. The story was a press sensation and not soon after Hart had signed a purportedly one-million-dollar contract with Decca Records.
