| | Yasmin Levy Mano Suave CD (2007)
Ohayo Sunday CD music
$13.89 Yasmin Levy has proved herself to be the leading exponent of Ladino song (Ladino is the language of the Sephardic Jews whose roots are in Spain). However, her previous albums have never quite captured her potential. This time, though, she's hit the spot, finding both the intensity of performance and delicacy of arrangement that's been her hallmark. The style is a mix of influences that blend perfectly -- listen carefully and you can hear traces of flamenco nestled alongside Middle Eastern music, with influences from around the Mediterranean liberally scattered across the sound. Her voice is in glorious form, with a depth of purity that illustrates just how she's matured and fully grown into her ability. Her own band, now well bedded-in, is superb and ...
| | Laura Pausini Io Canto CD (2006)
Ohayo Sunday music CDs
$7.55 Laura Pausini, a multilingual Italian pop singer who won a Latin Grammy in 2005 for Best Female Pop Vocal Album, decided to record an album of cover songs when she returned to the studio to record her follow-up effort. This is a fairly standard practice for pop/rock artists, of course, especially in the wake of a mammoth success like the one Pausini experienced with Resta in Ascolto (released concurrently in Spanish as Escucha in the Americas). Yo Canto (likewise released concurrently in Spanish) is a somewhat unusual covers album, however, for it's comprised of Italian pop/rock songs from the 1970s, '80s, and '90s -- few, if any, of which will be familiar to listeners across the Atlantic. Pausini performs the songs in a manner similar to that of Resta in Ascolto: the songs are heavily produced, layered with guitar, bass, and drums in addition to strings and synthesizers, and the performances are quite dramatic, often soaring to intense heights during the choruses, complemented by lyrics that are moody and poetic. | | Best Of Eddie Money CD (2001)
Ohayo Sunday songs
$7.29 Digitally remastered by Joseph M. Palmaccio (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York).
Columbia/Legacy's 2001 release The Best of Eddie Money supplants the earlier 1989 collection Greatest Hits: The Sound of Money as the best overview of Money's career. Again, it's not sequenced chronologically, nor is it as tight as it should have been (Money is somebody who would really sound terrific on an eight- or ten-song collection), but it's very good all the same, containing all of his big hits, plus live versions of "Rock and Roll the Place" ...

| | Fats Waller & His Rhythm, Vol. 1: 1934-1936 CD (2005)
Ohayo Sunday CD music
$9.29 Fats Waller recorded hundreds and hundreds of songs between 1922 and 1943. Since the introduction of compact disc technology during the 1980s there has arisen a veritable forest of Waller compilations through which some may find it difficult to navigate. Not everyone seeks to collect and collate his complete works. If you're looking for an excellent and very digestible sampler it might be wise to obtain Fats Waller & His Rhythm, Vol. 1: 1934-1936, a single-disc, 22-track collection released in 2005 on EPM Musique's Jazz Archives series that captures the essence of this little band's lively and heartwarming approach to swing music. Waller swiftly gained popularity by tampering with Tin Pan Alley love songs while composing attractive melodies and infectious jam tunes that have never lost their potency and never, ever will. Whoever selected the titles on this collection did an unusually good job of it. "You're Not the Only Oyster in the Stew," "I Ain't Got Nobody," and "Dream Man" are three of the very best recordings this group ever made. Fortunately, the producers chose to tap into the ecstatic rowdiness of the "Twelfth Street Rag," "It's a Sin to Tell a Lie," "Swingin' Them Jingle Bells," and "I Got Rhythm," the one track that finds Waller's usual sextet surrounded with extra players to form a big band. Best of all perhaps are "Paswonky" and "Black Raspberry Jam," a pair of front burner instrumentals garnished with Waller's clever commentary. There are ...
